Its registered address is: 12 Old Mill Close, Burley in Wharfedale, Ilkley. Its object is to promote any charitable purposes for the benefit of the inhabitants of Burley in Wharfedale, Burley Woodhead and Stead by any such means that are deemed to be exclusively charitable according to the laws of England and Wales **.** The charity is run by a committee of elected and co-opted trustees who have control of the association and its property and funds. There should be at least 3 and not more than 18 members of the Committee, all of whom must be members of the Trust. New trustees are recruited and co-opted onto the board by the existing trustees and elected at the AGM. All trustees give their time voluntarily. The Trust would like to thank all its trustees for their time and efforts towards the furtherance of its aims and objects. The Committee must hold at least 4 meetings a year. A quorum at a committee meeting is 5 members. The Trust has a number of powers set out in the constitution which may be exercised only in promoting its object. Membership of the Trust is open to any individual or organisation interested in promoting the charity. Membership is by annual or lifetime subscription. ## **ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE 2020/21** The Trust has had another successful year with membership at 978 (2019/20, 986). In addition to subscriptions and donations from members we have received income from Burley Parish Council, Burley Educational Trust, Shipley Community Chest, Greenbelt and the Coop community scheme. We also claimed Gift Aid on membership and donations of £2,370 in the year. Our management of the Scalebor Park grounds has continued and we have been helped by Burley Trojans and Burley Cricket Club. We continue to organise the Christmas Lights, Christmas Market, Craft Fair and Duck Race; although, with the exception of the Lights, these were cancelled this financial year due to covid-19 regulations. Our thanks go to all the volunteers that help with Trust management, activities and maintaining its assets. Having raised funds from various sources we have managed to help several village organisations with their fundraising efforts. These include the Library (new furniture), Scouts and Guides (new HQ), Walkers are Welcome (new kissing gates), Love Burley (covid-19 support) and Unique. ## **BURLEY IN WHARFEDALE COMMUNITY TRUST** ## **TRUSTEES’ REPORT YEAR ENDED 30TH SEPTEMBER** ## **2021** ## **ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE 2020/21 (continued)** In line with our ongoing responsibilities we funded, supervised and undertook the maintenance of the Scalebor grounds and pavilion, Pudding Tree and Jubilee gardens, Corn Mill Pond, Fountain of Life and provided hanging baskets and flower tubs in the centre of the village. The village website is also part of the Trust’s responsibilities and has recently been upgraded. During the year the Trust provided £30,778 towards completion of the playground in Grange Park; this was raised mainly through public fundraising, individual donations and legacies. We have also been helping with the funding of the refurbishment of the Roundhouse Garden and a new herb garden. We are currently fundraising to help with better footpath access for wheelchair and pushchair users and to provide village information boards for residents and visitors. The litter-picking initiative, started by trustee Loraine Hughes under the name of Wharfedale Wombles, has been a great success with regular volunteer litter-picks in the village on the first Sunday of the month and several others more regularly by certain members in areas near to their homes. We have also been funding the start of the local Men’s Shed in Burley which meets twice a month in the Bowling Pavilion on Wednesday mornings and we are actively involved in the wellbeing initiative in the village. In addition, the Trust has been negotiating, with the help of legal advisors and with the approval of the Charity Commission, a merger with the Burley Educational Trust (BET) to take over their assets and objectives. Funds from BET will be incorporated within the Trust to be used for educational purposes. At the year-end total reserves stand at £67,925 of which £60,296 is for the General Purpose non-specific fund. Over £35,000 has been committed to activities listed below. ## **BURLEY IN WHARFEDALE COMMUNITY TRUST** ## **TRUSTEES’ REPORT YEAR ENDED 30th SEPTEMBER** ## **2021** ## **FUTURE PLANS** The Trust’s future plans for promoting charitable activity for the benefit of the local residents include the following: - Complete the merger with Burley Educational Trust. - Continue the Christmas Lights, Christmas Markets and the Duck Race. - Maintain the grounds at Scalebor and various village assets including the Corn Mill Pond and Fountain of Life. - Install village information boards in two locations. - Maintain and improve the website to provide access for village organisations and businesses. - Improve walking and access provision around the village for all abilities and ages. **_85,561_**| |---|---|---| ## _**NOTES TO THE ACCOUNTS**_ **1. Bradford MDC carry out the maintenance and replacement of the Christmas lights. Part of the cost is invoiced to and paid by the Parish Council whilst the main balance is funded by the Trust. In the year to September 2021, income included £408 raised by a raffle organised by the local Coop store.** **2. During the year, BWCT used the remaining retained funds and donated a further £15,000 for the completion of phase 2 of the playground project (including the installation of a zip wire) .** **3. Donations of £4,194 from Shipley Community Chest were for the Herb Garden, Walking With Wheels and other projects.** **A total of £1,900 was received from a number of individuals and from each church in the village towards benches in and around the village.** **£750 was received in donations for free school meals during the October half-term. This, with the related Gift Aid, was given to the village schools' hardship funds following the government's decision to support the cost.** **4. Rent received for use of the pavilion by Burley Trojans (£1,400) and the cricket club (£300) plus sundry income from use of the grounds by third parties (£300).** **5. BWCT receives funds from Greenbelt as part of an annual service agreement, to maintain the grounds and playing field at Scalebor which the Trust subcontracts to a local contractor.** ## **6. Gift Aid is claimed on membership subscriptions and most donations from individuals.** **7. Of the £5,000 remaining loan to the Scouts & Guides a repayment of £2,500 was received in November 2020. The final £2,500 was written off by the Trust.** **8. In addition to small grants given to local organisations and projects, the Trust paid £30,778 towards the completion of the playground (£15,778 from funds collected in previous years plus an additional grant of £15,000 from the Trust - see Note 2), £2,890 for various benches around the village (mostly donated by individuals and the churches), £1,258 to finish the herb garden, £1,378 for Library furniture (from the specific funds held for that purpose).** **9. The 2021 duck race could not take place due to adverse weather but tickets were sold and the winning ducks drawn from a hat. The 2020 duck race was cancelled due to Covid.** **10. Drainage work on the Scalebor playing field is undertaken annually to maintain the playing surface for junior sport and public use.** **11. The Roundhouse Garden was refurbished with funds from the Trust, Parish Council, Burley Festival and Burley Gardeners with help from the Grange Park gardeners.** **12. The tubs and hanging baskets in the centre of the village are provided with the help of funding from the Parish Council and are planted and maintained by Tom Sumner, Ghyll Royd School and other volunteers.** ## **13. Development of the village website and diary continues and we thank Malcom Fisher for his help and support.** **14. BWCT has committed to support the following projects, among others; Walking with Wheels (£5,000), Youthquake (£3,000 towards training) and the development of a village map (up to £2,500).** **15. Pavilion costs were higher in 2020 due to redecorating and the installatioin of CCTV.** **16. The Trust is currently proceeding with an agreed merger with Burley Educational Trust and is in final legal arrangements with the Charities Commission.** **This will result in additional funds which will be available for initiatives of an educational nature in Burley.** **17. Income is disclosed net of the fees the Trust pays for the use of various platforms to collect payments.
