Objectives

The relief of poverty, sickness and distress, the advancement of education and the preservation and protection of good health in poor, rural agricultural communities in Malawi, Africa.

About Nyumba Ya Thanzi

We work with Malawians who have ideas about how to improve the lives of people in their country but often lack the resources to put their plans into action. We work with people who are passionate, committed and have realistic workable plans. We particularly look for original ideas inspired by the specific realities of life in Malawi. We encourage creative approaches to solving problems based on an understanding of what can work in Malawi, and give Malawians the opportunity to try out their own ideas.

It is our philosophy that Malawians themselves are in the best position to determine how their problems can be solved, but we realise that they sometimes lack financial resources or the formal education necessary to approach the average donor. We can provide financial assistance, help with managing project money, help writing proposals, networking and encouragement and a forum to thrash out ideas.

A year in projects

Nutrition Centre

Since 2008 Nyumba Ya Thanzi’s has funded the Nyumba Ya Thanzi Nutrition Centre, a community-based orgaisation registered under trustees incorporation act of the laws of Malawi.

The Center is positioned close to Senga Bay primary school and supports vulnerable children in the community, particularly those with HIV.

The nutrition centre opened its doors in February 2008 and has now been supporting children in Senga Bay for over 16 years.

The project started with 25 children and support a large number of children and young adults, and wider members of the community. A group of around 30 children come to the centre on a daily basis from a number of villages in the Senga Bay area. They get a healthy meal and access to health care.

Whenever a child from the centre is sick one of the staff take them and their parent or guardian to the local doctor, paying for their transport and any medicine required.

There is also a pre school and nursery at the centre running since 2018.

The centre is also an outreach point for under-five clinic for growth monitoring, immunisations, and vaccinations which operates once a month.

In 2023 a new vocational skills project was launched to benefit young adult beneficiaries who had been attending Nyumba Ya Thanzi since they were young children. 15 young people undertook a year long vocations skill programme in metal works or tailoring. They are then provided with seed money to set up their own small businesses. The first cohort graduated from this project in 2024, and the second cohort began in 2024.

In 2024 the Centre also contracted for electricity to be supplied to the centre for the first time.

Nyumba Ya Thanzi is run by Doreen who is supported by a number of volunteers. Thomas Ngwira, regional headmaster, and Lawrence Chafuwa, a health care manager at a local hospital oversee the project and report to Nyumba Ya Thanzi in the UK.

Charlotte Atwood

Charlotte first got involved with Nyumba Ya Thanzi in 2008 when she spent time living in Senga Bay, researching the impact of the centre for her Masters dissertation. Her particular focus was the importance of local initiative and cultural sensitivity in development, which was what led her to Nyumba. She was so impressed by the wonderful influence the centre is having and Nyumba's general ethos that she has been volunteering with us in the UK ever since. Charlotte was made a trustee in 2010. Charlotte is a broadcast journalist, working for the BBC. She has spent most of her career so far working as a producer for the African service of the BBC World Service, although she's currently working at BBC Radio 4. Stephen Hooper

Stephen was blown away by the enthusiasm and hard work the trustees were putting in, as well as the positive ethos of helping Malawians to help themselves. Stephen graduated from the University of Southampton in 2002, with a BSc in Politics and Law. He qualified as a solicitor in 2008, and works in central London.
