Light at the end of the tunnel

As we move into late 2021 the world appears to be in a different place. The impacts of the Coronavirus pandemic are all around. Social distancing, restrictions on meeting and national lockdowns have all left their marks. We appear to be in a new place, sometimes driven by fear, nervousness and never-ending uncertainty. So, what does this mean for us? It means that a church driven by faith and living in the hope of seeing more of God’s future grace and favour is even more necessary, even more relevant. We can’t stop now!

We still desire to be that place where people can find real love, hope and direction, because they have met with the living God. We have our doors open for anyone who wants to come along. We’ve tried to be as creative as we can to engage with anyone we could, by sharing our services online, putting music, talks, kids’ activities and testimonies on our Facebook pages, by just saying ‘Hello’ and helping out financially for those in desperate need. We’ve prayed hard, met and chatted when we could, gone out on the streets when it was possible, developed our online skills, and kept going as church. We still want to share the good news!

It’s time now to lead from the front and to declare that through faith in Jesus, hope is still here, it never goes away, life can have meaning, there is a place where you can make friends, be yourself, recover and grow. Isn’t that what church is?

As pastors it’s sad to see that some are not prepared to re-engage and now want to do other things instead of being part of church, so we bless you as you depart on your new journey, but we’re staying here . We’re going to try and live out the vision the Lord has given us, here in Illogan.

So, to all those who have worked tirelessly in the background through this difficult year, those who have prayed, given resources, pushed forward and never lost hope, ‘Thank You!’ This is the type of team we want to be part of – this is what church is. Thanks for keeping in contact, thanks for sending the cards, or making telephone calls, or visiting, or praying, or encouraging. You are the salt of the earth. These actions speak loudly.

People are still isolated, vulnerable, depressed and so full of fear and this isn’t going to change quickly. So, as we always say, let’s keep on communicating and encouraging. Let’s keep loving the broken hearted, the lonely, the lost, and those who are just feeling left out. Let’s share our faith when we can. We are still blessed to be ministering those around us spreading the good news of the gospel. Please keep pointing people to the one who saves. A Big Thank You for your part in Grapevine this year. Church is great when we move forward together and we never take our eyes off Jesus. Let’s enjoy the journey no matter how difficult the journey may be.

Together we can bring the love of Jesus to everyone we meet, because we have received the greatest gift anyone can have. Jesus is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow; He keeps changing hearts and lives and will always do so. There is light at the end of the tunnel for every one of us.

Reports – Activities, Outreach and Community Support

Vision

Our vision to be a loving and encouraging, inclusive fellowship of ‘real people’ trying to be ‘real Christians’ has not changed. We aim to reach out to those who do not yet know Jesus by demonstrating our faith in the most positive ways we can, by our actions. We’ve tried our best to do this in 2021 despite all the barriers and limitations. Our mission is still to outreach to those who do not know the love of God and to be His hands and feet in this area. Our challenge for 2021 has been to communicate our support, blessings and encouragement to as many people as possible in our local community in as many new creative ways as we can. And now we have both the physical presence alongside a growing online one, where the Gospel can be shared.

The Coronavirus legacy and challenge

Since March 2020 every church was confronted by the challenges of a national lockdown in response to the worsening Coronavirus global pandemic. Reacting to the government’s advice and guidance on how to minimise the risk of spreading the disease, Grapevine closed its physical space and we looked at how we could best communicate with our congregation and community and support them as well. It has been a difficult time, but we’ve come through.

During the pandemic the leadership team followed and implemented any government advice, guidance and updates on Covid 19. We maintained and applied an updated Health and Safety Risk Assessment and made sure that the building was always safe for church membership and visitors, for the resumption of services and community activities.

As services and activities resumed in the latter part of 2021, we have made every effort to maintain appropriate safety procedures and to keep in contact with those who cannot physically attend. Even though restrictions have been relieved we still maintain some of the introduced health and safety procedures, such as the use of hand sanitisers.

Innovative communication

We worked hard and creatively to establish regular communication with as many people as we could by using internet platforms like Zoom, Facetime, Facebook and YouTube during 2020/21. Worship services, when allowed, were recorded or shown livestreamed on Facebook. Our pastoral teams made great efforts to keep in touch with church members and people in the local community. It has continued to be a steep learning curve, but well worth all the effort. Thanks to John Matthews, Alan Bentley, Tim Smyth and Tracy Holmes for all the super technical support. During lockdowns we also introduced regular Zoom chat meetings every Sunday evening for those who are house bound. These are hosted by John and Pat Matthews and continue. Pat Matthews

