Families and groups are able to browse and reserve toys online, ready for collection, or play and choose during the toy library session. Our service is available for families with children aged from a few months to early teens, and for groups or individuals involved in providing care for children. Toy libraries are exciting places, lending the best toys and games which adults and children can enjoy together. We have a wide selection of good quality toys, games and resource books for hire, and are happy to offer help and advice about meeting the needs of individual children. We can also advise on which resources would suit group play. Many of our toys are great for children with additional needs, and we also have a large selection of multicultural toys and books. ## **How Much Will It Cost?** Family membership £8 per year Group membership £16 per year There is a weekly fee for each item borrowed. Rates start at 75p per week for books and toys. More expensive toys from £2.00. We make no charge for accidental breakages but do ask for toys to be returned in a clean condition. Members can use either of our toy libraries but do need to return toys to the library they were borrowed from. 3 ## **Spinning Top Toy Library** Spinning Top Toy Library is a branch of Merry Go Round. It first opened in March 2018 in The Beacon Centre in Beacon Heath. In March 2020 it closed due to Covid-19 restrictions and reopened in April 2021. At The Beacon many families choose to stay, chat and play with the toys whilst visiting the toy library. Our Toy Library Manager is Andrea Bristow, who is helped by a Toy Librarian, volunteers and a management committee made up of toy library members. We provide high-quality toys to children aged from a few months to primary age. Some toys are specially designed for children with disabilities; others aim to promote multicultural awareness. Visit my.mgrtoylibrary.org to join the toy libraries, browse the catalogues and book toys to take home. 4 ## **Volunteers and Committee Members** ## **Volunteers** Everyone who helps our charity in a non-paid capacity is counted as a volunteer, including committee members and Friends of Merry Go Round. Volunteers use their specific skills as and when they feel they can. Tasks for volunteers include: - helping with social media and online promotions - helping to design and distribute publicity materials - hosting and managing our websites and email accounts - helping with fundraising and publicity events - mending or cleaning toys - sorting donated toys - organising events and toy sales - taking photos for publicity ## **Committee Members** Committee members are Trustees of the charity and as such ensure the toy libraries are run in accordance with the law and our Constitution. Committee members: - manage the staff, promoting good working practice and conditions - make decisions about the running of the toy libraries, and make sure our charity is meeting its aims and objectives - make a commitment to attend meetings, approximately every 2 months, including the AGM and our summer and winter socials - use their skills to support the toy library – some are officers e.g. Chair, Treasurer or Secretary, each of whom has their own responsibilities - help with publicity - link in with everything else going on in the project such as fundraising For more information, please call in on us during toy library sessions, email coordinator@mgrtoylibrary.org or take a look at our website www.mgrtoylibrary.org. This involves applying for a DBS and character references._ 5 ## **Chair’s Report for the 2025 AGM** It’s been a year of big changes and new beginnings for Merry Go Round Toy Library. At the end of 2024, we received the news that our lease at Exeter Scrapstore would not be renewed in the spring. After 25 years in that location, we suddenly found ourselves facing the challenge of finding a new home for the Toy Library — a daunting task, but one we approached with determination and hope. We are incredibly grateful for the support we received from local Councillors and toy library members, who shared contacts and suggestions for potential new venues. In the busy lead-up to Christmas, we viewed many spaces across Exeter. However, many lacked the essential storage capacity for our toys or a welcoming area for families to stay and play. Positive Light Projects stood out immediately. They worked closely with us to create a space that met our needs — both for toy storage and for hosting our sessions. Huge thanks to Brendan Barry and George Barron, Directors at Positive Light Projects, for their generosity, flexibility, and warm welcome. Since the move, Merry Go Round Toy Library has been busier than ever! In recent years, we’ve loved taking part in the Princesshay Charity Christmas Tree Festival. Last Christmas, our members had great fun colouring in ‘Merry Go Rounds’ to decorate our tree. After such an eventful year, we’ll be taking a break from tree decorating this Christmas, but we look forward to returning in 2026. At our last Annual General Meeting, we were delighted to welcome Faye Winsor to the committee. We always enjoy social events, though it can be tricky to find a time that suits everyone. Once again, our Christmas party took place in January — this time we tried something new and enjoyed a lovely brunch at Browns. The Exeter Respect Festival was a