**Denmead War Memorial Hall Hambledon Road** **Hampshire PO7 6PW** **Registered Charity No 1098789** ## **Annual Report of Denmead War Memorial Hall Management Committee for 2022** As a committee we are happy to report that the Hall continues to provide a valued resource to the residents of Denmead as intended by the original trustees. It is the venue for a number of regular and occasional hirers with educational, sporting and social activities for villagers. We are mindful that the viability of the Hall depends on continued parking facilities and disabled access. For this we depend on the adjacent land owned on behalf of the community by Denmead Parish Council. The last year has been tough for many individuals and groups with rising inflation and the cost of energy. In view of this we have curbed some projects and increased our reserve for essential maintenance and repairs. One major cost has been the use of contract cleaners this year. However the convenience and standard has been very good. Another significant cost this year was the purchase of a smart external noticeboard for the front of the Hall for our publicity and to display details of regular groups and committee contact numbers. We also installed outside lighting set to a timer, as hall users reported to us that the carpark was very dark when leaving the building in the evenings, particularly in the winter. I want to express my thanks to the whole committee for their efforts to maintain the Hall as a safe and attractive environment. We meet for a big summer cleaning day to refresh and tackle major tasks both inside the hall and in the adjoining outside area, to the front and right hand side of the hall. Members of the committee also regularly carry out smaller maintenance and repair jobs as they arise or are reported on at monthly committee meetings. We hire tradesmen to complete larger necessary work that the committee are unable to do ourselves. After the pandemic the bookings at the hall have gradually returned to pre-covid levels of hire, although sadly we have lost a couple of regular users that did not restart their groups. The hall is booked every evening except Mondays and we have had a steady stream of requests to use the hall for private parties at the weekends. The pre-school use the hall Monday – Friday until 3pm but there is still space for after school clubs during the weekdays. The committee organised and hosted another free ‘save a life’ course for the local residents to attend. These courses are run by Meon Valley Heartstart who are a registered charity that started in 2001 and with their team of volunteers run the course which covers using a defibrillator, giving CPR and how to deal with choking or heavy bleeding. It is a fun and informative evening with a chance to practice using defibrillators on dummys. We first invited Meon Valley Heartstart to run courses at Denmead War Memorial hall in 2018 when we had a defibrillator installed and realised many people did not feel confident to actually use it in an emergency, the course has since been a regular organised event by the committee. The free courses are advertised on Facebook and on posters around the village and are always fully booked. The next course will be advertised soon. There are various projects we would like to complete, as some parts of the building are beginning to show their age. These include refitting the toilets and kitchen areas and we would also like to lay a new paved surface on the land to the right and front of the hall, this will tidy it up and improve the appearance of the hall. Obviously, these are all pending fundraising or grants but the committee will be looking into these in the coming months. My particular thanks go to: David Nicholls has the key role of treasurer, and also undertakes and organises most practical repairs. John Marks, former secretary, who has now stepped back and Jackie O’Halloran is now our secretary, she also maintains our social media presence . Sue Thomas, booking secretary, who handles all bookings and manages the busy diary. We appreciate the continued legal support of Biscoes solicitors on a pro bono basis.
