INTRODUCTION

Awareness Foundation is an international educational and humanitarian charity. It is driven by Christian values, with programmes that seek to positively transform the lives of disadvantaged children, young people and women and their wider communities; blighted by conflict, chaos and collapse.

The Foundation works to empower Christians everywhere to be a counterforce of love and understanding to the animosity and intolerance that prevails in many parts of the world, and to build understanding between faiths, especially in the Middle East.

Awareness Foundation does not provide emergency relief but rather implements longer-term interventions to promote sustainable peace and reconciliation. With a particular focus on Syria, recent events have reminded us of how volatile the Middle East can be, where so many cultures, faiths and traditions meet, merge, overlap and can tragically collide.

Which is why we are as determined as ever to carry on, and to expand, the work of Awareness Foundation, with our Little Heroes , Ambassadors for Peace and Enterprising Women programmes, and a new Pioneers programme aimed at teenagers. At pivotal moments such as this, it is crucial that there are voices that are educated and armed with the skills to build understanding and promote harmony.

And, as we forge ahead with our latest plans to build that sustainable peace through education in the Middle East and beyond, we’d like to share our latest completed annual report for the year 2024.

2024 – A YEAR TO REMEMBER

Working in areas such as the Middle East is always challenging. Delivering education, training and support to some of the most vulnerable people on the planet is done against the background of a broken and often oppressive society, where the situation can change from one day to the next.

Which is why, with the help of our amazing patrons, trustees, friends, partners and donors from all walks of life, we are so pleased that we can look back on 2024 with some pride. Despite the obstacles, in the past year, together, we have helped to develop skills and bring hope for a brighter future.

It has also been a busy year of spreading the word about the crucial work of Awareness Foundation, so that we can continue our mission. From speaking tours to Christmas festivals, fundraising treks to silent auctions, we’re so grateful to those who have supported us, in so many ways.

And, as always, everything we do is focused on continuing to support those in need, and to bring us closer to our goal of ‘Peace through Education’.

OUR ACHIEVEMENTS OUR PROGRAMMES

April - Little Heroes Leaders, Homs

One of the largest cities in Syria, Homs suffered terribly during the civil war. The impact has been devastating, especially on young children, which is one reason why we’ve been passionate about running courses there.

With so many issues arising from the conflict in the city, it has been a difficult process. But in 2024 we were delighted to finally train an incredible group of young people to be leaders for a Little Heroes programme.

Responding to calls from denomination heads, we worked with 20 highly motivated young people to empower them with all the skills they will need to run Little Heroes.

The enthusiasm of the group was wonderful to see, and they are now eager to throw themselves into the next programme. Aimed at children aged 6-12, Little Heroes uses therapeutic activities such as play, art and sport to help rebuild shattered childhoods, fostering confidence and resilience, while developing and discovering talents.

April - Ambassadors for Peace, Aleppo, Latakia, Syria

At the heart of the Ambassadors for Peace programme - which celebrated its 10[th] anniversary in 2024 - is building bridges between communities. And the skills and inspiration to build those bridges found concrete expression in our latest programmes, when 70 inspirational young adults from a range of denominations, come together under the title ‘The Person, The Relationship.’

Based on a verse from St Matthew’s Gospel, the group was given guidance in forging relationships based on the person and example of Christ. A series of workshops, studying scripture, prayers and discussion helped spark a range of creative ideas.

They also decorated t-shirts with designs expressing their thoughts about peace, and it was incredible to witness the commitment and thoughtfulness of these young people, given the times though which they have lived.

These are the motivated, creative, thoughtful young people who have been armed with the skills to help have a positive impact on the future of Syria.

June - September- Enterprising Women, Homs

Women in Homs have also paid a huge price for the conflicts that have engulfed the region. Personal tragedies, a lack of income, and scarce resources and opportunities have left many of them struggling to support their families and meet even their most basic needs.

In 2023 we launched Enterprising Women, and in 2024, under its umbrella, we were excited to run Super Women in partnership with Junior Chamber International (JCI) in the city.

Some 80 young women aged 20-35 were given training focused on helping them to play a role in their society and especially in the workplace. We offered coaching on business skills such as e-shopping, project management, communication and financial matters, along with personal, emotional and psychological development.

They were also given guidance on practical skills that could form the basis of small businesses and give them an edge in the labour market, such as fashion design, crochet, embroidery and making candles, soap and cosmetics.

The finale of the 50-hour programme was a conference featuring their work, attended by established women in business in the region.

7

Coinciding with Fr Nadim’s visit to North America, Awareness Foundation ran the first Ambassadors for Peace programme outside of the Middle East and Hong Kong.

