In 2024-25 the charity had two programmes, the Stephen Spender Prize and an education programme.

## **`The Stephen Spender Prize`**

Launchedin2004inassociationwiththeGuardian,andfundedin2025bytheJohnSCohen Foundation,
Old Possum'sPracticalTrust and the Queen'sCollegeTranslationExchange,this annual prize celebrates the
artofliterarytranslation.Itaimstoencourageanewgenerationofliterarytranslators,andto improve
motivationfor and uptakeof languagelearningin schoolsin the UK and Ireland.Entrantstranslatea poem
fromanylanguage- ancientormodern- intoEnglish,and submittheoriginalversionand their translation
togetherwitha'creativeresponse'.Thatresponsecanrangefromashortwrittencommentaryon the
translation,toavisualillustrationofthepoemandtranslation,toanaudioorvideorecordingof the
entrant reading the translation.

## **`Stephen Spender Prize 2025:Focus on Young People`**

In recentyearsSST has focusedincreasinglyon workwith youngpeople,and has seen significantimpact in
termsofyoungpeople'sconfidence,communicationskills,andwellbeing.In2025weredoubled our
commitmentto thisworkby pausingthe Opencategoryforadultsto channelmoreresourcestowards the
developmentofthePrize'syouthandteachercategories.Throughthisstrategicreorientation,we were
abletofurtherdevelopoursupportforschoolswithanewresourceshubtoguideteachersand learners
througheverystepofenteringthePrize,fromchoosingapoemtoproducingacreativeresponse. The
impactof thisenhancedresourceprovisionwasborneoutimmediatelyin the 2025Prize,whichsaw entry
numbers increase across every category, as well as a record number of schools taking part.

Toensurethatevenmoreschoolscouldtakeadvantageofourcreativetranslationresourceswith their
students,wecontinuedtoexpandourteachersupportscheme.Nowcountingalmost1500teachers- the
vastmajorityfromstateschools-theschemeprovidesguidanceandactivityideasthrough regular
e-newsletters,supportingteachersacrosstheUKandIrelandtointegrateinternationalpoetryinto their
teaching during the Prize submission period and beyond.

AswellasenablinglearnersofallagestogetinvolvedintheSchoolsLaureatePrize,wecontinued to
developourTeacherLaureatePrizetoencourageteacherstoparticipateactivelyinpoetry translation,
whilstfosteringnewopportunitiesforexchangeanddiscussionwiththeirstudentsbysharingin the
experience of the translation process.

Inadditiontoenteringthroughtheirschools,youngpeoplecouldstilltakepartindependentlyin 2025,
throughour IndividualYouthEntrystrand,whichembodiesthe Prize'sfoundingmissionto "encourage and
stimulatea new generationof literarytranslators".In his 2025judge'scommentary,judgeTaherAdel paid
tributetotheremarkabletranslationtalentsthattheIndividualYouthEntrystrandcontinuesto foster,
notingthat"theseyoungertranslatorsmatchedand oftensurpassedthe standardsset by adultentrants in
previous years."

Acrosseverystrandofthecompetition,wesawthetangibleimpactofourongoinginitiativesto widen
participationfrompupilsatUK/Irishstateschoolsandtoproducemorestate-schoolwinners and
commendees.In2025,over75%ofthestudentswhoengagedwiththeprizeintheirschoolscame from
primaryandsecondarystateschools,withstate-schoolentrantsaccountingforthevastmajority of
winnersandcommendees.Thisdiversitywasaccompaniedbyacontinuedincreaseinthenumber of
languagesbeingtranslated.In2025,wereceivedtranslationsfromarecord-breaking81languages across
theyouthandteachercategories,includingmanyHome,HeritageandCommunitylanguagesthat are
rarely visible in the curriculum.

AlongsidethePrize'smultilingualstrands,in2025wecontinuedtocelebratepoetryfromaround the
Lusophoneworldwith the secondyearof our PortugueseSpotlightfocus.Followingin the footstepsof our
previousUrdu,RomanianandUkrainianSpotlights,thesecondeditionofthePortugueseSpotlight Prize
includedanevenmoreextensivebookletofsuggestedpoems,featuringworkbypoetsfrom Portugal,
Brazil,Goa,AngolaandMozambiqueforyoungpeopleofallagestotranslate.Wearegratefulfor the
support of a dedicated group of academics and translators, who co-curated this booklet pro bono.