Hardship Fund

In recognition of some of the financial difficulties which local people are facing we have raised a hardship fund by donation within the church to which people can apply. The application process is quick, simple and informal. We will keep on distributing this to any worthy causes as long as we can. Around £6000 was issued in 2020/21. The hardship fund is still in operation and is changing lives. Feedback received on the impact of the distribution of this fund is incredibly positive. Ade Marks

Prayer

Grapevine has always encouraged everyone to pray as part of their spiritual disciplines and to be part of prayer in the church. We need to keep praying. Any prayer requests are followed up or requested through our text-based prayer chain run by Alice Allsworth or sent in on our prayer cards. There are opportunities to join regular prayer meetings and be part of our prayer chain. Our prayer meeting runs on early Saturday mornings. As part of our outreach initiative, we also offer ‘Say one for me’ prayer cards to the local community. These can be used to return personalised prayer requests. Pat Matthews started a home-based prayer initiative in 2020/21 where prayer points received from the pastors can be distributed online and shared amongst the team. We hope to develop this more in 2021 by sharing our prayers from the Saturday morning prayer times.

Sunday Clubs – The Potting Shed & Creche

The Sunday Club provision from January to March 2021 was moved online onto our Grapevine Church Kids Facebook page where children and parents could access the activities. This material consisted of Bible story videos, craft ideas and songs. At Easter, all children connected with the church were sent Easter eggs and Easter craft activities.

On returning from lockdown in April 2021, the Church was able to provide provision for children to meet in two socially distanced grounds every Sunday. With an average number of 7-10 children attending. The Under 4s met in the side room under the leadership of Anne Cracknell . Sue Smith

Down the Line – Sunday Group

This group ran every Sunday and was attended by a small group of teenagers. Unfortunately, as a result of lockdowns

Little Lambs – Toddler Church

Little Lambs runs each Monday morning during term time and is led by Jan Uttridge and Julie Waterman . Each week the children join in singing, they sit for a short time to hear a bible story before doing a craft activity, and then they play. We have 17 children who can attend. Little Lambs closed during the lockdown periods but is planned to restart in November 2021. Julie Waterman

Splash Youth Group 4-7s

Splash is a youth group which runs for small children on Mondays after school and proves to be popular with up to 12 children attending. Attendance was maintained until lockdown restrictions were imposed in March 2020. We try to keep in contact with our younger children and parents via a Kids’ Facebook page. Youth Group – Buddies 7-11s

Usually, our mid-week youth group session is set around a weekly Christian theme, but this year they have been on hold. Sessions will start again in September 2021. Thanks to the helpers – Ade Marks and Kate Shaw , who have led and participated in all the activities along with the youngsters themselves when sessions ran. Elaine Marks

Pips Toddler Group

Pips has been open whenever possible to support our parents and carers. We did the usual things, free play, singing and craft, plus the toast and biscuits which the children always enjoy. Our numbers usually range between 10 and 20. We had stop meeting during the lockdowns but opened as soon as we could with a place booking system and the appropriate health and safety hygiene measures in place. We kept in touch with parents and children through regular posts on Facebook. Jan Uttridge

Momentum

The Momentum Youth Group was interrupted by the lockdowns in 2020 /21 but recently adapted into a youth band, call Momentum Music. We have 8 young people attending. The aim of the group is to provide a place for teenagers to play music in a relaxed environment. We play both secular and non-secular music and have refreshments during a break time. The leaders are Tim Smyth, Alan Bentley and Peta Redmore. If leaders can be found we will be looking to reintroduce the full Momentum Youth group when feasible. Tim Smyth

Activate Drama and Dance Group

This group meets once a month for children from 5 years old but was put on hold from March 2020 due to the lockdowns. Sue Smith and Kate Shaw run the sessions. Sue Smith & Kate Shaw

Children’s Holiday Club

Sadly, in 2020 and 2021 our popular Holiday Clubs had to be abandoned as a product of the Covid 19 lockdown rules but children were offered a variety of online resources and sites to explore by Sue Smith through our Facebook pages. We plan to reintroduce the Holiday Club in summer 2022. Elaine Marks

Bible Study Home groups

Three mid-week homegroups continue to support the development of our pastoral care and to explore relevant, practical study topics. Participants really enjoy these meetings. For most of 2020/21 Homegroups operated via the Zoom platform in response to the need to socially isolate in line with government guidelines. Even with the limitations of not being able to meet physically, fellowship, discussion and prayer still took place. We use a range of study resources for the sessions by well-known authors. All attending participated in interesting and thoughtful discussions

Vinecrafts

Vinecrafts is there for anyone interested in crafts and art. It’s been popular with people from Grapevine joining in with others who do not regularly attend church. During lockdowns we held weekly zoom meetings where we could chat and share what we had been crafting.

