ThetrusteeswhoarealsodirectorsofthecharityforthepurposesoftheCompaniesAct2006, present

PracticeapplicabletocharitiespreparingtheiraccountsinaccordancewiththeFinancial Reporting
Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).

Thetrustees,whoarealsodirectorsofthecharityforthepurposesoftheCompaniesAct2006, present

`OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES`

`Objectives and aims`

- Toadvancepubliceducationabout,andappreciationof,thearts,particularlyliterature,inandafter the
twentiethcentury,withspecialbutnotexclusivereferencetothelifeandworksofStephenSpender and
his contemporaries;

- To promote, and assist in promoting, research into the arts;

- To promote such other charitable purposes as the trustees may decide.

InspiredbyStephenSpender'sliteraryinterestsandachievementsaspoet,critic,editor,translator and
championofhumanrights,theStephenSpenderTrustaimsoverthenextthreeyearstoconsolidate its
position as a leading advocate of literary translation, both educational and professional.

Insettingandreviewingourobjectivesandaims,andinplanningandcarryingoutouractivities,we have
due regard to the public benefit guidance published by the Charity Commission. In particular, the Trust has:

- Increasedpublicappreciationofinternationalliteratureandtheartofliterarytranslationbyholding and
promoting the Stephen Spender Prize.

- Reachedouttonewaudiencesforinternationalliteratureandliterarytranslationby promotingthe Prize
through the media and in schools across the UK.

- Providedsignificantopportunitiesfor culturalparticipationamonggroupsof peoplewho might otherwise
be excluded, by running our education programmes.

-Encouragedhighstandardsofliterarytranslationbyraisingartisticskillsandnurturingand celebrating
talent through the Prize and education programmes.

- Promoted intercultural understanding.

`Charitable activities`

In 2020-21 the charity had two programmes, the Stephen Spender Prize and an education programme.

`The Stephen Spender Prize`

Launchedin 2004in associationwiththeGuardian,and fundedin 2020by theRothschildFoundation, The
PolonskyFoundation,TheOldPossum'sPracticalTrust,TheSacklerTrust,andTheBjörnsonand Prodan
Foundation,thisannualprizecelebratestheartofliterarytranslationandaimstoencouragea new
generationofliterarytranslatorsandlanguage-learners.Entrantstranslateapoemfromanylanguage -
ancientormodern-intoEnglish,andsubmitboththeoriginalandtheirtranslationtogetherwitha short
commentary.Therearecashprizesforwinnersin fourcategories:Open,18-and-under,16-and-under and
14-and-under.The16-and-undercategorywasanewadditionfor2020,aimingtodiversifythe languages
representedandtoincreaseentriesfromyoungpeopleandemergingtranslators.Tothatend,we also
added a new category of commendations for first-time adult entrants.

The2020prizesawthereturnofthe'Spotlight'strand,arotatingfocusonacommunitylanguage which
waslaunchedin2018.Polishwasthefocusin2020,withcashprizesandcommendationsinthree youth
categories:18-and-under,14-and-underand10-and-under.Inrecentyearswehavebeendeveloping a
bank of virtualresourcesto encouragepeople of all ages to engage in poetrytranslation,and this became a
particularfocusduringthepandemic.Asoutlinedbelow[seepointa),VirtualCreativeTranslation, we
workedwithtranslators,poetsandteachersacrosstheworldtocurateresourcesandactivities that
broughtcreativetranslationtopeopleofallages,wherevertheywere.DirectoroftheTrust Charlotte
Rylanddescribedinherintroductiontotheprizebooklethowtheprizehadadaptedtolifeduring the
pandemic:'wewereabletotransformtheprizeintoavirtualprogrammethatbroughtthejoyof poetry
translationtoisolatedyoungpeopleandadults.Throughvideomasterclassesandliveillustration, remote
workshopsandlessonplans,webeamedinternationalpoetryintovirtualclassroomsandinto homes,
ensuringthatthisborder-crossing,collaborativeactivitycouldbesharedbyasmanypeopleas possible.'
FeedbackfromKatrinaBarnes,anMFLteacheratCombertonVillageCollege,highlightedthe particular
value of the prize to schoolsamidstthe challengesof lockdown:'The StephenSpenderPrize could not have
arrivedatabettertime.Aswelanguageteachersdevoteourselvestosearchingfornewwaysto engage
our studentsfromafar, I am thrilledto be gettingmy studentsinvolvedin a creativeactivitywhich will  take
themto the heartof what it meansto communicatebetweendifferentlanguages.Now morethan ever, at
atimewhenotherculturesmaybelessaccessiblephysically,poetrytranslationhasthepowerto guide
students into other worlds, lives, and experiences.'