Held at Parkdale United Church in Ottawa, a group of youth and church members considered ‘Faith in the Eye of the Storm,’ a reference to a passage in St Mark’s Gospel.

With workshops, prayer and discussion, it was a fruitful exercise in spreading further our mission to equip young people to be peacemakers in our troubled world.

The second Ambassadors for Peace Programme in North America was run in Dearborn, Michigan with a group of Americans and Arab Americans.

Counting the Joy of Transforming Lives

We were blessed that, despite the challenges, literally thousands of participants and their families were able to take part in our programmes.

Our ACTIVITIES

January – December - FUNDRAISING, FRIENDS AND FESTIVALS

Throughout 2024 Awareness Foundation was involved in events to raise both the profile of the charity’s work and the funds to support it. The Foundation is deeply grateful to all those who have helped to make both those aims successful.

January – Dinner at St James’s Palace

The 20th anniversary of Awareness Foundation really was the gift that kept on giving. It was the opportunity to spend time with, and thank, many of those who have made the Foundation’s work possible.

Among the wonderful events was a dinner at St James’s Palace, graciously hosted by our royal patron, HRH The Duchess of Edinburgh, where we welcomed friends and supporters from North America.

During the dinner, the International Chairman. James Appleyard. spoke of how the Awareness Foundation, with its small team and budget ‘has long contributed in an outsized way.’

- Breakfast at the House of Lords

Following dinner at St James’s Palace, our North American friends were invited to breakfast at the House of Lords, hosted by Archbishop Angaelos and The Rt Hon Baroness Anelay.

Both the Baroness and Archbishop took the opportunity to remind those present of Awareness Foundation’s work, with Archbishop Angaelos calling it nothing short of ‘miraculous, empowering, edifying and uplifting.’

- Westminster Abbey and Methodist Central Hall

Awareness Foundation concluded the 20th anniversary celebrations where they began, at the Jerusalem Chamber at Westminster Abbey, with Bishop Anthony Ball, the Anglican and Episcopal Bishop of North Africa.

After Bishop Ball called on us all to be ambassadors for the Foundation, wherever we are in the world, there was a tour of the Abbey and the Methodist Central Hall, with the assistance of Richard Smart and Rob Humphreys, and Ali McMillan, Deacon at the Hall.

May – Volunteers (Work-based learning placement, St Marylebone School)

Awareness Foundation has been in partnership with St Marylebone School, offering work-based learning placements to students who wish to volunteer. The aim to bridge the gap between classroom learning and practical skills needed in the real world.

The students/volunteers start the placement by taking onboarding orientation, Health & safety training, safeguarding, the Foundation’s mission, policies, and procedures before they start working. This experience enhances various skills such as teamwork, communication, problem solving and social media marketing.

At the end of the placement, Awareness Foundation expresses gratitude to the volunteers for their efforts and provides them with evaluation and recommendation letters.

Awareness Foundation encourages volunteers to contribute their expertise in various capacities which can help reduce operational costs and foster a mutually beneficial relationship.

April – December - Tours, Talks, and Training

To carry on the essential work of the Awareness Foundation, we need to spread the word about our mission, raise our profile, and partner with likeminded individuals and organisations.

For that reason, it is essential to engage with as many different groups as possible on the ground in the Middle East, along with friends, supporters and potential supporters elsewhere.

Alongside an incredibly rewarding trip to Syria by Executive Director, the Rev’d Nadim Nassar, and Middle East Director, Huda Nassar, Fr Nadim had a packed schedule of meetings in North America.

Syria

As well as helping to support our programmes in Syria, Fr Nadim embarked on an important round of meetings, talks and preaching, helping to establish important connections.

In Homs, where the need for help and support is critical, he met with Syriac Orthodox Archbishop, His Eminence Timotheues Matta Alkhouri, and His Grace Bishop Gregorios Khoury, Greek Orthodox Assistant Bishop of the Patriarch of Antioch.

Both bishops spoke with enthusiasm about working with the Awareness Foundation to help transform lives in Homs.

Fr Nadim also preached in Homs, and at the National Presbyterian Church in his hometown of Latakia. Also, in Latakia, he gave a talk on St Thomas to young people at the Maronite

Church and spoke on ‘Faith and Doubt in Today’s World’ to a mixed-denominational group at the Latin Church.

At the Robert Skaf Library, Fr Nadim and Huda Nassar were presented with the Shield of the Library in recognition of Awareness Foundation’s ministry.

North America

Awareness Foundation is blessed to have an active group of supporters in both Canada and the USA.