When we were able to come back in the church, we followed the relevant government guidelines. Our numbers have grown significantly over the year. We have a lovely group of people who come with their carers offering a safe friendly atmosphere. We are now staying on longer for those that would like to bring a packed lunch. We are planning a Christmas fayre in November for a local charity. Sessions are free with refreshments. About 15 attend.

Exalt Dance

The Exalt Dance Group usually meets on the first Saturday of every month for fellowship, dance and movement. It is affiliated to the Christian Dance Fellowship of Britain and is open to anyone who enjoys praising and worship God with movement and dance. This had to close during 2020/21. Sue Smith

Open Doors – Coffee mornings

Our coffee mornings were well attended, sometimes up to 25 visitors, and are always great fun. In March 2020 the enforced lockdown meant that we had to alter our approach. Regular meetings were offered to those who attend on the Zoom platform. For those who were not able to use Zoom we have been in touch via telephone calls and personal visits, using appropriate social distancing, to keep in touch. Socially distanced coffee mornings were reintroduced after the second lockdown and were popular. We look forward to seeing attendance grow later in 2021. Margaret Waters

Grapevine Cycle group

The cycle group is supported by a dedicated group of participants. Each week we try and cycle to a different place. All the cyclists learn basic bike maintenance and carry spares with them. It is a popular weekly social event as we visit different venues on the way for refreshments. The group also has its own Facebook page. The group was on hold during the lockdown periods but will restart in late 2021. Mike Thorne

Social events

Grapevine continues to look for ways to develop fellowship and build community – this includes organised social events. Our craft mornings (Christmas and Easter), picnics, scavenger hunt picnics, treasure trails, music and meal nights, beach trips, pastoral team meals , walking , cycling and crafts have all been limited in 2020/21 . We continue to explore other ways we can do more. Ade Marks

Christmas and Easter Craft mornings

We were not able to run our Christmas and Easter craft mornings during 2020/21 due to lockdowns, but Easter eggs were distributed to families personally. Thanks to all who provide their time, commitment and creativity to these annual outreach activities. Thanks also to Julie Waterman who is the inspiration behind them.

Christmas cards and services

This year over 1500 Christmas cards and publicity leaflets were distributed in Illogan as part of our outreach. Thanks to everyone who delivered the cards to send the good news message out, especially during these times. As usual we made every effort to maintain a full range of services over the Christmas period for everyone, including Christmas day, and delivered them online.

Outreach

Grapevine supports as many outreach programmes as possible. We are always working hard to develop support materials to use as part of local evangelism. We offer the building to community groups when appropriate, for example, a local choir group use it for their committee meetings. Much of our outreach work focuses on young people and children during the week through a range of groups and during the summer via the annual Holiday Clubs. This year we distributed postcards to most of Illogan letting the community know that we are there to help and we blessed the people we met along the way. We also did some litter picking as part of this outreach. We pray for more productive conversations. Sometimes the best support we can offer is to listen, chat and let people tell their stories. The Grapevine Community Church Rocks outreach still operates and has an accompanying Facebook page. Painted pebbles with encouraging messages and scriptures are randomly distributed to bless people when they find them. They can keep, post or re-hide them. This was restricted during the lockdowns.

For Christmas 2020, knitted angels were distributed. Each includes a blessing and words of encouragement. This worked very well. Grapevine Community Church has an Angels Facebook page to support this. Thanks to Sue Smith for leading this.

During the latter part of 2020 and in early 2021 we tried to outreach more using our website and Facebook pages. Uplifting talks and the sharing of live services has been part of our strategy. In 2021 we ran a successful online Alpha course for ten people which proved to be popular and a worthwhile experience. We will be looking at running another course online.

Gift bags

We continue to give out our gift bags to people in need. This includes new mums with babies who used to attend the toddler groups or are known to church members. Feedback from recipients is always positive. We encourage everyone to continue supplying treats such as sweets, chocolates and biscuits for the bags. Pastoral teams

Grapevine has an established pastoral team. Pastoral leaders provide continual appropriate pastoral support within the church. During the lockdowns this has proven to be a most important form of communication and a platform for encouragement. Leaders report that it has been a positive experience getting to know more people on a personal basis and to pray for them. Thanks to everyone working hard on this team. Nic Bentley

Teaching and Preaching

The preaching and teaching lead is taken by the pastors, with help from the assistant pastors and occasional speakers. Systematic preaching of a linked series of teaching talks forms the main basis of biblical teaching, primarily delivered on Sundays. This is complimented by additional bible studies at the homegroups. During the lockdowns preaching and teaching was moved online using recorded talks distributed through our Facebook pages. In 2021 most talks were delivered through livestreamed services.

