CHAIRMAN'S ANNUAL REPORT
This mornlng when consSdering what to put in this year's report, I thought I would look at a
few local charities to see how they have survived over these past few drfficult years. I was
amazed at the numbers of differentcharitles In Devon, 40(K) of them. l asked myself howthey
survived. or even dld they? Unite Carers was there within their numbers, and yes, we did
survive, and we are sur4iving, in fact we are in a more secure position now than we have been
for a few years.
Not to rest on our laurels, we know that the effort to keep afloat 15 ever present, but it's good
to take a Small breather.
The major element keeping our serv5ces 8oln8 must be our ablllty to fund these services. It's
not easy, 8one arethe dayswhen a letterto a generousfundin8source might result in financial
help. These days there are complicated forms to fill in correctly, Ino mistskes ac¢epted}, befo
we even 8et considered.
So, when Andrew Grzeslnskl became a volunteer wlth speclal skllls In fundralslng and all It
entslls, we were very fortunate and selzed hls offer of help with both hands. Andrew worked
wlth Sharon Improvlng our finances to the polnt where we can stsrt to conslder employlng a
much needed third member of staff.
In July 2023, we were sad to lose Natalie, our Treasurer, the demands of a full-tlme job and a
voun8 family just didn't allow her time to fill the post as she would have liked.
Jenny Baker also reslgned from her post a5 a Trustee. Jenny had been a great strength when
our Board of Trustees was down to three.
In October, Stephanle JoSned us as a Trustee and officlal minutes taker.
Our IT updated systems contlnue to run smoothly under Jacvs watchful eye.
Trustees have received tralnin8 in 8ood 8overnance; fulfillin8 and understandin8 their role,.
GDPR issues and the legal dutie5 of a Trustee.
To all the Trustees18lve my personal thanks for thelr commttment understandln8 and ever-
present support.
To Indicate that our services are safe, of high qualityand that they meet certaln requirements
we declded to update and renew the Quallty Assurance Mark, Trary was engaged In the
organisation of this.
In Au8USt we were saddened to learn that Roy Grantham, our retired Chaimian had died. Roy
haired Unite for 8 years Steerin8 US through many changes and throuBh the covid period.
Sharon, Tracy, Lara, Neil and l attended his funerdl. Even then Roy did not forget Unite, all
donations at his funeral were dedicated to Unite.

Chalrman's Annual Report (Continued)
As you will see from the statistics report our numbers in all fields are generally rising. Sharon
and Trdcy wlll glve you more information aboutthis.
We h3ve benefited fromthe generosityof local businesse5, not alway5 Wlth dirertfinance but.
in the case of a local housin8 developer Barratt David Wilson Homes. our offices received a
makeover when a team from the buildlng firm armed with palntbru5he5 arrived to transform
Unlte's workln8 envlronment.
I have attended several networklng promotional events and cheque presentation meetlngs
throughout the year with Sharon.
On 23rf September volunteers from varlous charities across Devon received a Royal
commendation from HRH Sophie Duchess of Edinburgh at a special breakfast event held at
Cold Harbour Mill hosted by David Fursdon, Lord Lieutenant of Devon.
The event focused on brlngln8 tO8ether some of the 4000 Devon Charitie5 to dlscuss thelr
challen8es and ways of help5n8. Sharon and l attended thls event 8lvln8 us both the
opportuntty to talk with the Duchess of Edlnbur8h who showed remarkable Insl8ht Into the
problems faclng ch3ritie5.
In December, the Lost Kitchen. a local restaurant in Chettiscombe, gave our volunteers a
splendld evenin8 of food, wine and 8eneral enjoyment. Earlier In the year the Lost Kitchen
had invlted our Volunteers to a Cream Tea - another generous gesture.
To Our Team of commltted volunteers.
We the Trustees are filled with admiration at the dedication shown by you as you help ease
the load our carers bear, at your wlllin8ness to 8ive your tlme and energy and at your unfailing
support given to those that Unite Carers was set up to assist.
You do not seek gratitude. but heartfelt messages from grateful users of our services thanklng
you for helping them through the bad times are not uncommon. We accept them with pride
and share them wlth you. You are the heart of Unrte, wlthout you we would not BE.
Our staff Sharon and Tracy have kept Unite going when times were hard, and resources
stretched not just wff(h the general administration; the finance; organising volunteers and
cleanin8 the offices.... but with personal sacrifice as well, working through the cold weather
with no heating, wearing scarves gloves and plug in electric blankets around their knees.
That's dedlcatlon.
Thank you, Sharon and Trary Unite Carers salute you.

