GNSA Annual Report 1st July 2021 – 30th June 2022 (Verbal report)
I’m proud to chair GNSA: the Grandpont Nursery School Association, the umbrella charity which runs the family room (SOFR) as well as supporting the Nursery via FoG (Friends of Grandpont).
I work alongside my fellow Trustees Katie Wyvil as GNSA secretary, Carole Stow as GSNA Treasurer, who are both regular family room users. They bring with them their first-hand knowledge of our sessions and a huge commitment to provide the best possible offer to the children, families and carers who attend South Oxford Family Room and Grandpont Nursery School.
The Family Room (SOFR)
The twice weekly Family Room Stay and Play sessions run by Karen and Wendy in 2021-22 have been very popular with families (Yan, I’ll see if I get any numbers tomorrow). Note that although outside this reporting period, the lynchpin of the Family Room, our coordinator Karen Wilson, is due to retire in Sept 2022; establishing a system to keep the family room going is an important part of the 2022/23 goals (see below).
Families and carers come to SOFR because they receive a warm friendly welcome from our staff and volunteers, for the wide variety of play opportunities and because we offer a fantastic healthy snack for the children (thanks to Oxford Food Hub) which children all sit down and enjoy together. The Trustees would like to thank our dedicated team, Karen, Wendy, Phil and our volunteer Thea for all their hard work this year.
The gardens remain one of our biggest assets with areas of shelter from sun, wind and rain allowing the sessions to be outside whatever the weather. As families continue to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, they have been a great space for children and their parents and carers to play and enjoy time together.
Phil Oakley has continued to run our Saturdads/Family Fun sessions. Reflecting it’s the weekend, these are less structured sessions than our week day offer but continue to offer the warm and supportive family room welcome. Phil is always seeking to increase the numbers of dads and working mums accessing the sessions, alongside the number of families who regularly attend.
Highlights for 2021-22
- Family Triathlon: This is our largest fundraiser and was held on 5th Sept 2021 (the 2022 Family Triathlon was on 3rd July, just outside the reporting period of this report). The 2021 triathlon was held it in
September rather than June/July due to uncertainty about Covid regulations. Despite covid issues we had a total of 55 families entering, 98 adults and 100 children (aged 3-14). Local councillor Marie Tidball took part by way of an enormously impressive 8km sponsored swim, raising £4500 just by herself! Including this, we raised total of over £9000, a new record for the event - a huge thanks to Marie and all our sponsors. A grant from the Shanley foundation of £1200, covered expenses for the event. Clearly, holding the event in September can work as well as the previous June/July timing.
-
In the Light Garden: Another annual event which raises money and promotes our activities. This raised over £700. The Jericho Coffee traders van (owned by a parent at the nursery) provided outdoor drinks, with proceeds going to FoG, and for the first time we cooked wood fired pizza (charging £5 per family extra for this - thanks to Neal Tucker for the pizza oven). It was a great success, although in future we should reduce the length of the queue for pizza.
-
●Grant raising - see the treasurer’s report. We raised around £8000 in grants (including e.g. funding for the triathlon).
Goals for 2022-23
-
To continue secure a sustainable footing for the family room following the split from Grandpont Nursery School at the end of January 2023. This may include registering a new charity, with a new set of Trustees to run the South Oxford Family Room (and employ the lead playworker), with GNSA focussing on the activities of Friends of Grandpont only. We have a list of potential trustees for this new charity, and intend to take it forward in the next few months.
-
●As part of the above, to ensure that the organisation and administration of the Family Room can continue on a sustainable basis following the retirement of Karen, the coordinator who has been instrumental in keeping the SOFR project going, and the resignation of our lovely playworker, Wendy, due to ill health. As of Sept 2022 we have a wonderful new lead playworker, Megan Harcourt, and need to make sure she is fully supported in helping to take the family room forward.
-
To continue to seek views and listen to the families and carers who use the family room so that we can provide services and activities that meet their needs wherever possible. We would love more people to get
involved with the family room: however big or small your contribution will be really welcomed.
- To continue to increase community awareness of our sessions and
specifically to encourage families who may be considered as vulnerable for a variety of reasons to attend.
-
To identify other projects or users who meet our mission and would rent the family room.
-
To widen our use of the local community, nature reserve and woodland
-
areas for nature walks and forest school type activities and to continue to strengthen our relationship with Hogacre Common Eco Park
-
●To promote the Nursery School and Daycare to users of the Family Room.
Friends Of Grandpont
Sadly, due to a new headteacher taking over at the Nursery School, and the continuation of indoor Covid worries, we were not able to run FoG activities such as the Xmas Bazaar in the Jul 2021 - Jun 2022 time period. This should be addressed for summer / winter 2022. It would be useful to recruit more helpers from among nursery school parents for this, and the acting head during 2022, Grace Slater, has been helping with this.
