## **Reports – Activities, Outreach and Community Support Vision** 

Our vision to be a loving and encouraging, inclusive fellowship of _‘real people’_ trying to be _‘real Christians’_ has not changed. We continue to reach out to those who do not yet know Jesus by demonstrating our faith in the most positive ways we can, and by our actions. 

## **Prayer** 

Grapevine encourages everyone to pray as part of their spiritual disciplines and to be part of prayer in the church. Weekly prayer meetings run every Saturday morning. There are also other opportunities to join other regular prayer meetings and to be part of our prayer chain organised by Alice Allsworth _._ Prayer points for the church can also be sent to the team led by Pat Matthews. Prayer days are also organised regularly. 

## **Sunday Clubs – The Shed & Creche** 

Grapevine runs provision for children from toddlers to teens every week. We have age-appropriate Bible teaching and activities related to a theme. All are actively involved with the adults through the worship and taking part in the services. _Sue Smith._ 

## **Down the Line – Sunday Group** 

Down The Line is a Sunday morning group for older children and teenagers. We have six leaders on rotation who help with delivery. We look at subjects and issues that are relevant to the children's lives, always relating them to biblical teaching. _Tim and Mel Smyth_ 

## **Youth Group – Buddies 7-11s** 

Our mid-week youth group session is set around a weekly Christian theme, followed by lively games and crafts. It is always energy filled. Thanks to all the helpers who have led and participated in the activities along with the youngsters themselves. _Elaine Marks_ 

## **GV Youth** 

GV Youth runs each Friday evening for children over 11 years of age. Activities include crafts and games. We have a good rapport with the children attending and try to encourage them to converse with us about the things going on in their lives! _Tim Smyth_

## **Little Lambs Toddler Group** 

Many parents, grandparents and carers have enjoyed a peaceful atmosphere when they come to the group on Monday mornings. They hear a simple Bible story, join in with kids praise songs and do a related craft activity. Between 16 and 30 children enjoy a healthy snack each week while their carers have coffee or tea. It is lovely to see friendships made. _Julie Waterman_ 

## **Pips Toddler Group** 

This year we have seen new toddlers with their mums and quite a few dads which is nice. We continue to serve tea coffee and snacks for the children - everything is free. Numbers have been mostly in the twenties, but for our Christmas party we served thirty-four children. We always have free play, craft and a singing session. _Jan Uttridge_ 

## **Momentum Music** 

Momentum Music runs midweek. It’s a place where people can meet to practice music. Anyone who is keen on music can attend and simply have a go. _Tim Smyth_ 

## **Children’s Holiday Club** 

This year’s Holiday Club was called _Yee Haw –_ a wild west adventure. We adapted the set designed by Tex Uttridge and it proved to be a fun week. A big Thank You to Mike Thorne for all his amazing, innovative props and sets. The children joined in all the dramas, games, craft activities and songs. Big Thanks to everyone who helped run the programme and gave up their precious time. _Elaine Marks_ 

## **Bible Study Home groups** 

Four mid-week homegroups explore relevant bible study topics and support our pastoral care. Participants say they really enjoy these meetings. We use a range of study resources and authors for the sessions. _Ade Marks_ 

## **Vinecrafts** 

This is a thriving and growing group which meets weekly where participants bring along a wide variety of personal crafts to work on. This year we organised a very successful Christmas Fayre which raised funds for local charities. The group also helped make the knitted angels which are distributed every Christmas. _Kate Shaw & Maggie Eastman_ 

## **Open Doors – Coffee mornings** 

The Friday Coffee morning offers refreshments and activities. It includes book swaps, quizzes and daily papers. There is no charge, but donations are welcome for Cancer Research. This is a warm welcoming space to all in the community. We collaborate with Cornwall College offering work experience placements for special needs students. _Sue Smith_ 

## **Grapevine Cycle group** 

The cycle group is supported by a dedicated group of participants. Every Saturday we try and cycle to a different place. All the cyclists learn basic bike maintenance and carry spares with them. It’s a popular weekly social event as we visit different venues on the way for refreshments. _Mike Thorne_ 

## **Joy Movement and worship group** 

Participants can join in dance or movement along to worship music on Saturday mornings by arrangement. Thanks to Amber Barry and Kate Shaw who organise the sessions. 

