As we present the accounts for 2025, 1 am remlnded once agaln of the strength, comp3551on, and
resllience that define ABe Concern Eastbourne and the community we serve. This year has brought
new challenge5, but also new opportunltles to deepen our impact and reaffirm our commltment to
supporting older people across Easlbourne and the surrounding areas.
The cost-of-living crlsis continues to affect many In our communlty. particularly older Indlvlduals who
face increaslng financlal pressures and soclal isolation. In response, our charity ha5 worked tlrelessty
to expand our services, advocate for the needs of older people, and ensure that every person we
5UPPOrt feels valued, heard, and respected.
We have made rneaninBful proBress In several areas-enhanclng our outreach, 51ren8ihenln8
partnershlps, and adapting our programmes to meet changing needs. These achlevements would not
have been p0551ble wlthout the dedlcatlon of our stsff, volunteers. trusteÈs, and supporters. Your

The Charlty Is governed by Artlcles of Association as amended on 27 November 2013 and was
incorporated as a Company on 31 March 2CWM. Age Concern Easlbourne owns a tradlng company -
A8e Con￿rn {Eastbournel Limlted whlch Is govemed by Artldes of Assoclatlon and Incorporated as a
Company on 25 June 1999. The Company No. of the tradln8 company IS 3796445. Any surplu5 from
the tradlng company Is 81ft alded to the main Companylcharlty.
Company Law requlre5 the Trustees to prepare accounts for the flnanclal year whlch 8fve a true and
falr view of the charltable company's state of affalrs at the year end, and of Its Income and expendlture
for that perlod.
In preparlng these accounts, the Trustees are requlreil to:

The Trustee Board takes responsibility for the strateBic directlon of the charlty and dele8ates day to
day operation5 to the Chlef Executlve and the Senior Management Team.

Age Concern Eastbourne has been provfdlng quallty servlces for local people slnce 1948. when It
fomied part of the 'Old People's Welfare CommSttee.' Our seNlces are aimed at the frall and
vulnerable, as well as those more aCt￿e and energetlc; so, whllst we are Justly proud of our care
centred proJects1Ske Homecare, Attendance Allowance support, Day Club and Makln8 Memorles we
also offer a varleiy of physlcal and cultural cholces 5ultable for most tastes.
We are a local charity carlng for local people wlth local volunteers and staff.
We belleve that every person should be able to look forward to later life wlth confidence; knowlng
that organlsatlons Ilke ours wlll always be there to provide help, advlce and opportunltles to take part
In actlvltles that promote Independence and wellbelng.
At the Venton Centre
The Venton Centre is a multl-purpose resource bulldlng thal is locaied behlnd the town's Beacon
Centre and wlthln a flve mlnute walk of the traln station. For over twenty five years it has been a Ilvely,
vibrant destlnatlon for the older people of Eastbourne offering upwards of over 40 activities and
seNices every week.
In recent years we have trled hard lo increase usage of the Centre outslde of normal Monday to Frlday
office hour5. for example the lfve music that is played in the lounge every Saturday mornln8. We now
also rent out the loun8e three evenlngs per week to a local acting school.

In the communlty
In addltlon to the actlvltles and se￿1￿5 on offer at the Venton Centre we work widety in the
community to take our seNlces to those who, for one reason or another, are unable to come to us.
Our volunteer advice workers help the frall and isolated to complete complicated beneflts fomis and
our Homecare seplice provides both personal and domestic care.
The E85tbourne Shed project15 the largest of its type In the country deliverlng over three separate
sltes -Hampden ParK Langney Prlory and, followln8 a ￿cent move, Flnmere Road.

All Items sold In the shops were donated and the proceeds from sales 80 directly towards provldlng
the many servlces we offer for the older people of Eastbourne.
We have always relled upon on volunteers to asslst wlth the day to day runnln& from workln8 at the
tlll and on the shop floor to helplng prepare stock for sale.
The Warehouse, located In Flnmere Road, wlll house notjust one of the Shed projects but also a store
space for the Tradlng company.