Entriesto the prizedoubledin 2020,with1,000youngpeopleand over300adultstranslatingpoems from
80languages.Thevastmajorityofentrieswerein the14-and-undercategory,reflectingourfocuson that
age group. To build on this momentum,at the beginningof 2021 we introducedteacherregistrationfor the
prize, ensuringthat we could supportteacherswith resourcesand activities,and give targetedhelp to  state
schools.

AcclaimedpoetDaljitNagra,judgingtheprizeforthefirsttimein2020,paidtributetothe 'exceptionally
highstandard'ofentriesduringthisyearofchange.Heapplaudedhowmanyofthetranslations'felt as
thoughtheyhad,alwaysandonly,beenwritteninEnglish,suchwasthequalityofthetranslators'way of
transformingpoemsfromonelanguageintoanother.'Thesesentimentswereechoedbyfellowpoet and
returningjudge,MaryJean Chan,who affirmedthat'the judgeswereonceagaintreatedto submissions of
thehighestqualityfromacrossourtranslationcategoriesthisyear'.Aswellastheimmediately familiar
WesternEuropeanlanguages,the winningand commendedentriesincludedTamil,Bangla,Chinese, Cuban
Spanish,UruguayanSpanish,TaiwaneseMandarin,Irish,JapaneseandBrazilianPortuguese.Inher first
yearonthejudgingpanel,poetandtranslatorKhairaniBarokkareflectedonthe'treat'ofjudging entries
from so many languages.

Aftermuchcarefuldeliberation,judgesKhairaniBarokka,MaryJeanChan,DaljitNagraand Antonia
Lloyd-Jones(forthePolishSpotlightentries)chosetheirwinnersandcommendedentriesacross the
categories.

Thewinnerofthe14-and-undercategorywasHannahKripaJordan,forhertranslationfromTamilof 'And
Yet-OurTamilLife'byManushyaPuthiran.Thetranslationwaspraisedbythejudgesas'bothfunny and
moving',standingas 'a poemfull of wisdomfor our difficulttimes'.Secondprizewent to GraceWu for her
'fresh and vivid'renditionof 'muse of the moon'by classicalChinesepoet Li Bai, and third to  Caroline-Olivia
Edwardsfor'VersosSencillos,VersoIII'byJoseMarti,translatedfromCubanSpanish.Commendations in
this category went to Vishal Saha (Uruguayan Spanish), Maddie Stoll (Chinese) and Omar Ullah (Bangla).

Theinauguraleditionofthe16-and-undercategorywaswonbyMeganTurtleforhertranslation from
Russianof'Donotleaveyourroom'byJosephBrodsky.MaryJeanChanremarkedonhowthe poem
'speaksdirectlytoourcurrentpredicamentamidstCOVID-19,withitscleveruseofbitingsatire expertly
translatedinto English'.Second place went to Alessandrod'Attanasio,for his 'tenderlytranslated' rendering
of 'Saturdayin thevillage'by ItalianpoetGiacomoLeopardi,and thirdwenttoAliceGarciaKalmusfor the
evocative'Iwriteagainstanopenwindow'byMarioQuintana,translatedfromBrazilian Portuguese.
CommendationswereawardedtoMatildaStepekfor'Passionsof a GhostlyFury'by Ovid(fromLatin) and
to Gabriela O'Keeffe for an extract from 'Tears for America' by Michael Davitt (from Irish).