Montreal

Fr Nadim visited Montreal, Canada, where he spoke at a dinner of Arab and Canadian friends, social figures and academics, about the Foundation’s work in the Middle East.

He also met members of the faculty at the Presbyterian Theological Seminary of McGill University and discussed how the organisations can work together.

Ottawa

As mentioned above, we ran an Ambassadors for Peace programme in the city.

Toronto

Fr Nadim met Dr Andrea Mann, Director of Global Relations at the Anglican Church in Canada, to advance cooperation on the Foundation’s ministry in conflict zones.

Minneapolis

After travelling to the US, Fr Nadim joined a conference on Prayer in Our Time in Minneapolis. In sessions attended by church leaders from across the Americas, Africa and the Middle East, he spoke about the situation of Christians in the Middle East, and the power of prayer in the region.

New Jersey

After giving a sermon at the First Lutheran Church in Clifton, New Jersey, Fr Nadim answered questions from the congregation about the Foundation’s work.

Michigan

As explained above, Fr Nadim helped support a short Ambassadors for Peace programme in Dearborn.

May - Sponsored of Awareness Foundation’s most intrepid supporters clocked up the kilometres in the cause of Peace through Education.

Jane Lawless completed a 145km hike though Scotland’s West Highlands, while Alex Cox cycled 960km across Spain to the pilgrim site of Santiago de Compostela.

October - Peace Walk

In 2024 our annual sponsored Peace Walk was also dedicated to the 10th anniversary of Ambassadors for Peace.

Led by the knowledgeable pilgrimage expert Richard Smart, a hardy group of friends walked from the town of Radlett to the beautiful St Albans Cathedral. They were met by the Dean, the Very Rev’d Jo Kelly-Moore and Canon Chancellor, the Rev’d Dr Kevin Walton.

It was a wonderful occasion marking a decade of work with the Ambassadors, a moving expression of togetherness, and a reminder of the positive impact we can have when we work together to positively transform lives.

November - Annual Gala Dinner

Our 2024 Annual Gala Dinner was held at the Lansdowne Club in central London, in the presence of our Royal Patron, HRH The Duchess of Edinburgh.

The dinner was dedicated to celebrating the 10th anniversary of Ambassadors of Peace and a highlight of the evening was a lovely conference call with a group of Ambassadors in Syria.

The Duchess spoke movingly about the Foundation’s work and the dinner was also an opportunity to recognise those individuals who had been especially supportive in 2024.

December - Christmas Tree Festival at Saint Mary Magdalene Church in London

It gave great joy to everyone at the Awareness Foundation, to once more be chosen as the designated charity for the Christmas Tree Festival at St Mary Magdalene Church, Wandsworth Common, London.

The festival is always a beautiful celebration of the season of goodwill, and with so many trees sponsored by local businesses, families, charities and other groups, it is a true community effort.

Awareness Foundation is humbled by all those who helped make the event such a success.

OTHER 2024 HIGHLIGHTS

January – Conference “Evangelism in a Divided World”

While its work embraces those in need from across various faiths and cultures, the Awareness Foundation is rooted in the true Christian values of love, forgiveness, inclusivity and redemption.

Which is why Fr Nadim was delighted to join the Bishop of Dover, The Rt Rev’d Rose Hudson-Wilkin, as keynote speakers at the annual conference of The Fellowship of Parish Evangelism (FPE).

The FPE is a network committed to supporting evangelism, centred on Christ’s teachings, in the UK and worldwide.

Fr Nadim spoke passionately of the purpose and power of evangelism, while helping to run lively workshops, packed with innovative ideas around evangelism.

February – March - Lent Talk

For Christians everywhere, the season of Lent is an opportunity for reflection, and to help focus thoughts during this time, Fr Nadim presented a series of weekly meditations on the Gospels, live online.

Beginning with St Mark’s account of Christ’s baptism and his temptation in the wilderness, Fr Nadim took us on a journey through key events in His ministry concluding on Good Friday with St John’s powerful account of Christ’s might and majesty, even in his moments of suffering and death on the cross.

May - A Royal Appointment

The work of Awareness Foundation in the Middle East was given royal recognition when His Majesty, King Charles III, invited Fr Nadim, Executive Director and Huda Nassar, Director for the Middle East, to a garden party at Buckingham Palace.

It was also an acknowledgement of the Foundation’s efforts to build bridges between that region and the West.

July - A Proud Graduation

A particularly proud moment in 2024 was when Feras Elias, one of our Ambassadors for Peace, graduated with a degree in dentistry from Wadi International University in Syria.

An objective of the Ambassadors’ programme is to help equip young people in the area to face life’s trials with the strength of their faith, which is why it was wonderful that Feras dedicated his dissertation to the Foundation, which he described as a ‘beacon of faith.’