GENERAL MANAGER OVERVIEW
After a difficult couple of years comin8 Out of covid, the recruitment of new Trustees has
stren8thened the experience and guidance from the Board enabling us to look forward and
plan for the future.
With the support of Trdcy working 21 hours per week, I have been able to concentrdte on
worklng with our Advisor Andy Grzesinski on applications for larEer amounts of funding in
order to give the charity Stabilty 80in8 into our 21st year.
You will see from our donationsand grants listingsthatwe are supported by local people with
small amounts as well as receivln8 large amounts from funders such as The National Lottery.
As Tesco says- every little helps- and we are very grateful for the ongoing local support.
l am delighted that our finances are in a much better position, which means we can now start
looking for a third member of staff.
My role as General Manager meansthat l overseethe dayto day running of the charityaswell
as preparingthe accounts, budgeting and funding applications.
It is a privilege to be working with such wonderful volunteers. Reading through Tracy's report
fi115 me with pride on how much we are supporting unpaid Ca￿T5 in Mid Devon-we couldn't
provide the services we offer without the dedication of our volunteers and the time that they
freely give to the charity-
Our webstte and Facebook pages are full of information for carer5, but most importantly we
are ableto SUPPOrt carer5 who do not have accessto the digital world and want to see us face
to face. As well as the monthly support groups and face to face befriending. carers are able
to drop into our office for direct support. We are generally open at least 10 am to 4 pm
Monday to Friday, but it is always best to call ahead in case Tracy and l are in meetings,
covering groups. or indeed on leave! We use our No 4 officefor many of our support groups
which means we are able to get to know our carers more personally and support volunteers
when needed.
There have been many hi8hlights from the last 12 months - not least my contact with our
Patron Angela Rippon - especially during her time on Strictly Come Dancin81 Breakfast wtth
Sophie. Duchess of Edinburgh at Coldharbour Mill v￿S of course a privilege. However, the
best part of the job is helping support our carers and going the extrd mile. The thank you
messages we receive often bring Tracy and I to tears, and we are proud to work with our
volunteers who are part of the Unftefrdmily.
September 2024 marks my 10 anniversary working for the charity. From covering the Offlce
Administrator on matemity leave to becoming General Manager- working wtth youn8 carers
and Devon Carers staff. The last decade has been eventful but fun and I have enjoyed lalmostl)
every minLrte of itl
I hope I will still be here supporting volunteers and carers for many years to come.
Best wishes
sharon Trerise

AGM Report for Adult Carerg Servlces
I" Aprll 2023- 31" March 2024
Atthe last AGM I Introduced myself to you as the new Carer's Servlces Manager, taking over
from Sarah Taft and Jenny Tower and I've now been in role, workln8 21 hours a week, since
1st November 2022. The tlme hasflown by so quickly, I've been kept very busy and It's
almost incomprehensible to me to think that I have already been in post for nearly two
years. Thankyou for acceptlng me so warmly Into your Unite family.
The main part of my role is Co-ordinating the I:1 services but as with any small charity such
as ours, staff have to be adaptable and often a "Jack of all trades" so It's hard to define what
my Job role Is- one day I'll be on a home safety vlslt for befrlending or provldln8 targeted
I:1 support and the next I'll be trylng to unblock the slnk In the office,
Small charttle5 also find fundlng hard to come by and grant applicatSon5 are laborlous and
take tlme. Sharon {supported by Andy) has done an amazln8Job over the last year securlng
funding to ensure that Unite Carers is more financially viable than It'5 been In recent h15tory,
certalnly for the past 2 years.
But we all know and acknowledge that Unlte Carers couldn't support carers In the way that
It does wlthout the unwaverln8 SUPPOrt of our loyal volunteers and all that they do to help
others. Whether thls is through leadlng or hÈlplng at the groups, 8lvlng your tlme In so
many ways, or 8lving vltal support throu8h our host of I:1 servlces, we Just cannot do it
wlthout you. Once a8aln, thank you - Unite are very lucky to have you.

Befrlending and Telephone Friendshlp
Unlte's free Befrlendln8 Servlce matches carers wlth a Ilke-mlnded volunteer befriender
who they can meetfor a cup of tea and a chat in a local café perhaps, plan an attlvlty or
outln8 tO8ether, or vlslt carers In thelr homes if they are unable to 8et away.
Prlor to the befrlendlng match, there Is a conversatlon wlth the carer, more formally known
as Yhe Carerfs Assessment", to find out what the carer's needs and wants are from the
befrlendlng relationshlp, the type of person they would Ilke as thelr befrlender, how often
they would like to meet and where, Interests and hobbles etc. If meetings are experted to
take place In the carerfs home, a home visit Is carried out prior to the first 8et-tO8ether. A
review Is then carried out after 3 months to make sure that both parties are happy,
although contart 15 encouraged at any point should a problem arlse. Our carers and
befrienders know that any problems will be handled tactfully, discreetly and with care.
We also offer Telephone Frlendship. based on the model above, so that carers can enjoy
chattin8 With someone over the phone, from the comfort of their own home,
Unite Carerfs Befriending Service Is unique, not Just because rfs one of the only befriending
services Still available in Mid Devon, but because iys not time limited- when carers are set
up with their befriender and are happy In the 3-month revlew perlod, they can contlnue to
see their befriender for as lon8 35 they would like. We don't take the support away.
New for this year, to brin8 us in line with our Groups, we have secured fundin8 from Devon
Communlty Foundatlon to allow befrienders to treat carers to refreshments of thelr choice
when they meet up- coffee and cake perhaps. Thank you to DCF for thls fundin81 it's really