Inthe18-and-undercategory,firstprizewenttoMaryamZaidiforherupliftingtranslationfromItalian of
'TheLemons'byEugenioMontale,whichwascommendedbythejudgesfor'itslyricsensibilityand ability
toinspirehope'.SecondprizewenttoOliviaFlintforhertranslationfromMexicanSpanishof 'The
Schoolchildren'by PedroSerrano,and third to Isobel Birkelandfor 'Writingrhymeswith Sir Ishii' by Chinese
poetQiu Jin (Chinese).Commendationsin thiscategorywenttoVassilGilbert(Japanese),Jasper Maughan
(German) and Cosima Deetman (also German).

ThewinneroftheOpencategorywasStuartLyonsforhisplayfulrenditionof'WildWestCambridge at
Dusk'by Xu Zhimo.MaryJeanChanpaidparticulartributeto the translator'suse of syntax,whichshe said
allowedthe Englishversionto 'takeon a life of its own'.Secondplacewas awardedto Marta Ciechanowicz
for'TheJoyofWriting'byWislawaSzymborska,whichjudgeKhairaniBarokkadescribedas'ajourney of
gratitudeforthewrittenword,keenlytranslatedfromPolish'.BenFergusontookthirdprizefor'dust' by
NadjaKüchenmeister,translatedfromGerman.CommendationsintheOpencategorywentto Oliver
Fallon(Sanskrit),PeterFrankopan(Russian)andChristopherMacDonald(TaiwaneseMandarin), with
additionalcommendationsfor FionaGarratt,LornaAmorand MarkGraingerin the new first-time-entrants
category.

In the PolishSpotlightsectiontherewas no 'Open'(adult)section;instead,the eldestage groupwas set at
18-and-under,with furtherwinnersand commendationsin the 14-and-underand 10-and-under categories.
TheyoungestSpotlightwinnerwasfive-year-oldAaronFerguson,forhislivelytranslationof'Fromdog to
dogfleabobs'by ZbigniewMachej,whileAlexanderFletchertookfirstplacein the14-and-under category
forhis'veryimpressive'versionof'OpposingWinds'byTomaszRozycki.The18-and-underwinner was
HannaKisiala,whosetranslationofBronislawMaj's'Homecoming'waspraisedbyjudge Antonia
Lloyd-Jonesforits'greatempathyandskill'.TheSpotlightsectionsawcommendationsfor Maximilian
Hempler(10-and-under)and MichaelaKonkolewska-Grybe(14-and-under),as well as for Skye Slatcher and
Patrick Lynch in the 18-and-under category.

Inherassessmentofthisyear'sSpotlightentriesoverall,judgeAntoniaLloyd-Joneslaidemphasison the
'literarytalentandimagination'oftheyoungcontestants,affirmingthat'thereareplentyof encouraging
signs here for the future of Polish poetry in English translation' as the Spotlight turns to Urdu for 2021.

Asever,theannualprizecycleculminatedinthepublicationofaprintandonlinebookletofthe winners'
translationsandjudges'commentaries.However,forthefirsttimetheawardseventwasheld virtually,
witha livestreamonSST'sYouTubechannel.Thisnewformatenabledtheawardstoreacha much larger
andwideraudiencethanusual,withhundredswatchingtheeventonYouTubebothliveand recorded,
from every continent.

`Education Programmes`

2020-21wasatimeofgreatchangeandprogressforSST'seducationwork.Withthesupportof the
RothschildFoundation,PolonskyFoundation,DerekHillFoundation,JohnSCohenTrust,othertrusts and
foundationsand Arts CouncilEngland,we have been able to increaseour reach,developnew programmes,
and expandtheteamthatdeliversall of ourwork.We havealsodevelopedan ambitiousnewstrategy for
2022-24,whichwillseeusreachmoreyoungpeoplethaneverbefore,embeddingcreativetranslation in
schools across the UK.

