IDASV) and delIve￿r￿j pmjects in West Cornwall for over 35 years.
WCWAID estab115hed in 1987 by a group of women In the community who initially ran a helpline in
Penzance. A need for somewhere safe tor women to flee to Wès Identlhed, and In 1992 WCWAID acqvlred and
opened the htst refuge bulldSng. A secontl refuge property wa5 acquSred In 1995. WCWAID ran accommDtfate
up to 11 women and 16 ¢hil¢ren within its refuge provlslon, whlch & a VK-wlde resource.
The Communlty serv1￿$ Project was established in 2001 to support women and children Ilvin9 in West
Cornwall and the Isle5 of Scllly whose Ilves have been affected by DASV. WCWAID provide5 Helpline. Outreach,
Counselling and Gmup Work Progrnmrne5. Volunteers play a cruclal role In delivertng these vltsl cornmunlty
servlces.
It Is well-documented that where women and thlldren are forced to flee the cwnty this setves to compound
thelr difficultles

A refvge Serv1￿ for women and children who are at hlgh ￿sk from domesUc abuse Is a key component of
WCWAID'S service provision. WCWAfD workers work wlth women to develop tallored support plans that are
Individualised and focused on increasing the woman's safety and $upportlng them to ￿CoVer from trautna. We
aim to improve well-belng and an understandlng of the dynamits Of domestic abuse. We conilnue to provlde
Refuge accommodatlon for up to 11 ¥yomen and 16 chlldren and a resettlernent progrzrnrne for women and
chlldren artsrthey leave the refuge.

Volunteers have always been ¢rucl)I to the dellvery of WCWAID'S seryice$ for women and their th[1d￿n, and
this has continued to be the tase thi5 year. The volunteer programff￿ has seen volunteers supporknng many of
WCWAID services, staffing the helpllne, delivering outreach sesslons In the community, supportlng at refuge,
supportlng groups such as craft group and trauma Infomied yoga, and also speoalitt or bespoke setvices such
as the speclallst houslng advlce and support dlnic that is dellvered by a volunteer. Several of the tralnee and
trained counsellors also (lo this in a voluntary capacity. Our comprehensive volunteering programme this year
induded mentoring* shadowlng and extenslve tralning that Sncludes UnderstandlThJ and Recognlsing Domestic

Actlvltles and Achlevements
Thls year saw a number of developments across the or9anlsatlon.
In response to growlng need and the cost of Ilvlng crfsls, Communlty Servkes expanded to IncI￿]e a Financbl
Support Projert. A dedlcated speclallst finan￿ worker supports women wlth budgeting J debt and other flnanclal
literary issues. This is a pilot proje¢ and we are evaluating the effe¢bvene$5 of havlng thls type of speciallst
support and advice dellvered Inhouse by a worker with eXten￿ve knowled9e and understan(ling of domestlc
abuse and se)rual vlolence [￿ueS.
Trls year we began dellverfng The Power to Change, a psychD-educ3tk*nal programme developed by
international domestic abuse experts and promoted by natK)nal Women's Aid. Two of our team have
Pa￿cIPated In extemal trainlng to deliver the programme. whjch builds self-esteem and empowerment,
enabllng women to recognise Indivldual strengths, maintaln Independence, and acknowledge thelr rlghts tLI
respe¢r, dlgnw, Independence, cholce and control. The programme has been so successhjl that It requlred a
waltlng Ilst and additional dates adde¢ to try to meet demand.
WCWAID wo5 assessed by Women's Aid FederatiDn of England a[￿ achieved Level l accredltation in the
Women'5 Ald Natlonal Quallty Stsndards, whlth ￿cOgnISeS a consistent quality ol delivery for all operauonal
aspects of the charlty. These procedures are peritsdlolly revlewed to ensure that they contlnue to meet the
needs of the Cha￿ty.
Th55 year we contlnued to make progress in term5 of raising tsur profile and local awareness. We were a
partner for the thlrd year runnlng In'16 Day5 of AcU()n', o 5erles of evÈnts in Penzance h￿hlIghtIng the Issue of
vlolence agaSnst gir& and w¢Jmen. The Inltlatlve has gmwn in Influence and awareness and is now an
establlshed event In the town's calendar, wlth support from an Increaslng number of oryanlsauons ?rnd
communlty partners. The campaign attracted media attention, including by feature by brth local ITV and local
OBC news wlth Intervlews and slgnihcant radle coverage.
Internatlonal Women's Day on 8th March was marked by WCWAID wlth an evenl to celebrnte the theme of
'indusion'. Women created a large cvllaborative plece of art and came together to Sha￿ food that makes them
happy or Is a celebratlon d15h in their cu￿Ure. Other elements of the day included musical perfornian￿5,
jewellery and wreath making and a welcome flag dlsplay representlng the diversSty of the women who have
stayed at refuge.
Our Community Service5 have been dellvering a wldÈ varlety of group work, an emphasls on naturtrbasgd
and creatlve sessions,. for example, we introduced activ￿e5 sueh as wlld swimmlno and cernmlcs. Demand for
counselllng remalned hlgh. however, with addiknonal counsellors recruited, more women were able to access
thls Servi￿ thls year. Women were alsc able to acce55 Vlell-belng servlces whlle on the waiting Ilst or
last-tra¢ked If the need was urgent, through our Support and GuldaDce projeci.
Women and thelr chlldren at our refuge and supported by our resetdement servlce partldp8ted In our
extenslve holldays programme wlth culturnl, soaèl, tsmily and recreationil acttvlties to develop social
networks, strengthen famlly bonds, create happy mernories and have fun. The programme featured vSsits to
local places of inrerert and trips further afield, Includlng St Michael's Mount, local Museums, wildlife boat trfps,
beache5 and Ildos, parks and v400dland tdp$. Qnslie adlvlties Included communal pizza lunches using the
outdoor pizza oven, bakin9 sesslons, plantyng and growlng, and arts 3thv1￿es such as tFe dyelng.

The weekly Peer Support GroupN whlch started last year, has gone from strength to strength - the group brings
wornen together to Insplre and encourage each other on thelr personal Journeys to Ilve lives free from domestlc
abuse. Sesslorts have Included self-esleem and conffiJen¢e bulldlng workshops, creatlve arts ind healthy
relat(on$hlps workshops. The group brought women together to inspire and encourage each other on their
personal and unlque Journeys to live INe5 free from dorne5tic abuse.
The cost of I￿Ing crtsls ha5 had a blg Impact on women affert￿ by dornesuc abuse and sexual vlolence, and
we have accessed over £10,¢￿)0 of funds to dlrectly support women to reduce the impact of the cost of Ilving
ulsls on thelr Ilves.

Independent Sexual Vfiolen￿ Advocacy afXOSS the penlnsula.