The strateglc plan was developed by the Board to ensure that the charlty could deliver on its strategic

The servlce grew In Importance durSn8 24125 both In temis of meetlng our"mls51on° but also as an
Income generator for the charity a5 a whole. As of the I Sept 2025 the servlce had 15 care and
support workers. Inevltably the numbers of staff wlll go up and down In thls enterprlse, people
leave, people join, but our new approach to recrubtment, quick en8a8ement with appllcants, found
replacements for 3 leavers withln two months.
Recrultment has been hampered however by delays wlthln the Olsclosure and Barrln8 Service
IDBS). This Is partlcularly problematlc when candidate5 have rnoved home frequently over recent
years.
The target of 1.500 hours of care each month. to be reached by the end of 2026, Is provlng to be
unreallstlc but the hours are steadily Increasing month by month-650 hours (Jun 25), 705 hours
{Jul 25) and 740 hours (Aug 25).
The servlce provldes personal caie as well as non-re8ulated actlvltles such as shoppSn8,
companionshlp and cleaning.
All cllents a￿ assessed and care plans revlewed on an Indfvldual basls. The plan records the cllent's
life history, social networks and contacts, and preferences for activitie5 and hobble5 In order that
the client is offered access to those network5 and activitles whlch are appropriate and desired.

Assist older peopleln maxlmlsing income
The Welfare rights 5etvice assisted 356 people wlth Atlendance Allowance (AA} and Personal
Independence Payments IPIP?. an increase of 122 on the previous year. This has been achieved by
employing a 21 hour per week case worker supported by one volunteer home visltor. A remarkable
achlevement.
The service was supported by grants from East Sussex County Council.
AA Is a beneflt that helps people aged 6S and above wlth care costs. The appllcation fomis are lon8
and complicated and often older people understale Ihe extent of thelr dlsability or illness which
means thatthey are le55 Ilkely to recelve the help they need. That 15 why our tralned staff and
volunteers are cruclal in helpin8 the sl¢k and dlsabled In the town.
In ihe year 24125 AA amounted to £72.65 per week for people who needed help in the day OR at
night and £108.55 per week if they needed help day AND at nlght. The benefit contrlbutes to
allowing older people to remaln inde￿ndent and to remain at home.
Attendance Allowance Is not means tested so Is addltlonal to any other funds cllents receive.
PIP is a beneflt that helps peDple a8ed 16 to 64 wlth the extra costs of a lon8-term health condltlon
or disabllity.

enjoyable activities has a significant impact on the health. wellbeing and quality of life for older
people and we are proud that during the year under review WÈ were able to offer a wlde ranEe of