## **Social events** 

Grapevine continues to look for ways to develop fellowship and build community through social events. Our craft mornings (Christmas and Easter), picnics, treasure trails, music nights, pastoral team meals, walking _,_ cycling and crafts all continue _._ We continue to explore other ways to do more. This year homegroup members have successfully started a number of informal lunch gatherings to promote unity and fellowship.

## **Christmas and Easter Craft mornings** 

Our Christmas and Easter craft mornings were very popular and drew people from the community together. Thanks to all who provide their time, commitment and creativity to these annual outreach activities. Thanks to _Julie Waterman_ who is the inspiration behind them. 

## **Christmas cards and Christmas services** 

Christmas postcards and publicity leaflets were distributed as part of our seasonal outreach as usual. We offered a full range of services over the Christmas period for everyone, including Christmas day, which we love. _Ade Marks_ 

## **Grapevine Hoop Group** 

This group ran on Monday evenings providing free sessions for exercise and movement. _Maria Ashton_ . 

## **Outreach** 

Grapevine supports as many outreach programmes as possible. We are always working hard to develop materials to use as part of local evangelism. Much of our outreach work focuses on young people and children during the week through a range of groups and during the summer via the annual Holiday Clubs. _Ade Marks_ 

## **Grapevine Christmas Angels** 

A group of dedicated Church members knit up to 1000 angels each year and distribute them with an attached festive message at Christmas. This proves to be very popular and is appreciated by the local community. _Sue Smith_ 

## **Alpha 2023** 

An Alpha course started in June 2023 with 6 participants. This was an exciting and worthwhile programme of exploration. All members started a new homegroup on completion. This was run by Christine and Mick Butcher. 

## **Gift bags** 

We continue to give out our gift bags to people in need. This includes new mums with babies who attend the toddler groups or are known to church members, or anyone who would benefit. Feedback from recipients is always positive. We encourage everyone to continue supplying treats such as sweets, chocolates and biscuits for the bags. _Nic Bentley_ 

## **Pastoral teams** 

Grapevine has an established and growing pastoral team. Pastoral leaders provide continual support within the church. Leaders note that it is a truly positive experience getting to know more people on a personal basis and to pray for them. _Nic Bentley_ 

## **Hardship Fund** 

Grapevine continues to maintain and offer local support from a self-generated hardship fund. We will keep on distributing this to any worthy causes as long as we can. The hardship fund donations are changing lives. _Ade Marks_ 

## **Teaching and Preaching** 

The preaching and teaching lead is taken by the pastors, with help from occasional speakers. Systematic preaching of a linked series of teaching talks forms the main basis of biblical teaching, primarily delivered on Sundays.

## **Worship and music** 

We are always looking to encourage our musicians in worship, add more instruments, and practice to enhance the worship experience. Songs used in worship are reported regularly online to CCLI (Christian Copyright Licensing International) - we are a member of their Song Select resource. 

## **Publicity / Newsletter / Noticeboard** 

News and events are announced on our Facebook pages and website. A weekly Newsletter is produced by Elaine Marks complemented by weekly PowerPoint notice presentations at Sunday services. Newsletters are issued every week and posted online on our Facebook page. The exterior noticeboard at the main entrance continues to be an excellent resource to publicise the work of the church. Additional internal noticeboards are used to inform church members of events and to provide team details. 

## **Reviews and reports** 

Some of our church activities are reported in the West Briton, when possible, by Sue Smith. Sue also contributes articles to the quarterly Illogan Review, publicising a range of our community focused activities in the local area. 

## **Website** 

The website is a professionally designed site accommodating latest news, events, and updates. Thanks to Alan Bentley for his work maintaining and updating the site. The website address is: _grapevinecommunitychurch.org_ 

## **Facebook pages** 

Grapevine Community Church has a general Facebook page where events are publicised and shared. We also have a closed group Grapevine News Facebook page and others with specific interest target groups - kids and youth, the annual Holiday Club, Toddler group and Grapevine Community Church Rocks plus Grapevine Community Church Angels. 

## **Media presentation – Livestreaming and song projection** 

The church’s public address and song projection system is used each week. This is backed by a Wi-Fi router which helps groups access the internet both in the main church and adjoining rooms. We livestream our worship services via Facebook and load them onto YouTube. Livestreaming helps us to reach more people including folks in Canada and Australia. Thanks to John Matthews, Alan Bentley, and Tim Smyth for heading this up along with Reuben Bentley, Isaac Bentley and Tracy Holmes. The technical support team uses a What’s App group to keep in touch. They have worked tirelessly to maintain and improve the system. 