particularly wet one this year, with torrential rain on Saturday. Thankfully, Sunday brought brighter skies. Our stall was in the children’s area, where we offered circus skills and a play dough table. Despite the weather, great fun was had by all. As we look ahead, I’d like to wish the new committee, and everyone involved with Merry Go Round Toy Libraries continued success in the year to come — and for many years into the future. ## **Alex Allen (Chair)** 6 ## **Toy Library Co-ordinator’s Report for the 2025 AGM** It’s been an incredibly busy and exciting year for Merry Go Round Toy Libraries! Our relocation in May 2025, though initially daunting, has brought many positives. Brendan and George, Directors of Positive Light Projects, have been wonderfully welcoming and went above and beyond to help us settle in. A huge thank you to Brendan, who stepped in at the last minute to install shelving in our new toy storage area — a mammoth task that made a big difference. We’re also grateful to Cllr Matthew Vizard for funding the purchase of play mats and updated publicity materials featuring our new address. Since the move, our more central location has significantly increased our visibility, and we’ve been delighted to welcome many new members. The new premises are far more accessible, with excellent public transport links right on our doorstep. Many families now pop in after visiting Exeter Library or before heading to St Sidwell’s pool — it’s wonderful to be part of their day. We’ve experienced some of our busiest months ever, with more toys going out on loan than before. It’s been heartening to see a growing number of families accessing the service and making the most of the opportunity to stay and play — something that was very limited at our previous site. Our staff and trustees are thrilled to see families enjoying the space, building new connections, and borrowing more toys than ever. At Spinning Top, we now have a comfortable area where families can stay and play with toy library toys. It’s been a joy to see so many parents and carers engaging with their children, chatting with staff, and connecting with other families. Of course, with frequent use, our toys do begin to show signs of wear and tear. We’re incredibly thankful to Cllr Thomas Richardson for funding the replacement of some of our most loved and well-used toys. Thanks to his support, we’ve also added a selection of exciting new toys based on suggestions from our members! We’re always grateful for the generous donations of outgrown toys from local families. Some are added to our collection, while others are used for fundraising sales. Our volunteers work tirelessly to sort, clean, package, and price these items. Joe, a student from Colyton Grammar School, joined us for a few months to support his Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award — his help was invaluable in preparing for the Exeter Respect Festival. Recently, our trustee Joy and I sorted through a large donation of books, which allowed us to hold a fundraising book sale at Positive Light Projects. We love taking part in fundraising events, and this year has been no exception. Highlights include the Christmas Fayre at The Beacon (always a 7 favourite), a pop-up toy sale at Exeter Scrapstore before our move, and a collection day at Morrison’s to raise awareness of the toy library. In June, we were invited by Helen Potter to host a stall at Pinhoe School Summer Fayre, where we offered circus-style activities that were a big hit with families. We also held a pop-up play session at Sylvania Stores — thank you to Helen Everitt for the invitation. I organised a craft activity over Easter at a Beacon Fun day and our cover staff member, Kerri Henderson, also ran a fantastic junk modelling activity at one of The Beacon’s fun days over the Summer. None of this would be possible without our incredible committee and volunteers. It’s always a pleasure and a privilege to work alongside such dedicated and enthusiastic people. Your time, energy, and commitment mean the world to us — thank you for everything you do! ## **Andrea Bristow (Toy Library Co-ordinator/Manager)** 8 ## **Treasurer’s Report for the 2025 AGM** ## **Financial Statement (all figures rounded to nearest pound)** At the end of October 2025, Merry Go Round had a total of £9,289 and Spinning Top had a total of £7,689. The contingency account has a balance of £4,384, being monies designated to cover redundancy payments in the event the toy libraries have to close, plus statutory costs for sick pay should this be required. ## **Annual Accounts** The annual accounts for the period 1st April 2024 to 31st March 2025 were inspected by the Treasurer to check that proper accounting records had been kept and the accounts agreed with the accounting records. In addition, the accounts were independently examined to ensure our accounting records and annual accounts are supported by the records and accurately reflect the charity’s financial affairs. We would like to thank Exeter Community Accounting, our payroll provider, for their help and advice. We would also like to thank Di Wilkins for independently examining the accounts. A copy of the statement of accounts is available for anyone who would like to look at it; these accounts will soon be available to view on the Charity Commission website. Our total income for last year was £37, 229 with an expenditure of £27,571, showing a surplus of £9657. This surplus is the result of a 24-month grant from National Lottery Awards for All. The funds are restricted for use towards Spinning Top Toy Library’s rent and staff salaries during the 2025–2026 financial year. It is therefore not possible to differentiate membership numbers between the two libraries. During the period 1[st] October 2024–30[th] September 2025, the toy library had 133 members either renew their membership or join. Members were mainly families, with 5 group memberships. Monitoring information shows this represented approximately 750 children aged from a few weeks up to 12 years old. We can see from the graphs below that the number of members joining the toy library between 1[st] October 2024 and 30[th] September 2025 is around average. We believe the peak in 2021–2022 is due to more families staying close to home during the school holiday periods following the easing of Covid restrictions. We do make members and potential members aware that a family member or friend is able to collect and return toys on their behalf. We want our service to be as accessible to as many families as possible. To ensure our service reaches families who need it most, we offer Free Membership and Toy Hire vouchers to trusted community builders and church family workers in Exeter. These partners help us identify and support families who would benefit from the toy library but may find membership and hire fees a challenge. **----- Start of picture text -----**

10 ## **Number of Visits to the Toy Library and Toy Hires** Merry Go Round and Spinning Top toy libraries each open once a week throughout the year, except on Good Friday and the Christmas holidays. Between 1 October 2023 and 30 September 2024, we recorded 695 visits — defined as bookings or collections — not including returns, play sessions, or general enquiries. We believe this rise in visits reflects the growing popularity of our ‘stay and play’ sessions at Merry Go Round Toy Library, now made possible by our larger venue. Families often choose to play first, then borrow toys they’ve enjoyed during the session. **----- Start of picture text -----**

During visits members borrowed 1,732 toys during the period 1[st] October 2023–30[th] September 2024, compared to 1,586 in the same period the previous year. Each toy hire is calculated for a 2- week loan period, and if a toy is out for 4 weeks it is recorded as 2 hires (2 lots of 2 weeks). Toy hire continues to grow year on year, demonstrating that our service remains popular, accessible, and well-used by the local community. The graph below shows a month-by-month breakdown of toy hire. Since our relocation in May, each month has seen a record number of toys loaned out — a clear sign that the new space is helping us reach more families. **----- Start of picture text -----**

11 ## **Monitoring Information** Over the last 12 months we asked family members to fill in monitoring forms. 76 families representing 285 children completed the forms. Group membership has been used over the past year to support schools and events where many children are present. For analysis purposes we are only able to use information collected from family membership forms as groups were only able to provide partial information on ages, ethnicities and additional needs. Not all families with membership completed monitoring forms. Analysing completed family membership forms, we can see that of those using our service, 43% were of school age, 49% were of nursery/preschool age and 8% were under 13 months old. Merry Go Round is open until 4.30pm on a Tuesday and several families visit us between 3.30– 4.30pm on their way home to choose toys. Both toy libraries are open during the school holidays, with the exception of Christmas and Good Friday, which allows school-age children further opportunity to visit us. We regularly visit local baby and toddler groups to help new families discover the service we offer. Our members also play a key role in spreading the word, often recommending the toy library to friends and others in the community. This word-of-mouth approach continues to be one of our most effective ways of reaching new families. **----- Start of picture text -----**

This information is useful to inform us which types of toys to stock. Many toy libraries only cater for preschool-aged children whilst we provide for children of all ages. ## **Ethnicity Information** From our sample of family memberships, 28 children (8%) are from non–White British ethnic backgrounds. This figure excludes group memberships and families who chose not to share ethnicity information. We’re also aware that some families with English as a second language did not have complete forms. Alongside this, we’re currently making arrangements to loan toys to refugee families staying in a local hotel, helping ensure that all children can access play opportunities regardless of background or circumstance. The first language of parents/carers includes French, Dutch, Portuguese, Ukrainian, Italian, German, Mandarin, Spanish and Persian. Once again, this year we see a different range of first languages, which is a reflection of the transient diversity within Exeter and the need for a toy library service to 12 support people who are new to the area. We will continue to make outreach visits