Ourflagshipeducationproject,CreativeTranslationintheClassroom,continuedin2020-21,taking full
advantageofvirtualplatformsandtoolsinordertoreachyoungpeopleacrossBuckinghamshire and
Oxfordshire.Inaddition,SSTlaunchedanewnationalprojecton'VirtualCreativeTranslation', developing
digitalresourcesandactivities,developedanewschoolsprojectwithPopUpProjectsCIC, and
strengthened our partnership with the Queen's College Translation Exchange.

`(a) Virtual Creative Translation`

WithfundingfromArtsCouncilEngland,fromMaytoSeptember2020wedevelopedarangeof virtual
'creativetranslation'resourcestoenableyoungpeopletointeractinnewanddynamicways with
internationalliterature,asbothacomplementandadditiontoourannualpoetryprizeand CTiC
programmes.Ourvirtualresourcesreachedyoungpeopleintheirhomes,enablingthemtorealise their
creativepotentialandtoengagewithhigh-qualityinternationalculturewhileschoolswereclosed and
socialisolationextreme.Alloftheresourceswerepublishedonournewresourceshuband YouTube
channel, and form a strong foundation for our future development.

Aspartofthisvirtualoffering,wecommissionedpoetsandtranslatorsfromacrosstheworldto curate
virtualbookletsofpoetryin14(mostlynon-European)languages,andwedevelopedthree innovative
audio-visualprojectsfor young people:'PicturingPoetry','Poemsfrom Home'and 'Listento the Music'. We
alsoworkedwithfourfreelancetranslatorsandseveralinternationalpartnerstocurateadatabaseof 37
children'sbooksandgraphicnovelsintenlanguages,togetherwithclassroomresources.This database
provides educators with tools and activities for multilingual creative learning.

Ourvirtualpoetrybookletsandresourcesenabledmultilingualchildrentoengagecreativelywith their
languagesandtosharethemwithfriendsandfamily.Theseresourcesenhancedouryoung participants'
culturalcapital,regardlessofsocio-economiccontextorgeographicallocation.Inthisway,we increased
anddiversifiedourreachconsiderably:inMay-August2020ournewvideoswereviewed6,245times and
the new resources accessed 8,100 times.

TheArtsCouncilfundingalsoenabledustodevelopexistingpartnershipswithinternationaland UK
organisationsand to establishnew links (e.g. UAE publisherKalamat,UK-basedWorldKidLit),as well as  new
collaborationswithindividuals,in particularwomenof Blackand minorityethnicbackgrounds(e.g. writers
MohiniGupta,KavitaBhanotand SaschaAuroraAkhtar).Theseand the databaseof virtualresources have
put us on an excellentfootingfor new collaborativeprojects,extendedinternationalliteraryexchange, and
made our work more environmentally sustainable.

Inautumn2020'VirtualCreativeTranslation'wasfurthersupportedbyagrantfromthe Rothschild
Foundationfor trainingin virtualfacilitation.This enabledthe SST teamto attendtrainingcoursesin  virtual
management and facilitation, and to plan training for our creative practitioners for the following year.

`(b) Creative Translation in the Classroom`

CreativeTranslationintheClassroom(CTiC)waslaunchedin2019withfundingfromthe Rothschild
Foundation and Polonsky Foundation. The focus for the three-year programme (2019-2022) is on:

 - bringing translators into schools for workshops and projects

 - training teachers in creative translation pedagogy

developing teaching resources to be used across the curriculum.

Ineachyearoftheprogramme,professionaltranslatorspartnerwithteachersatprimary,secondary and
supplementaryschoolsto delivercreativetranslationworkshopsand projectsto pupilsin Key Stages2  and
3.Theworkshopsofferaninitialintroductiontotranslation,withactivitiesbasedontranslating comics,
picturebooks,plays,poems,rap,filmand more.The longer-termprojectsenableteachersto engage their
pupils in poetry translation and the Stephen Spender Prize.

Thetranslators,teachersandstudentsworkwitharangeoflanguages,buteachyearone translator
focusesona'spotlight'language:Polishin2019-20,Urduin2020-21,andRomanianin2021-22. The
StephenSpenderPrizealsoincludesdedicatedstrandsforthisspotlightlanguage,andtheprizeitself is
beingdevelopedoverthesethreeyearsintoamoreinclusive,accessibleanddynamicactivityfor young
people of all backgrounds.