## **Health and Safety, Buildings and Maintenance** 

We have a dedicated DIY team working each week to maintain and improve the building. Thanks to Dave Eastman and Tracy Holmes, for this. The building was affected by severe condensation in the autumn of 2023, possibly associated with a failing boiler. The team supplied two new dehumidifiers to control it - a new boiler was purchased and commissioned in November 2023. Thanks to Jon Eastman for fitting and supplying the new boiler. 

Fire safety checks continue with the emphasis on clear access and emergency lighting being maintained in working order. The fire extinguishers are always checked and certificated annually. This past year has again been a safe year. However, vigilance is always required by all church members. This is to ensure that we keep each other safe by adhering to appropriate guidance and keeping all areas in a safe condition. Anyone unsure about a health and safety issue or requires help with risk assessments is asked to contact the leadership team or trustees. In order to maintain external security and to help with parking issues outside the church we continue to use a basic CCTV security system at the front of the building.

## **Health and Safety, Buildings and Maintenance (continued)** 

The building has been affected by some underfloor smells this year. These odours have been checked by our local gas supply company and the building is safe. It was due to dead rodents under the floor. The team successfully implemented measures to alleviate this. 

## **First Aid Training** 

The last First Aid course was offered in November 2021 and qualifications will be updated in November 2024. 

## **Cleaning** 

Regular cleaning mornings take place, along with the weekly cleaning to keep on top of the building, when possible. Thanks to Jan Uttridge and all those who volunteer to help. 

## **Safeguarding – Vulnerable Adults and Child Protection** 

We take the safety and welfare of vulnerable and young people very seriously. We have our own Safeguarding Policy and operate under the umbrella of _Thirtyone:eight_ (formerly the ‘Churches Child Protection Agency Service’ - CCPAS). Our Safeguarding Policy is available for inspection as well as the accompanying guidance booklet - Children’s Workers Pocket Guide _._ Ade Marks and Richard Waterman have responsibility for this. We are regularly informed by _Thirytone:eight_ of any updates. 

All volunteers who work with young people and vulnerable adults are asked to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and to participate in any training offered by the church and through _Thirtyone:eight_ . Workers are also asked to familiarise themselves with the church’s Safeguarding policy and guidance. By following good practice, we all work together to safeguard any children and vulnerable adults in our care. Any additional training can be provided on request. We have a significant number of the church covered by DBS checks. Thanks to Richard Waterman for leading this. 

## **Equal opportunities statement** 

In order to protect members of Grapevine, participants in community activities, and volunteers or employees, Grapevine has an Equal Opportunities statement which is available for review. The statement is based on a model supplied by _Thirtyone:eight._ 

## **Policies and procedures - Updates** 

Grapevine’s policies and procedures are updated in response to any changing national legislation and to standardise the format of presentation. In 2020, an updated Health and Safety Risk Assessment was introduced in response to government guidance on Coronavirus (Covid 19).  Our Fire safety actions and procedures were updated significantly in 2021. A significant number of policies associated with risk were updated this year 2023 following recommendations to charities advised by guidance supplied by the Charity Commission. Grapevine used the proformas in the Standard Policy Pack for Churches and Charities supplied by Stewardship. Thanks to all the trustees for assisting with this demanding process. 

## **Office** 

The office for Grapevine Community Church is based at 1 Glenfeadon Terrace in Portreath due to lack of space at the church. It is supported by a telephone, photocopier, printer, computers and some storage space. Our e-mail address is: gccoffice@btinternet.com and landline telephone number 01209 842213.

## **Treasurer’s Financial Review** 

The independently examined accounts for the year 2023-24 are attached. The received income was £59,283 which was a 19%   increase on the previous year.  The majority of the income comes from regular giving either via Stewardship or direct payments by bank transfer.  Outgoings at £50,591 were 23% up on the previous year.   (Major one-off expenses were a new boiler, and a new external door and ramp). The reserves therefore increased and stood at £30,623.  The Hardship Fund was well used and payments of £3,850 were made and at the end of the year the Hardship Fund stood at £950. _Richard Waterman_ 

## **Leadership Team** 

The Leadership team includes Ade and Elaine Marks (Co-pastors) with Alan and Nichola Bentley (Assistant Pastors). The team meets to discuss and pray about the challenges and direction of church, to encourage and to share vision and strategy ideas. 