Counselllng For Carers
We re-started our free Counselllng For Carers service In February 2023 with Jessle and It
remains a vital support service to carers, at a time whÈn they need it most. This yÈar we
have been very lucky to have worked wlth 3 new student counsellors, In collaboratlon wlth
Petroc and Exeter Colle8es. Lyndsey volunteered private counselling session5 to carers
between December 2023 and May 2024, and Catherine and Simone started wlth us In Aprll

All our counsellors werelare In thelrfourth and final year worklng towards the Lv.4 Dlploma

The Inltial course of &8 counsellSng sessions (more offered if necessary) can take place In

professionallsm and commitment to carers and to Unite, is greatly appreciated by us all.
Forrn-fllllng Support
Unlte's form-fillin8 service has been very much in demand this year as we contlnue to
receive even more requests from carers for help to complete long and complicated
paperwork. We have helped carers wlth anything from Attendance Allowance to Blue
Badge appllcations, the Household Support Fund to Dlsability Living Allowance, either in
paper or on-line form. We have also offered confidentlal space and IT facillties to carers
when their home environment isn't suitable for the task at hand.
%• For the perlod l Aprll 2023 to 31 March 2024. 55 Carers accessed forni-fllllng

Thank you to our hard-working form-fillingvolunteers. l am very aware that I have asked a
lot of you thls year and yet you still keep deliverin& making a real drfference to the lives of

so many people. Thank you, we really appreciate how difficult and time con5umingthis
voluntary role can be and you are amazing.
I'd also Ilke to take thls opportunlty tothank the carers who have made a voluntary financial
contrlbutlon to the counselling and form-filllng seThfjces this year; your generosity allows
Unite to continue to provide these important services to all unpaid carer5.
IT Support
Compared to our other I:1 services, IT support has been a Ilttle quiet thi5 year, but still
slightly busier than the Same period last year.
For the perfod l¥t Aprfl 2023 to 31st March 2024, 9 Carers have accessed rr support.

Our IT support volunteers are avallable to help carers and former carers to 8et started on-

SAFE STOPSIThING SERVICE
During2023we had two Safe Stop groups running. One in Tiverton atthe Cherith Church
Venue which is still very much alive. The other was in Witheridge in the viitsge hall.
Although we had good attendance in Witheridge, the venue didn't work out so we
therefore decided to stop running thls group.
The group held in Cherith Church, (which is 8 very good venue in allways), is held on the
2￿land 41hWednesd8ys ofthe month from 10 am until 12.30pm. From Septemberwe are
running it from 10.30 am until 1 pm to allow carers 8 little extra time in the mornings to
getup and out.
The group Is for the c8rers loved one to attend. We often call It a 'coffee morning. or
'sociai group, and not a sitting service which I think promotes the cared-for persons
dlgnity a little better. The group's intention is forthe 'cared-for person, to be well catered
for with refreshments, conversation, fun. stimulation and a choice of what they would
like to do. All of this whilst their carer get8 8 Ilttle resplte for the mornlng to shop, go for
coffe8 or to the dentist, hairdressers orjustsit with a newspaper quietly. Carers are very
welcome to st8y8nd have a fun tlmewith us all iftheywlsh.
We have a wide variety of activities going on, mostly aimed at having fun through
Stimulation both of mlnd and body. We have entertainers vlslt with muslc, song and
quizzes 8bout an amazing array ot old household objects. We play game8 - C8rds,
dominos, carpet boules. golf. curllng. bowling, quoits, chair football for ex8mple. At
times we do a little craft, test our knowledge with a quiz or working out riddles and we
giggle overfunnyjokes and stories. There is a lot of banter and fun.
The volunteer team are amazing and an important part of the whole session brlnging
much c8re and love to all and 8dding greatlytothe laughterandjoy.
At the moment, we heve 4 regular 8ttendees. and it would be great to double that
number. There is a sm811 charge of £10 8 session to help cover costs and need for
experienced staff on hand in safegu8rding and fiist ald. Everyone has great fun, have
become friends and look forward to tho sessions.
Please call the office for further information.
