CHAIRMAN`S REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDING 31st.AUGUST, 2022.
The year has been dominated by seemingly endless battles with two of the main pillars of British Industry, namely the banks and the electricity supply industry. After many months and many tribulations, we have succeeded in opening an on-line bank account. As for electricity, the transfer of supply from one tenant to his successor is proving to be a bureaucratic maze of competing interests. A saga that is still ongoing. I must thank my vice-chairman, David, and the treasurer, Ian, in particular for their time and patience in tackling these problems.
As for property matters, the main item has been obtaining quotes for, and eventually obtaining replacements for the roof windows which had been causing concern. Our thanks to Martin Tremayne for pursuing this. Additionally, there has been the usual run of smaller matters ranging from replacing roof slates to installing toilet roll holders- not to mention restoring the iconic bike!
Our finances have held up well in a difficult climate. Although we were unable to hold the annual fundraising event at Penwarne (we hope to resume again next Spring). We have been fortunate to benefit from a hog roast at the Jubilee celebrations which raised £987. Out thanks go to Martin`s daughter for generously providing the roast. I must also record our thanks to the Parish Council for the grant of £5,000 towards the cost of the roof windows.
After holding the tenants` rents steady for some years, the Board decided to increase for the coming year. Even allowing for the increase, the rents are still very attractive for new tenants seeking to establish a craft business.
It looks like by the end of the year there will be two workshops vacant however once the electricity supply is sorted Jim Head is still keen to move in and as I write this Jeremy Cash an experienced blacksmith who belongs to the Cornish Blacksmith Collective (CBC) is also keen to take on the Smithy premises. The CBC would also like to run some training and demonstrations at the Smithy which would fulfil the Trust’s ethos. Let’s hope that this will happen.
I regret to report that one of our longest serving Trustees, indeed a founder member of the Trust, Rex Sadler, has decided to resign. Rex been a stalwart supporter of the Trust over 20 years and we have benefitted greatly from his advice and guidance on many occasions. Our thanks to Rex.
Two new Trustees have joined us and I am pleased to welcome Adam Mason and Shelley Tonkin to our ranks.
I would also like to thank Clare Lake for her work keeping the courtyard tidy and free of weeds etc.
Lastly I would like to thank all the Trustees for their continued work and dedication in these uncertain and troubled times.