## **`(a) Literature Fires the Imagination`**

Insummer2025welaunchedaveryexcitingnewproject,withfundingfromtheWelsh Government's
CurriculumforWalessupportprogramme.'LiteratureFirestheImagination'is a three-yearprogramme to
supportteachersofInternationalLanguagesinWalestointegrateliteratureintotheirteaching, from
primaryschoolonwards.The new Curriculumfor Waleshas a strongemphasison creativityand culture, on
criticalthinkingand interculturalawareness,all of which are centralto our work at SST. During this year we
begantosetuptheprogrammebyrecruitingconsultantstoco-designand-deliverProfessional Learning
and tools for teachers across the three years.

## **`(b) MLC Young Translators`**

Followingasuccessfulpilotin2023-24,thisyearwelaunchedanewthree-yearprogrammeof Creative
TranslationforschoolsinWestLondon,withfundingfromJohnLyon'sCharity.Theworkinthis year
focusedonrecruitingthreepartnerschoolsforthefirstyearofdelivery(2025-26)andrecruiting and
trainingSSTAssociatestodelivertheprogrammeintheseschools.Werecruitedthreeschoolsand three
Associates,todeliverfive-weekprogrammesinFrench,GermanandSpanish.Theprogrammeis designed
tobuildpupils'confidence,interculturalawarenessandcreativeexpression,andtoencourageuptake of
languages at GCSE and beyond.

We offeredTranslatorsin Schools[TiS] supportto a numberof arts and educationalorganisations, enabling
themtodeveloptheirCreativeTranslationpracticeforprogrammeswithyoungpeople.The most
prominentof these was Year 2 of our partnershipprojectwith NationalCentrefor Writing,'Young Creative
Translators'.Followingcarefulevaluationofthefirstyearofdelivery,were-designedthe teacher
professionaldevelopmentpartoftheprogrammetofitintooneday.Theprogrammedelivery was
managedby NCW,and deliveredto 12 teachers,who went on to deliverthe 6-sessionprogrammeto their
KeyStagepupils.Theprogrammewasexternallyevaluated,whichfoundthatiteffectively changed
teacher's practice and had a very positive impact on learners, successfully:

translation techniques within their curriculum teaching.

AlliedtoYoungCreativeTranslatorsinNorfolkwasasmallerprojectcentredonGreatYarmouth. With
fundingfromEnjoyGreatYarmouth,theLocalCulturalEducationPartnership,wetrainedtwo local
teachersin creativetranslationand supportedthedeliverytotheirKS2pupils.Theteachersrolledthis out
acrossthewholekeystage,deliveringtoeverychildin Years3-6.Thepartnershipendedwitha workshop
for Year 5 pupils with an SST Associate, and an exhibition of the children's creative pieces in autumn 2025.

TiSworkalsoincludedapartnershipwiththeAHRC-fundedFeministTranslationNetwork(FTN),based at
theUniversityof Birmingham.SSTco-hosteda symposiumat TheQueen'sCollege,Oxford,which included
a panel on creative translation in schools, featuring SST team members and associates.

and trained Oxford students to deliver these workshops.

Old Possum'sPracticalTrust and the Queen'sCollegeTranslationExchange,this annual prize celebrates the
artofliterarytranslation.Itaimstoencourageanewgenerationofliterarytranslators,andto improve
motivationfor and uptakeof languagelearningin schoolsin the UK and Ireland.Entrantstranslatea poem
fromanylanguage- ancientormodern- intoEnglish,and submittheoriginalversionand their translation
togetherwitha'creativeresponse'.Thatresponsecanrangefromashortwrittencommentaryon the
translation,toavisualillustrationofthepoemandtranslation,toanaudioorvideorecordingof the
entrant reading the translation.

In recentyearsSST has focusedincreasinglyon workwith youngpeople,and has seen significantimpact in
termsofyoungpeople'sconfidence,communicationskills,andwellbeing.In2025weredoubled our
commitmentto thisworkby pausingthe Opencategoryforadultsto channelmoreresourcestowards the
developmentofthePrize'syouthandteachercategories.Throughthisstrategicreorientation,we were
abletofurtherdevelopoursupportforschoolswithanewresourceshubtoguideteachersand learners
througheverystepofenteringthePrize,fromchoosingapoemtoproducingacreativeresponse. The
impactof thisenhancedresourceprovisionwasborneoutimmediatelyin the 2025Prize,whichsaw entry

prominentof these was Year 2 of our partnershipprojectwith NationalCentrefor Writing,'Young Creative
Translators'.Followingcarefulevaluationofthefirstyearofdelivery,were-designedthe teacher
professionaldevelopmentpartoftheprogrammetofitintooneday.Theprogrammedelivery was
managedby NCW,and deliveredto 12 teachers,who went on to deliverthe 6-sessionprogrammeto their
KeyStagepupils.Theprogrammewasexternallyevaluated,whichfoundthatiteffectively changed
teacher's practice and had a very positive impact on learners, successfully:

## **ACCOUNTS FOR THE PERIOD ENDED 31 AUGUST 2025**
In connection with your preparation of the above accounts, the following confirmations are made based on enquiries of management and staff with relevant knowledge and experience (and where appropriate, of inspection of supporting documentation) sufficient to satisfy ourselves that we can properly make each of these confirmations to you. We recognise that these confirmations are needed in addition to information obtained by you from the accounting records of the company to enable you to properly prepare the company’s accounts. The information is, to the best of our knowledge and belief, true and fair bearing in mind the requirements of the Companies Act 2006.
## **Charity Records**
All the accounting records have been made available to you for the purpose of your examination and all the transactions undertaken by the charity have been properly reflected and recorded in the accounting records. All other records and related information, including minutes of all management and shareholders meetings, have been made available to you.
## **Responsibility for Accounts**
We acknowledge as directors our responsibility for the preparation of the company’s accounts, which have been prepared on our behalf.
## **Company Records**
All the accounting records have been made available to you for the purpose of your work and all the transactions undertaken by the company have been properly reflected and recorded in the accounting records. All other records and related information, including minutes of all management and shareholders meetings, have been made available to you.
## **Fixed Assets**
The accounts correctly reflect all fixed assets and changes thereto.

## **Stocks, Work In Progress and Amounts Recoverable on Contracts**
There was no stock, work in progress or amounts recoverable under contracts for the year.
I understand that stock would be valued by the directors at the lower of cost or net realisable value having taken into account all relevant factors.
I understand that work in progress represents unbilled work at the balance sheet date where the company’s right to consideration for the work undertaken is dependent on a future event outside of the company’s control.
I understand that amounts recoverable on contracts represent unbilled work at the balance sheet date where the company has a contractual right to consideration for the work performed.
## **Debtors and prepayments**
Balances included in the accounts are all valid debtors or prepayments.
## **Cash and Bank balances**
All cash and bank balances held by the company are reflected in the accounts.
## **Liabilities**
All known liabilities of material amount at the accounting date are shown in the accounts. We confirm that there are no disputes, which call into doubt any of the liabilities shown.
## **Security Given**
Details of all security given by the company, whether formally or informally charged, has been correctly registered as necessary. We confirm that all relevant details have been brought to your attention and are correctly reflected in the accounts where disclosure is required by statute or Financial Reporting Standard.
## **Contingent Liabilities**
At the balance sheet date there was no material contingent or potential liabilities under claims pending or threatened litigation.

## **Future Commitments**
No future capital expenditure commitments existed at the accounting date. At the balance sheet date the company had no significant commitments for forward purchase of items in excess of normal requirements or significantly in excess of market price.
At the balance sheet date the company had not entered into any significant sales commitments at prices which could result in a loss.
## **Post Balance Sheet Events**
There has been no event since the balance sheet date, which requires disclosing or which would materially affect the amounts in the accounts.
## **Going Concern**
So far as we are aware, there is no reason to believe that the company will not remain a going concern (that is, it will be able to meet its current liabilities as they fall due for payment) for the next twelve months. We confirm that in our assessment of the company’s ability to continue as a going concern, we have considered a period of at least twelve months from the date of the approval of the company’s accounts.
## **Income**
We confirm that all grants, donations and other income, including those subject to special terms or conditions or received for restricted purposes, have been notified to you. There have been no breaches of terms or conditions during the period regarding the application of such income.
## **Transactions with Trustees**
The company has had at no time during the year made any arrangement, transaction or agreement to provide credit facilities (including loans, quasi-loans or credit transactions) with any of the directors nor to guarantee or provide for security for such matters.
## **Related Party Transactions**
We confirm that we have provided you with details of all related party transactions relevant to the company, and that we are not aware of any further related party matters, which require disclosure in the company’s accounts.
## **Legal Framework**
We confirm that we have advised you of all known laws or regulations, which are central to the company's ability to conduct its business and that there, were no instances of non-compliance with these laws and regulations during the year.

## **Internal Controls**
We acknowledge our responsibility for the design and implementation of internal controls to prevent and detect fraud. We confirm that we have disclosed to you the results of our own assessment of the risk of fraud in the charity.
## **Fraud**
We confirm that there have been no actual or suspected instances of fraud involving management or employees who have a significant role in internal control or that could have a material effect on the financial statements. We also confirm that we are not aware of any allegation of fraud by former employees, regulators or others.
## **General**
We understand that LMDB Limited have prepared the accounts on behalf of the directors. We confirm our understanding of the accounts and we have requested explanations of any of the points that we are unclear about. We are of the opinion that the accounts show a true and fair view of the results for the period and the state of affairs at the balance sheet date.