In any glven week there are over 20 different activitles taklng place within the Venton Centre. Thls
includes four different type5 of dance class, tal chl, seated exercise. pllate5, scrabble, chess, choir,
actin& current affairs and quizzes.
An Important addltion to the Ilfe of the Venton Centre has been the Saturday morning music
sessions organised by the Underground Theatre Group. Every Saturday, local musicians entertain
upwards of one hundred people In the Centre's large lounge. Vi51tors can enjoy a drink, during the
Intermlsslon and learn more about the Centre In general and what Age Concern Eastbourne can
offer.
We also started hiring out the lounge In the evenlngs. three days per week for a group offerlng
actlng classes for adult5. Th151s part of a broader stratègy of utlllslng the bulldlng outslde It5 nornial
hours of 9 to 5, Monday to Friday.
bj Day Opportunltles (encomposslng Doy Club and Making Mernorles)
Day Club and Maklng Memorles operates five days per week, Mon to Frl between 10 a,m, and 3
p.m. It Is based In our spaclous and comfortable lounge where tralned staff and volunteers
guarantee a warm welcome to those who may be feellng lonely or Isolated or who may nol leave
thelr own homes to 50cla115e very often.
The gentle actlvltles that are provlded are both soclal and therapeutic and are designed to help
everybody feel at home and although everyone 15 encouraged to join in there is absolutely no
pressure to do so.
The 5ervlce has undergone frequent revlews; publiclty drlves wlth potential referral agencles and
users and offers taster sessions to potential cllents.
c) Informotion & Advl¢e
Information & advice has lon8 been an essential element of the servlces we provlde for the older
people of Eastbourne. Tralned volunteers help answer questions on a whole host of tQPlC5 whether
they corbcern national issues such as care, benefits and health or more local concerns Such as publlc
transport or housing. The team is always ready to provlde comprehensive, authoritatlve, impartial
and independent help either over the telephone, in person or by e-mail or letter.
We strlve to dellver and advice seNice at least three mornln8s per week but we are vulnerable to
the sudden departure of volunteer advisers. Durlng 24/25 two such adv15er5 left at short notice
meaning that we have only been able to offer advice on Wed and Friday mornlngs, Consequently.
advisers can only be seen by appointment to allow us to manage demand, A prlority for our new
volunteer recruitment project will be lo find and traln new advlsers to expand the servlce.
Allied to the advice provlded by our volunteef advisers we have monthly session5 from paid
professionals - 501icitor5, accountanls- to whom we can make appolntment5 for 30 mlnutes of free
advi￿.

The key development for Ihe Eastboume Shed durlng the year has been the rnove from Its
premlses In Fort Lane to a much larger slte in Flnmere Road.
Eastbourne Shed has been worklng out of a garage space In Forti2￿ slnce 2015. Whllst tt was a great
success ty Ets own I￿hts. also actin8 as a tempkte for the sltes In Langney and Hampden Park, space was
always an ts$￿ The Fort Lane Shed was around I,C(tl sq. feet In area meanlngthat there were
limitstK)n5 on the number of Shedders we could hold at any one tlme- 8 at most. There very Ilttle
room for wood and materfals whlch resulted In the Shed becomlng duttered and therefore potentlally
unsafe.
The new slte, a warehouse In Flnmere Road, less than 10 mlnutes walking dlstance from the slte in
Fort Lane, 15 8,0(X) square feet In area wfth offlces, a kltchen, a mezzanlne. and was offered on a 3
year licence at a rate of £11,000 p.a.
It wlll allow for:

Langney Prlory
The Langney Shed Is located In the 8rounds of the old Langney PrlDry. just off Etchin8ham Road. the
freehokl of the land, the Priory and the Shed are owned by a bcal business man who is 5UPPOrtlve
of what the Shed does.
The Shed is a brllllant resource forthe area and for the older people that use St-ft15 a truly posltlve
ommunlty where Shedders enjoy each otherfs company, laugh and generally have fun. Thelr
community isn't limited to the Shed doors wlth the more able Shedders helping the fraller with
8ardenin8, plckln8 up prescrlptions and transport to and from the Shed.
The two large Indoor sections of the Shed can hold up to 10 Shedders each at a tlme and the
pleasant grounds In which the Shed Is set are especially popular wlth Shedders In the warmer
Months. This access to the outslde Is especlally Important for prolects involvlng strong adheslve5 or
paints.
Durlng 24125 Lan8ney shed had the most slgned up members wlth between 50 and 55 Shedders on
the books at any one tlme- on a normal day we vKiuld expect to see between 20 and 25 vlslt the
Shed.
The Hampden Park Shed
The Hampden Park Shed now has 37 members. most of whom are women. The actlvltles taklng
place wlthln the shed can fall wlth5n the general headln8 of arts and crafts. It Involves uslnE
imaglnatlon and hands to make objects Ilke potteryi knlttln& woodworklng, Jewellery, and
lacemaklnB.
More recently the Shed has worked alongside an anlmatlon company called Snapped Art who have
been comml55i0ned to produce a fllm on the Issue of floodlng. We held three workshops In the
Shed to which members of the publlc as well as S￿dders were Invlted.
The Shedders produced props and characters for the fllm Includlng a fro8J a boat a tree trunk,
greenhouse, rlver and a pond (made with fabric that will be 38ltated to gSve the Impre5slon of
runnin8 waterl. The fllm wlll employ stoplmotlon animatlon and wlll be dlsplayed in the
Eastboume Beacon Centre.
The Shed has become such 8 focal polnt of community artlvlty In the area that we now run a
weekly community café on Saturdays where local people can come have a cuppa. a plece of cake
and find out what's happenin8 in Halnpden Park.

