Structure. governance and management
Governance
In the year urKler review, the charity was govemed by fAie truslees, followng the induction of
a new member of the Board, Laura M¢Cartan. in 2021. and who formalty joined us on 1.
January as a trustee.
Trustees are chosen for their personal qualities. skills, and understanding of the needs and
aspirations of the charity and ils partners. The trustees are appointed by the existing board
on the basis of their part￿ular CoMpeten￿eS and are required to make a declaration of
acceptance and willingness to act in Ihe interest arKJ trust of the Charity. Trustees are
appointed for a te￿n of three years. which can b8 renewed. At any one time there musl be a
minimum of two trustees.
In terms of crvil law the charity is govemed by a trust deed dated 1st October 2003 , and is
registered with the Charity Commission. Charity Registration Number 1101316.
The trustees are uhimatety responsible for the policies. activities and assets of the ¢harity.
The Board of Trustees meets a minimum of four times a year to review developments with
regard to the charty and its activities and make any important decisions. The truslees have
paid due regard to guidance issued by the Charity Commission, including relating io public
benefit, in deciding what actmties that charty should undertake. When necessary, the
trust8es seek advice and support from professional advisers. The day to day management of
the charity's activities. and the implementation of policies, ts shared amorKJ the trustees.
Kiota is a small organisation and trustees work on a voluntary. part-time basis. The majollty
of KIOTA'S work is carried out by In￿tees, with operational assistance from volunteers. In
order to eam and maintan ¢onfthn¢e in our projects, the Trustees work to ensure that
money is spent wisely. and that the projects have lasting benefits for the community.
Operational work
To date, all Kiota's projects have been joint ventures with Tanzanian NGO KIWOHEDE
(registration number 8581 and Compliance NGOIF111005351, established in 1999 by
Tanzanian women. This choTrce was made after the founders of Kiota spent seven months at
two of KIWOHEDE'S centres during 2002. The Trustees of Kiota have decided that
KIWOHEDE conlinues to be well placed to best use the lunds raised by Kiota in order to
r8alise Kiota's vision.

that empowers women and young people by provKJing them wtth safety, and the knowledge
and skills to build safe and secure futures.

Klota supported work in 2022
The Bunju Multipurpose Centre and the KIWOHEDE Open S¢hool
Since 2010, Kiota has supported the Bunju Multipurpose Centre. with a focus on the
KIWOHEDE Open School. The KIWOHEDE Open School is a secondary school specifically
for children and young people who have been identrfied as highly disadvantaged and
vulnerable. with a primary focus i)n young wcrfnen. The Bunju Multipurpose Centre is also
home to a social welfare team providing a range ol inteNentK)ns to young people in need of
support. and a vo¢ati¢)nal training programme. The Centre is Ic¢ated in the east Afri¢an
country of Tanzania. just north of Dar es Salaam.

The centre offers secondary education to young people who have historically been unable to
access state secondary education because ol thair circumstances. The KIWOHEDE Open
Schcd operates under the Open Distance Learning Programme of th8 Institute of Adult
Education. Tanzania. which gives our beneficiaries the opportunity to study a secondary
education under the govemment curriculum. Students study Physics. Chemistry. Biology.
Maths, Geography, History, GIV￿ and English. with additional sessions in IT, Sport and Lrfe
Skills and knowledge. such as around sexual and reproductive heallh and rights. children's
rights and welfare in the home and the community; and polilical participation including
through student elections arKI the appointment of student representatives.
The Bunju Multipurpose Centre also offers Vocational Training. As an integrated part of the
programm8 model students have access to counselling.
Kiota supported the establishment of the KIWOHEDE Open School in 2010. and fully or part
funded the school since.
Who our work SUPPC•rts and why it matters
The circumstances of the boneficiaries
Those attending the Cenlwe have faced severe difkulties in their Irwes. These include
experiences of exploitative or forced labour in Ihe informal sector (for example as domestic
workers. in quarries, bars or as food vendors). violence, including sexual violence. and l or

neglect. trafficking. early or forced marriage; motherhood before completing edu¢alion'
discrimination on the basis of disability: discrimination on the basis of albinism. and extreme
povety. In 2022, extreme povety and forced domestic labour wefe cited as the leading
problem, with some cases of Sexu￿ violence. neglect and discrimination on the basis of
albinism. However. we are aware sludents may have experienced multiple traumas.
Beneficiaries of the Bunju Mullipup)se Centre. including the KIWOHEDE Open School are
referred by or identrfied in the community by KIWOHEDE'S social wetrfare department. Each
young person is assessed at the centre. and the team continue to support throughout the
time that the students are with KIWOHEDE. AIS students have access to counselling. medical
care. lrfe skills sessions and food as part of this holistic package of support.

79 young pecyle were supported by the Bunju Mults'purpose Centre in 2022.
61 young pecyle accessed secondary education at the KIWOHEDE Open School during
2022. 12 attended V￿atIOnal training programmes, and 4 were shellered. Within the year, 8
young peopla were reunified families following social wemare interlentions.

At the beginning of the year, Laura Mccartan. who completed an irKluction trial period as a
Trustee in 2021 fomially joined the board. Laura has played a key role in shaping Kiota's
fundraising and communications.
We would like to express special thanks to Martin Choularton who provided vital and much
needed adminislrative support for Kiota's Glastonbury Festival volunteering arKJ fundraising
opporbjnities in 2022. We would also like to thank Tom Lee who ¢ontinues to support Kiota

Financial report
Trustees are pleased to wesent the financial report for 2022.
Following the challenging onvironment in 2020 and 2021 due to covi&19 and the impact on
the fundraising landscape. Kiola is pleased to re￿rt on a successful year for fundraising in
2022. After two parKlemic-related fallow years. Kiota returned to fundraising connected to
Glastonbury Feslival, which represented our largest income slream in 2022. and also
maintained some of the diverse fundraising streams sel up in set up in recent years.
The Trustees met on a regular basis to monitor the operating and financial environment and
sPe￿Il¢allY Kiota's linancaal posttion, and to forecast income and plan expenditure and
operations.

Although Kiota does not have a fomal reserves Fdicy, trustees aim lo have six months of
running costs available in cash. or in known planned income, at any time. During 2022. Kiota
has made progress in returning to this Fosilion. and at year end. hekl almost live months in
running ¢osts, with kr￿wn fundraising activities enabling us to forecast beyond six months.
NB: in 2021, we recetved £4.426 from Marsden Ray￿thOM Solicitors Limited as Ihey were
holding money for which the pr￿er owner could not bo found and were gNen authority to
pay this money to Charity. As part of the agreement Kiots a¢¢epted ihe condition that if the
rightlul owner comes forward or is lound Kiota will repay the money in full. We a¢¢epted
these conditions and the risk aitached as we have secured commitment from more than one
in(thvidual donor that they would match this sum rf ￿.01a is required to repay the money.

at that time to donate and designate funds towards infrastructure cc6ts. In 2022, this covered

Restricted funds are furKls that are held in a separate account in connection to our
fundraising woth at Glastonbury Festival. All funds in this account are held as deposits for
