and ecosyslern services dug to the Coronavirus pandemic Ihal struck the world, esperAally Rwanda from 141h ol
M8r¢h 2020. Total lockdown was one ol th6 m8asur85 to control thg ovgr5preading of the pandemic and h85
negatively 8ffe¢led the plan of ARCOS to inform decision making on the rational and 5UStalnable us8 of wetland
blodiversily an¢J ecosystem s8rvices. D8spile this challenge, ARCOS opted lo prioritsze office-based work and
use the tèchnology of remote working and online meetings lo ¢ontJnue the assessmgnl ol w811and ecologlcal
Integrlty slalus in Rwanda. Rwanda Wetland Cover Change mapping 12008-20181 work was completèd. The
technical report Is placg and a r81ated research poster was pfi)duced and be acce558d via the ARCOS
website 1www.ar¢osnefv￿rk.org1. Overall, wilhin 10 years12008-20181 Weuands used for agriculture r8duc&d by
2.63%,. the natural vegetation reduced by 6.62%,. Ihe waler body class increased by 3.82°/o leven il some parts
of the country, wetlands lost a considerable cover of water body at the exp¢n$e of other class&s like bare soil,
settlement. Invasive spgcles mainly waier hyaclnth) 8nd rnining Iquarry awas increased al 5.42%.

different indiwduals including decision makers in weU8nd management in Rwanda and shared tho finding of the

By the end ol the year, we managed lo conduct an integrated landscape assessmgnl and monitoring •x9rclse Sn

community around the wetrands and ec05y51em services. We assessed Ihè pressure exert8d on biodlverslly and

Building climate change resili8n¢e is one programmg from ARCOS Ihat alms lo support national and reglonal
mechanisms lor assessing 8nd understanding the irnpa¢ls of climate change and promote grassroots actions lo
build community and ecosyslem resilience. The year 2020 was marked by mobilizing 8ffortS to build the c8p8¢IIy
of youth in schools and inlegrate dimale change resilience inlerventions In their day-to4lay activities. With
rinancial support from Ihe Dani¥h Outdoor Councll. about 200 participants from 4 schools located in Bugesera
and Rulsiro Dlslricts in Rwanda Iwith aboul 80V• being sludentsl ben&filed from a training of trainers where thoy
covered different topics including the introduclion to climate ¢hange', assessing the school and community
vulnorability to cllmate ¢hange'. and devekjping schools and community adaplalion practices.

In same framewo￿. an¢J with financial support of the Livellhood Funds, ARCOS recruited 30 new
indlviduals in the capacity of Community Extension Officers and Tree Nursery Managers respectively, to be
based in the fl¢ld and provide extonsion services related to climate change 8daptats.on including farmers
trainings. pr¢duction. and management of trees of various spetyes as well 85 monitoring and evaluation. By the
end of the year 2020, 5,921 farmers were frained and gathered into 202 Friends of Nature Associations through
which all climate resilient interventions will be channelled, and 606,000 treos of different species wore planted on
2,479.3 ha. Import3nUy, plantèd trees included more indigenous trees than ever. such as lik8 Ficus SP
Mitragyna ruburostipulac&a. Erytrina sp and Markh8mia lut8a to incfèasg diverslty and restorg farmland
ecosystems. The monitoring mechanisms arè in place to ensure thg growth and malurily of planted traes so that
they can contribute lo C02 sequestration, sustaln soil organic matter productlon. and contribute to 8011 Pfolgcllon
and erosion Control.
3.3 Promotlng Sustalnable Agrlcullur• and Improv￿ Food Securlty
A6 part of ils Nature-8as8d Communily Development Program, ARCOS promot8s grassrogl solutions lo
enhance healthy, environmentalty friendty, economically viable and socially responsible food syslerns.
In 2020. over 6.000 farmers were Irainfjd in Sustsin8bltr Agricultural Land Managemenl (SALMI includSng tree
planting, $051 erosion control, integrated nulrienls, wsls and diseases manag8menl and susl8inable agronomlc
practices 8mong othors. In addition, over 480.000 agroforestry trees wgie planted across approximately 2.400
ha In Rullndo and Buges8ra.
Furthermore, 8 ¢ommunlty livelihood d¥v8lopment strategy was developed as ¥ tool to guid¢ current and ftjlure

livelihood in the Rulindo and Bugesera distric15 01 Rwanda. Over 6,000 farmers from 201 ngw NBCE8 were
trained in Sustain8ble Agricultural Land Management (SALMI including tree planting, soil erosion control,
integrated nutrients, pest and dise83e managemenl and sustainable agronomic practi¢es among others.
Fvrthermore, a community livelihood development strategy was develo￿ as a tool to guide current and futur8
Sntervenllons in building resS1ience lo dimate change In Rw8ndan agro-syslems.
Addllonally, 201 new lamigr-based Saving and Credit Associations. also namgd VSLAS were inllSaled through
tho newly esiablished NBCES lo drivè financial suslainabilty at grassrool level. Awareness and outreach
inbtiatives wer• implemented through larmer-to-farmer and media campaigns and events held lo communicate
community achievernents, anrj share lessons loamt and success Stories wth other communities and

sustain8ble future. This is a new programme that ARCOS is in the process of integrating into its short and long-
tgrrn slralo91¢ interv&ntions in Rwanda with the aim to translate th8 principlos ol Education for Sustain8ble
Dev81opm&nl IESOI Into practic8. In 2020, ARCOS focused on building the capacity of students, t6acher8 and
parents on the Importance of the IVAC Ilnvesugalion. Vision. Action and Changel approach used by eci>schools
programme and seven steps lolbwod for schools to qualfy for Ihe eco4chool8 gre8n ftag.
We have started wlth 10 schools during 2020. The target is lo reach 35 Schools by 2024. ARCOS has lacS1Slaled
the establlyhment of Ecovschools govemance struclures at school. district and national levgls. These Inclvde the
Eco-schools Commille8s and Eco-Schoo15 partiamenls al 10 schools. District Advisory Commillge8, and the
National Advisory Committee. These commillees meet regularfy and separately to evaluate progress ol the
Implementation of program aettvilies and provide recommendation$ on critical asp8¢ts ol th¢ programmg.
In add51ion. ARCOS has organized a Training of Trniners ITOTI In EC0￿Cl￿OIS methodology gnd cllmale chang8
adapl8lion. This TOT has involved 330 participants including stu¢JentS and tèachers from the 10 pilot Schools
parents and local authorllies. Overall, 200 stud$nls ol which 50% were 9irf$ and 50% boys, 50 t&8chers of whlch
45Va women, 55.kn men, 40 pa￿nIS of which 43% We￿ women and 57% were men, and 40 local authorllles wer8