InApril2020theprojectshiftedfromin-persontovirtualengagementasaresultofthepandemic. Our
teamoftranslatorsdevelopedvirtualresourcesandactivities,andsupportedtheirpartnerteachers to
engagetheirpupils (oftenremotely)in creativetranslationand in the StephenSpenderPrize.We launched
anewvirtualresourceshub(multilingualcreativity.org.uk)andYouTubechannel.Thisongoingwork on
virtualresources,whichwillultimatelybe housedonthenewSSTwebsite,is keytothelegacyof Creative
Translationin the Classroom(CTiC),as it ensuresthat all participatingteacherswill have accessto a bank  of
tried-and-tested resources which they can use, adapt and integrate into their teaching for years to come.

A seriesof reflectionsessionsin June 2020,led by our independentevaluatorMilla Gregorand involving all
partnerteachers,translatorsand traineeteachers,producedextremelyusefullearningwhichinformed the
followingyearoftheproject.Asaresult,thefocusofYear2(September2020onwards)shifted to
resourcingandsupportingteacherstointegratecreativetranslationactivitiesintotheirregular teaching
practice.

Insummer2020weselectedthreenewtranslatorstoparticipateintheproject,joiningexisting team
membersRahulBeryandRuthAhmedzaiKemp.LauraBennett'sexperienceoftranslating footballers'
biographiesmet a welcomereceptionwith many teenageparticipantsin her French translation workshops;
whileUrduSpotlightcuratorsSaschaAuroraAkhtarandCherylMoskowitzfocusedonprimary-age pupils.
WithtranslatorSarahArdizzoneandeducationconsultantKatrinaBarnes,wedevelopedandrana virtual
inductionandtrainingprogrammeforourtranslator-facilitators,whowerethenpartneredwith teachers
fromprimaryandsecondaryschoolsinBuckinghamshireandOxfordshiretoco-developand -deliver
workshops and projects.

In autumnterm2020thetranslatorsdesigned'seasonalactivities',creatingvideoandaudioactivities that
weredelivereddirectlybyteachersin theirclassrooms.Followingthisintroductiontocreative translation,
thetranslatorsthendevelopedafullworkshopfordeliveryinthespringtermof2021.These included
videos,PowerPointsandworksheetsmadebythetranslators,andweredeliveredbyteachersusing the
Padletdigitalplatform.Springterm2021alsosawthelaunchofanew'remotestrand'of Creative
Translationin the Classroom:a seriesof threewebinarsto introduceteachersacrossBuckinghamshire and
Oxfordshire to creative translation.

Participatingteachersandyoungpeoplerespondedverypositivelytotheprogramme,highlighting the
inclusive and motivational impact of creative translation, as well as its support of reading and writing skills:

"ThetrainingfromStephenSpenderTrustgavemetheconfidencetotryoutpoetrytranslationwith my
pupils,andtheimpactonmypupils-90%ofwhomspeakalanguageotherthanEnglishathome- was
amazing.This partnershipis enablingus to developa rich literacycurriculumfor the schoolthat reflects the
needs and interests of our pupils, and includes everyone."

"M.(whoyoupraisedforhiscopyingoftheUrduscript)is currentlyworkingatreceptionlevelin literacy.
Hecan'treadorwriteindependently,butwhenyoushowedhimhisnameinUrdu-hewassmiling from
ear to ear! The others were so eager to show their great work."

"Allthechildren,includinglowerabilitychildren,havebeenengagedinthetranslationworkshops. These
workshopshavehelpeddemonstrateapurposetolanguagelearningandtranslatingthatmaybe doesn't
come across as well during regular language lessons."

