Masham Sports Association:
Trustees Report for year ending 31/12/2023
Masham Sports Association had another reasonable year in 2023. The three key sports offered to the people within Mashamshire and the surrounding area were cricket, tennis and bowls. It is also pleasing to report that a Masham Boules club was established during 2023, a hard core court was constructed and a membership of 15 people now play regularly in the summer months.
The cricket section were pleased to continue the opportunity for ladies to play cricket and held several fixtures and are gaining more players and enthusiasm. They had a first eleven cricket team in Division One of the Nidderdale Amateur Cricket League and they again had a combined second eleven team with Middleham Cricket Club that maintained their position in Division Six of the Nidderdale Cricket League at the end of the 2023 season. They also participated in the Wensleydale Evening League and had junior teams in the Hambleton League.
The tennis section in 2023 saw membership levels remain very close to the 2021 record numbers. Each year the club invests in its future by subsidising a professional coach at Adult, Intermediate and Junior levels. Although the numbers were slightly down from the 2021 record year, these sessions remain a very popular and successful part of the club’s annual programme of events. Social Tennis sessions are played on Wednesday evenings, Thursday afternoons and Sunday mornings. These sessions remain the backbone of the club. The Annual Club Doubles Tournament and Singles Handicap Event remain firmly established and are now organised for both Adults and Intermediates. Both events were held in 2023. The club is affiliated to the Harrogate and District League, which allows club members to enter competitions and keeps our club in touch with the local LTA organisation. The tennis club undertook some improvements and a clean-up of their courts at a cost in excess of £7,000.
The bowls section had 25 members in 2023. The bowls club played in both the JSW and the Bateson Leagues, both home and away in 2023. The team ended the season in the bottom half of both leagues. The bowls club required a new mower to cut their green and managed to fund this from a donations and grant from North Yorkshire County Council.
Receipts during the year were slightly lower than in 2022 but only by £514, this was entirely due to lower room hire fees and reduced bar takings. Expenditure was slightly higher than in 2022 but only by £453, fundamentally due to the improvements to the tennis courts. Monetary assets at the yearend of £49,128 ensures that the Masham Sports Association is in a good position moving into 2024