over the coming year to let more people know about the toy library service. ## **Health and Social Needs** We found that children had a range of additional needs including autism, language delay, global delays, Down’s Syndrome, genetic disorders and ADHD. Families have been referred to us by the Honeylands Specialist Childrens Centre in order for children to access specific sensory toys to support their early years complex needs. These toys, which are too expensive for most families to be able to purchase, are often borrowed for several months at a time. Inspire Wellbeing, a local company working with young people with autism and intellectual disability, currently use the toy library service to support their work with particular families. In addition, a local Special Educational Needs school borrows our toys to support its work with a group of children with autism. ## **Andrea Bristow (Toy Library Co-ordinator/Manager)** 13 ## **Members’ Feedback Report 2025** During August and September 2025, our members were asked to fill in feedback forms when they visited the toy libraries to find out in what ways, if any, children and families were benefiting from using the toy libraries. We also wanted to hear any ideas for making things even better. A total of 30 forms were completed by families, representing 69 children who have borrowed and played with our toys. The children’s ages ranged from a few months to 12 years. An overwhelming 100% told us that using the toy libraries had helped them find toys which were right for their child’s interest and level of development, with 100% saying these had helped their child gain new skills or promoted their development. - _An excellent selection and a great way for children to_ - _experiment with different toys_ - _We can have variety without spending lots of money or having_ - _lots of stuff_ - _Fantastic resource to help our child developmentally_ 83% of parents/carers had gained more knowledge of how their children played at different ages and stages, with 77% saying borrowing our toys had increased the amount of interaction between them and their child. 90% of our members tell us they have borrowed toys they wouldn’t normally have been able to afford to buy or have space in their homes to store. It is our aim to ensure that all children are able to play and have fun regardless of financial background. - _In this financial climate the toy library is a life saver_ - _I’m so relieved this service exists_ 97% of members now bought fewer toys, which is better for the environment, ensuring toys are kept in circulation. Many members have informed us that they really enjoy using the toy library for its eco-credentials. - _Fantastic resource to reduce the amount of plastic waste_ - _Great system, has really made me think and not overconsume_ All members who completed our annual feedback survey (100%) said they had benefited from talking to staff. We maintain regular contact with families — in person when they collect, choose, or return toys, and through email and social media. With more space now available at both Merry Go Round and Spinning Top, most families choose to stay, play, and chat. This creates valuable opportunities for staff to build relationships and get to know individual parents, carers, and children. - _Love the new space and opportunity to play_ - _Love the toy library, so welcoming and even if we don’t rent anything we feel super comfortable to just come and play_ 14 - _It is a welcoming and safe space to meet up in and I have made friends_ - _I love the fact that there is a stay and play throughout the holidays as so many toddler groups close in the holidays_ - _The new location and stay and play is ideal, it has helped me engage all 3 boys in the toy library over the Summer holidays_ 83% of our members told us that the online booking service is easy to use. A further 14% were unsure how their members found the website, largely because many families now prefer to seek toy recommendations during their visit. In these cases, staff members support them in choosing suitable toys and complete the booking on their behalf. Feedback this year has indicated that members would like a 'wish list' on the website so that users can save items they want to borrow in the future. Unfortunately, there are some limitations as to what the system can do but this information has been fed back to Lend Engine. Overall, Lend Engine provides a fantastic non-profit service to our toy library. Our staff are on hand to provide online assistance for those who need it. We do always act on suggestions for improvements where we can. Suggestions on the feedback forms included being open on more days. Whilst we would love to extend our opening hours, current finances mean this is not possible. We will continue to review this regularly and explore funding opportunities, so that if circumstances change, we can consider opening more often in the future. In the meantime, we remain committed to making the days we are open as welcoming and valuable as possible. The feedback provided by our members is always helpful for making improvements. The annual feedback this year gives us confidence that we are meeting our aims and objectives: providing quality toys to local children; helping their development through play and having fun; and giving advice and support to parents/carers as needed.