(c) Multilingual Festival of Children's Literature with Pop Up Projects CIC

InMarch2020longstandingdiscussionswithPopUpProjectsCICcametofruitionwithapartnership to
developandrunaMultilingualFestivalofChildren'sLiteratureinLondonschools.Thisproject was
conceivedasasmall-scalepilot,withaviewtorollingitoutinmoreschoolsandotherregions in
subsequentyears.SST's role in the projectis primarilyto programmebooks,authorsand translators, which
enabled us to make new connectionswith severalpublishers,authorsand translatorsin the UK and  abroad,
andtobegintodevelopadatabaseofbooksthatarewellsuitedtocreativetranslation workshops.
However,giventhattheprojectreliesheavilyoninternationaltravelandin-schoolevents,delivery was
delayed by the pandemic and did not begin during before spring 2021.

SSTcontinuedtopartnerwiththenewOxford-basedQueen'sCollegeTranslationExchange(QTE)as it
developeditsoutreachprogramme,traininguniversitystudentstodesignanddelivercreative translation
workshopsin primaryand secondaryschools('CreativeTranslationAmbassadors').It also supportedQTE  to
develop a translation prize for schools, the Anthea Bell Prize for Young Translators.

`FINANCIAL REVIEW`

`Principal funding sources`

Thecharityhasreceiveddonationsandgrantsamountingto£90,977duringtheyear,including £29,750
fromtheJohnLyonsCharity,£12,500fromthePolonskyFoundation,£9,850fromArtsCouncil England
(EmergencyResponseFund),£25,100fromthe RothschildFoundation,£5,000fromOld Possum's Practical
Trust,£5,000fromthe DerekHill Foundation,£2,000fromthe SacklerTrustand £1,040fromthe Björnson
andProdanFoundation,Thisisadecreaseinfundingfromthepreviousyear,whendonationsand grants
amounted to £101,758.

As at 31 March 2021 the charity had accumulated reserves of £106,445 of which £10,224 are unrestricted.

`Reserves policy`

It is the policyof the charityto hold such funds as necessaryto protectthe future operationsof the charity,
the minimum permissible level of unrestricted reserves being £15,000, in order to

Cover a period of low income while remedial action is taken
Cover an unexpected loss on a project
Cover unforeseen expenditure items
Cover any related costs should the trustees ever seek to merge or wind up the charity

The charitydevelopeda 3 year plan to strengthenreservesand furtherthe charity.The 3 year plan was due
tobeimplementedinApril2020butCoronavirusputthisonhold.Theglobalpandemichasresulted in
increasedspendingoftheunrestrictedreserveswhichattheyearendwerelessthan£15,000.As funding
beginstoreturntopre-pandemiclevels,theunrestrictedreserveswillstrengthenfromnew revenue
streams as well as reviving school partnerships.

`Organisational structure`

Theday-to-dayadministrationwasundertakenbyCharlotteRylandinconsultationwiththechair of
trustees,JonathanHeawood.Thetrusteesmeetfivetimesinthecourseoftheyear,andotherwise fulfil
theirfiduciarydutiesbyemailortelephone.Theyreceiveregularmanagementaccountstoallowthem to
monitorcloselythemanagementoftheTrust'scashresources,andtheyapprovethenextyear's budget
severalmonthsbeforethe beginningof the new financialyear. The Directormeetsthe chair of the  trustees
once a year for an appraisal and professional development review.

`Induction and training of new trustees`

WhennewtrusteesareappointedtheyareprovidedwithabriefhistoryoftheTrust,itsaimsfor the
future,thelatestannualaccountsandtrustees'report,andotherinformationappropriateto their
induction, such as Charity Commission guidance.

`Risk management`

Thetrusteeshaveadutytoidentifyandreviewtheriskstowhichthecharityisexposedandto ensure
appropriatecontrolsareinplacetoprovidereasonableassuranceagainstfraudanderror. Reviewing
annuallythescheduleofrisksandtheproceduresinplacetomitigatetheserisks,thetrustees have
identified the following risks:

- Financial and economic including a shortfall in expected fundraising

- Loss of the Trust's Director

`Basis of preparing the financial statements`

Thefinancialstatementsofthecharitablecompany,whichisapublicbenefitentityunderFRS 102,
havebeenpreparedinaccordancewiththeCharitiesSORP(FRS102)'AccountingandReporting by
Charities:StatementofRecommendedPracticeapplicabletocharitiespreparingtheiraccounts in

`Income`

Incomeconsistsofdonationsreceivedandgrantssecuredbythecharityduringtheyear. These
financialresourcesarerecognisedintheStatementofFinancialActivitiesatthedateinwhich the
charity becomes entitled to receive the funds and the amount can be measured reliably.