October – November - Little Heroes Art Exhibition

Among the events that really stood out in 2024 were two exhibitions of art by our Little Heroes, in which they presented beautiful visions of peace.

Painted as part of the programme’s art therapy, under the direction of celebrated Syrian artist Nizar Sabour, the pictures are a captivating expression of the youngsters hope for the future.

They were first displayed at St Mary Magdalene Church, Wandsworth Common, at Easter, with a walk through the pictures in the way of Stations of the Cross, with prayers and reflection.

We were then delighted to arrange an exhibition of the paintings at Rochester Cathedral in Kent under the title ‘Picturing Peace.’

The exhibition was formally launched by the cathedral’s Dean, The Very Rev’d Dr Philip Hesketh, in the presence of the Medway Mayor, Marian Nestorov. The Dean used one of the paintings, an image of a small boat at sea – reflecting those who have fled conflict – as the basis for his sermons over Christmas.

November – Ambassadors for Peace voice in Syria

Awareness Foundation is not a political organisation. Its role is to train and educate children, young people and women to transform their lives, help transform their wider communities and create environments of peace and understanding.

Which is why, as the momentous events unfolded in Syria just before Christmas, the Foundation was in touch with a group of our Ambassadors for Peace, enabling them to stay in contact with, and support, each other.

It was a time when many of the skills they had learned in the Ambassadors for Peace programme came into play. It helped them to calm those around them and begin to make plans as to how to respond.

Subsequently, the group created 10 points they would like to see included in any future constitution, and they have liaised with other groups in Syria.

In a time of uncertainty, our Ambassadors are voices of peace, understanding and reconciliation.

SOCIAL AND MEDIA

We try to keep everyone up to date with all the latest news and events related to Awareness Foundation on our social media channels:

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AwarenessFoundationMiddleEast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/awareness_foundation/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCC_R__NAerM3WJUd_Mh0eAw Website: https://awareness-foundation.com/

And, while our media programme PAX is on hold while we redesign our website to create a more engaging experience, our Executive Director Fr Nadim is still often called upon by the media, as an expert on Middle East relations.

One such occasion was following the recent momentous events in Syria, when Fr Nadim was asked to speak to BBC Arabic.

More than 6,500 people viewed the interview, which not only helped raise the profile of The Awareness Foundation, but also helped spread the key message of peace, understanding and reconciliation in the region.

INDEPENDENT EXAMINER’S REPORT TO THE TRUSTEES OF AWARENESS FOUNDATION

We have reviewed the accounts of Awareness Foundation for the year ended 31 December 2024, which comprise the Statement of Financial Activities (including summary income and expenditure account), Balance Sheet, Statement of Cash Flows and notes to the accounts including a summary of significant accounting policies. The accounts have been prepared in accordance with the Statement of Recommended Practice: Accounting and Reporting by Charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) issued on 16 July 2014.

Trustees’ Responsibility for the Accounts

As explained more fully in the statement of trustees’ responsibilities, the trustees, who are also the directors of Awareness Foundation for the purposes of company law, are responsible for the preparation of the accounts and for being satisfied that they give a true and fair view.

Accountants’ Responsibility

Our responsibility is to express a conclusion on the accounts. We conducted our review in accordance with International Standard on Review Engagements (ISRE) 2400 (Revised) to review historical accounts. ISRE 2400 (Revised) requires us to conclude whether anything has come to our attention that causes us to believe that the accounts, taken as a whole, are not prepared, in all material respects, in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) issued on 16 July 2014. ISRE 2400 (Revised) also requires us to comply with the ACCA code of Ethics and the FRC’s Ethical Standard.

Scope of the Assurance Review

A review of the accounts in accordance with ISRE 2400 (Revised) is a limited assurance engagement. We have performed procedures, primarily consisting of making enquiries of management and others within the charity, as appropriate, applying analytical procedures, and evaluating the evidence obtained. The procedures performed in a review are substantially less than those performed in an audit conducted in accordance with International Standards on Auditing (UK). Accordingly, we do not express an audit opinion on these accounts.

Conclusion

Based on our review, nothing has come to our attention that causes us to believe that the accounts have not been prepared:

Use of our report

This report is made solely to the charity’s trustees, as a body, in accordance with section 43 of the Charities Act 1993 and regulations made under section 44 of that Act. Our review work has been undertaken so that we might state to the charity’s trustees those matters we are required to state to them in a reviewers’ report and for no other purpose. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we do not accept or assume responsibility to anyone other than the charitable company and its trustees as a body, for our review work, for this report, or for the opinions we have formed.