volunteers who wlll help tldy up and hopefully learn some u5efvl Social skllls.

deaded to set aslde £20,000 per yearto allow u5 to purchase a new one.
c) Walklng for Wellness
The Walkin8 for Wellness group provide5 an opportunlty for people over 50 in the Eastbourne area
to do regular short health walks In a supported soclable envlronment to improve and maintaln
fitness levels. Up to 50 people a week tske part In one of our walks. the first takes place on Monday
morning along the beach front and the second start5 at the tea chalet Sn Hampden Park.
At the end of the walk many of the partlclpants share tea and coffee In a local café, addln8 to the
air of soclabillty.
The walks tske about an hour to complete and our 5UPPOrted by our trained, vclunteer walk
leaders.

Mondays also sees our acupuncture and ear wax removal 5ervlce; thls latter Is a new 5ervlce to the
Venton Centre coming about a5 a direct consequence of GP surgeries no lonEer provldlng It.
Nail care appolntment5 are provided on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays by our self-
employed nall tare speclallst. At £23 per appolntment thls Is a value for money seThlce that is
providing Important income for the Charlty as a whole.
Good foot care Is essentlal for mobS11ty and has a huge Impact upon the Indlvldual's wellbeln8.
On average each week we see 40 to 50 people per week In the Venton Centre.
Also, on a Tuesday we offer massage. myofasclal release and cran105acral therapy by a tralned

The Venton Centre has been a community asset for 25 years. not Just for the charity but for the
town of Eastbourne a5 a whole. It is however an expenslve bulldlng to run and maintain; Ihe last 18

Lacey Tate, Screwfix and in partlcular the Venton Trust we have:

The charty has four connected Facebook accounts. one for the charlty, one for the shops and two
for the Shed& Thls means that we have excellent Interartion wlth the public with at least one post
every day. The work of the Day club, with photographs of our clients having fun, are partlcularly
popular. There Is also an Instagram account connected to the charltvs Facebook account.
b) Outreoch
During Jan to March 2025 our outreach tearn completed a totsl 0132 sesslons at 19 dlfferent
venues around Eastbourne, ranglng from communlty centres, shopping tentres through to Church
groups. Havlng a presence at dlfferent places enabled a large proportion of the local communtty to
learn about Age Concem Eastbourne wlth 511 pensloners speakln8 wlth us and takln8 Informatlon
away about Age Concern Eastbourne.
The majorlty of the people we spoke to. and many people who passed by our standltable,
commented on the great work of A8e Concern Ea5tbourne.
For those people who had never been to The Venton Centre, or had not been for some tlme, we
gave out 69 free coffee/tea vouchers with the alm of allowln8 them to vlew the Centre arxl see the
rray of actlvlties and seniices avallable to them.

Penslon credlt Is a benefit that helps older people on a low Income better afford the cost of lfvlng.

Our outreach team promoted uptake of pension credit through visiting supermarkets. communlty
spaces like the publlc Ilbrary and wlth talk5 to local charity groups.
Financlal Information is a delicate subject so when meetlng people In publlc places our workers
provlded 8eneral informatlon on benefit entltlement. People were then encoura8ed to contact the
Venton Centre to meet our advice staff with a vtew to making a claim for penslon credlt. Durlng the
year we raised nearly £70,0(N) In penslon credlt for clients
bj Household Support Fund
To help people with the increased cost of Ilvlng government once agaln provided financial support
through Sts -Household Support Fund". Age Concern Eastbourne put together a partnershlp of
Mathew 25 M155lon, YMCA Eastbourne and Wlllln8don Trees Community Centre. Our role was to
adminlster the grant and to provide financlal support to users and c15ents of the Venton Centre and
Its services.