`Expenditure`

Liabilitiesarerecognisedasexpenditureassoonasthereisalegalorconstructive obligation
committingthe charityto that expenditure,it is probablethat a transferof economicbenefitswill be
requiredinsettlementandtheamountoftheobligationcanbemeasuredreliably.Expenditure is
accountedforonanaccrualsbasisandhasbeenclassifiedunderheadingsthataggregateall cost
relatedtothecategory.Wherecostscannotbedirectlyattributedtoparticularheadingsthey have
been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources.

`Taxation`

The charity is exempt from corporation tax on its charitable activities.

`Fund accounting`

Unrestrictedfundscanbe usedin accordancewiththecharitableobjectivesat thediscretionof the
trustees.

Restrictedfunds can only be used for particularrestrictedpurposeswithin the objectsof the  charity.
Restrictionsarisewhenspecifiedbythedonororwhenfundsareraisedforparticular restricted
purposes.

Financialassetsandfinancialliabilitiesarerecognisedinthebalancesheetwhenthe charity
becomes a party to the contractual provisions of the instrument.

Tradeandotherdebtorsandcreditorsareclassifiedasbasicfinancialinstrumentsandare initially
measuredatinitialrecognitionattransactionprice.Debtorsandcreditorsare subsequently
measuredat amortisedcostusing the effectiveinterestratemethod.A provisionwill be  established
whenthereisobjectiveevidencethatthecharitywillnotbeabletocollectallamountsdue. Cash
andcashequivalentsareclassifiedasbasicfinancialinstrumentsandcomprisecashatbank and
short-termbank depositswith an originalmaturityof three monthsor less which are an integral part
of the charity's cash management.

Financialliabilitiesissuedbythecharityareclassifiedinaccordancewiththesubstanceof the
contractual arrangements entered into and meet the definitions of a financial liability.

Financial assets are de-recognised when:

the contractual right to the cash flows from the financial asset expire or are settled; or
the charity transfers to another party substantially all of the risks and rewards of ownership of the financial asset; or
the charity, despite having retained some but not all off significant risks and rewards of ownership, has transferred control of the asset to another party.

PolishSpotlight-inNovember2017StephenSpenderTrustwasgrantedinvestmentfunding from
theRothschildFoundationtorunapilotforanewprogrammethatwouldintegratethe Stephen
SpenderPrizeandtheTranslatorsinSchoolseducationprogrammes.Thisprojectcontinues with
further funding from the British Council, the Polish Cultural Institute and the Rothschild Foundation.

CreativeTranslationintheClassroom- CTiCisaneducationprogrammethatembedstranslators in
schools,trainingthemto co-developand deliverworkshopsand projectswithteachersin Key Stage
2 and 3 classroomsacrossBuckinghamshireand Oxfordshire.The programmeis primarilyfunded by
the Rothschild Foundation and the Polonsky Foundation.

LLDCWorkshop- a partnershipbetweenStephenSpenderTrust,the BritishCounciland the London
LegacyDevelopmentCorporation,whichorganized,inAugust2019,ahalf-daycreative translation
workshopaspartoftheBritishCouncil-sponsored'EastSummerSchool',for25youngpeople aged
12-17 in Stratford, East London.

VirtualCreativeTranslation-inMay2020StephenSpenderTrustwasgrantedfundingfrom Arts
CouncilEnglandto developvirtualcreativetranslationactivitiesfor youngpeoplein the UK affected
bythepandemic.Theprojectdevelopsvirtualteachingresourcesandvirtualtrainingfor teachers
and translators,and bringsall theseresourceson toSST'snewwebsite,whichwaslaunchedin  May
2021. The project continues with funding from the Rothschild Foundation and Foyle Foundation.