## **Networking, mission and support** 

The activities of the church must always extend beyond our local area. We are pleased to be associated with several local, national and international contacts. We are always delighted to maintain working contact with other churches in the area. We also value the input of our visitors on a regular basis. Grapevine continues to develop links with other churches and associated Christian organisations. 

## **Local Leadership Prayer and Fellowship** 

The leadership team participates in prayer and fellowship meetings with other local church leaders and churches when possible. This is a good way of moving together in unity of spirit and purpose. Grapevine is also regularly invited to participate in monthly Prayer & Share meetings. 

## **Trustees** 

The church is a registered charity with appointed trustees. They are Alan Bentley, Richard Waterman (treasurer), Alice Allsworth (chairperson and secretary) **,** David Eastman and Nichola Bentley. Thanks once again for all your ongoing hard work, continued support and creativity. 

## **Sharing the Gospel / Mission** 

Our challenge is to always keep reviewing outreach and to demonstrate the gospel in action. This is the way people will be drawn towards God’s heart.  How can we reach out more? What else can we do to fulfil our mission for the next year? God gives us the gifts and abilities - we must continue to use them for His glory, and we can learn more! As part of the desire to reach out to people and show the love of God in action we still choose not to charge for activities or refreshments. This is to make every activity available to all irrespective of means. Of course, anyone can donate to the work of the church if they wish to.

## **INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S REPORT ON THE ACCOUNTS** 

Report to the trustees of Grapevine Community Church on the annual accounts for the year ended 30th of June 2024 set out on pages 12 to 16. 

## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner** 

The trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year (under section 144(2)) of the Charities Act 2011 (the Act), and that an independent examination is needed. It is my responsibility to: 

- examine the accounts (under section 145 of the Act), 

- to follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 145 (5)(b) of the Act), and 

- to state whether particular matters have come to my attention. 

## **Basis of independent examiner's statement** 

My examination was carried out in accordance with General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the organisation and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a 'true and fair view' and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention 

1. which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in, any material respect, the trustees requirements: 

   - to keep accounting records in accordance with section s.130 of the Act; and 

   - to prepare accounts which accord with these accounting records have not been met; or 

2. to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

## **4. RESTRICTED FUNDS** 

The Church has begun a restricted Hardship fund to follow one of its objects - namely the relief of persons who are in conditions of need, hardship or distress, or are aged or sick and to relieve the distress caused thereby in the said location and in such other parts of the United Kingdom or the World as the trustees from time to time may think fit.

The Church has one employee: Mr Adrian Marks - employed from 1st Nov 2016. No employee received emoluments in excess of £60,000 and staff were paid through the PAYE system.

## **6. PAYMENTS TO AND FROM TRUSTEES** 

No payments were made to trustees or any persons connected with them during this financial period. No other material transaction took place between the organisation and a trustee or any person connected with them. 

All the trustees are church members and give via the weekly offerings or via Stewardship. 

## **7. RISK ASSESSMENT** 

The Trustees actively review the major risks which the charity faces on a regular basis and believe that maintaining the free reserves stated, combined with the annual review of the controls over key financial systems carried out on an annual basis will provide sufficient resources in the event of adverse conditions. The Trustees have also examined other operational and business risks which they face and confirm that they have established systems to mitigate the significant risks. 

## **8. RESERVES POLICY** 

The Trustees have considered the level of reserves they wish to retain, appropriate to the charity's needs. This is based on the charity's size and the level of financial commitments held. The Trustees aim to ensure the charity will be able to continue to fulfil its charitable objectives even if there is a temporary shortfall in income or unexpected expenditure. The Trustees will endeavour not to set aside funds unnecessarily. 

## **9. PUBLIC BENEFIT** 

The charity acknowledges its requirement to demonstrate clearly that it must have charitable purposes or ‘aims’ that are for the public benefit. Details of how the charity has achieved this are provided in the Trustees report. The Trustees confirm that they have paid due regard to the Charity Commission guidance on public benefit before deciding what activities the charity should undertake.