Iteffls and larger pleces of furnlture that we have hltherto been unable to accept. It should also
mean that the shop storage areas wlll be less cluttered arKI thus more attractlve to potentlal
volunteers.

Eastbourne we are fortunate to be able to call or) the services of many dedicated staff and
volunteers whose professionalism enables u5 to make a positive difference to the Ilves of
so many people In Eastbourne.
As at t￿ 31 March 2025 the charlty employed 6 full tlme and 8 part tlme members of staff the
equivalent of 11 full tlme employees.
In the Hornecare buslne55, In addltlon to the core staff of the reg15tered manager and two part
tlme senlor care workers, we employ 11 Care and Support workers on varlable hours contracts.
As at the 31 March 2025 the Trading Company employed a full tlme SenlDr Shop Manager, flve full
tlme shop managers, one part tlme shop menager and one part tlme van drlver- 7.5 FfE.
b) Volunteers
We have been fortunate to secure one year fundin8 from Awards For All to help us ￿buIld our
volunteer base. A part time volunteer coordinator has been employed to make our training and
Inductlon systems more robust and to promote the benefit of volunteerln8 t¢ the Eastboume
publlc.
The charity has stru88led to rebulld its volunteer base slnce Covld. before the pandemlc we had
around 250 volunteers and although we have seen some slEns of recovery In volunteer numbers
we currently have only 96 volunteers on our books.Thls has had a dramatlc lrnpact upon our
abllity to deliver activSties and servkes. For examplei pre Covld we were able to run flve day5 of
Infomiation and advlce , usin8 a team of tralned volunteer advisers, but now, post Covid, we are
Ilmlted to three mornlng5 per week.
Slmllarly, because of a lack of drlvers and passen8er a5s1stants, we have had t0 5U5pend our bu5
excursions and concentrate on transportin8 the vulnerable cllents wlth dementla to the Venton
Centre.

FINANCIAL REVIEW
The consolldated results of the charity and Its subsidiary are set out In the Statement of Flnancial
Actlvities. The Group's total consolidated funds held at the balance sheet are £1,274,204 which
consist of £90,340 held In restricted funds, £84,827 in designated fund5, £62.698 hekl in general
unrestricted funds and £1,036,339 in endowment funds. The charivs net movement in funds for
the year was therefore a deficlt of £77.961.
Whllst thls was a dSsappoSntment ft was the group's flrst10ss slnce 2019120 and over the last four
years Age Concern Eastbourne had produced a cumulat6ve surplus of £338,286.
The retall units produced a surplus £11,067 whSch was £27,1￿) worse than forecast. Whllst two
shops returned reasonable proflts the other two had a combined loss of £15,OLX). Those loss makln8
shops have leases runnlng untll sprlng of 2027 and If thelr fortunes do not turnaround serlou5
conslderatlon wlll have to be 8lven to closln8 them.
For the first tlme since 2006 the charlty did not recelve any le8acles. Indeed, the value of a legacy
notlfled In 23124 had to be reduced by £19.259 because the flnal estate was smaller than at first
repDrted to us.
Golnq Concem
A5 part of the annual budget process the Trustees have undertaken a thorouBh review of the year
ahead and approved a 12 month cashflow projectlon. This has glven them a reasonable expertatlon
that the company has adequate resources to continue In operatlonal exlstence for the foreseeable
future. For thls reason, they contlnue to adopt the goln8 concern basts In preparln8 the financlal
staternents.

imposition and withdrawal of tarlffs by the USA govemrnent have had a mllercoaster effect on our