Worship and music

The worship team met every month to pray and practice new songs except during lockdowns in 2020/21. This has been helpful in developing our repertoire, building teamwork and enhancing confidence. We are always looking to encourage our musicians in worship, add more instruments, and develop the use of music pads to enhance the worship experience. Songs used in worship are reported regularly online to CCLI (Christian Copyright Licensing International) - we are also a member of their Song Select resource.

Publicity / Newsletter

News and events for 2020/21 were announced on our website and Facebook pages. We also advertise Christmas and holiday events each year through the distribution of the Grapevine Christmas cards and publicity leaflets. Prior to 2020 we had a weekly new Newsletter designed and produced by Elaine Marks and complemented by weekly PowerPoint notice presentations at Sunday services and updates using Facebook. These will be reintroduced in September 2021.

Noticeboard publicity

The exterior noticeboard at the main entrance continues to be an excellent resource to publicise the work of the church. Additional internal noticeboards are used to inform church members of events and to provide team details.

Reviews and reports

The activities of the church were reported weekly in the West Briton by Sue Smith but this stopped in 2020/21. Sue also contributes articles to the quarterly Illogan Review, publicising a range of community focused activities in the local area.

Website

The website is a professionally designed site accommodating latest news, events, and updates. Thanks to Alan Bentley for his work maintaining the site. This will continue to publicise the presence of the church, linking content to all our Facebook pages. The website address is: grapevinecommunitychurch.org

Facebook pages

Grapevine Community Church has a general Facebook page where events can be publicised and shared. This is popular and an effective form of outreach and communication. This has been used significantly in 2020/21 to keep in touch with people. We also have a closed group Grapevine News Facebook page and others with specific interest target groups, for example, kids and youth, the annual Holiday Club, Toddler group and Grapevine Community Church Rocks plus Grapevine Community Church Angels. Thanks to everyone who assists with these.

Media presentation – Livestreaming and song projection

The church has a fully functional public address and song projection system used each week. This is also backed by a WiFi router which helps groups access the internet both in the main church and adjoining rooms. The word projection team operated on a very limited rota basis in 2020/21 when services were allowed.

In 2020/21 the team worked hard on expanding communication by introducing live video streams of our worship services, when allowed to take place, through our Grapevine Community Church Facebook page. It has been a steep learning curve but well worth the effort. During the full lockdowns communication was maintained through the use of the Zoom platform and the posting of videos and testimonies online. Whenever possible, the Zoom platform has been used for group activities like Homegroups, prayer times and our coffee mornings. Thanks to Nic Bentley, Reuben Bentley Isaac Bentley and Fin Barber for all their invaluable help.

Livestreaming has helped us to reach more people and is growing slowly. It provides observers with an opportunity to participate by sharing comments. It’s also proving to be a good vehicle for reaching out. Thanks to John Matthews, Alan Bentley, and Tim Smyth for heading this up with help from Tracy Holmes and all their technical support in developing this.

Health and Safety, Buildings and Maintenance

Building maintenance always remains a challenge, especially during the last year. We do our best to keep on top of things according to the funding available. We have a dedicated DIY team working each week to maintain and improve the building. Thanks to Dave Eastman, Tracy Holmes, and John Matthews for this. DIY support work restarted in late summer 2020 after lockdown one, and again in 2021 after lockdown two.

In Autumn 2019 Grapevine investigated the possibility of building two more rooms on the upper deck to accommodate existing outreach and community work. We are still desperate for more space. We also reviewed expanding the stage area to provide more storage. This work was put on hold for most of 2020/21 as a product of lockdown restrictions, but grant applications started in early 2021.

Fire safety checks have been going on throughout the year with the emphasis on clear access and emergency lighting being maintained in working order. The fire extinguishers are always checked and certificated annually. This past year has again been a safe year. However, vigilance is always required by all church members. This is to ensure that we keep each other safe by adhering to appropriate guidance and keeping all areas in a safe condition. Anyone unsure about a health and safety issue or requires help with risk assessments is asked to contact the leadership team or trustees.

Our Fire Safety procedures and actions were reviewed and significantly updated in early 2021 by Ade Marks . This included a new external fire risk assessment, improvement in our recording, incorporating new training resources, changing our door keys and door locks to thumbscrews to promote easier and safer exit. Signage was also updated in places. Our health and safety folder was also updated significantly in 2021. Updated online Fire Marshal training will be introduced in September 2021.

Considerable efforts have also gone into making the building safer in 2020/21 in response to changing government guidance and instructions on the impact of Coronavirus. The church followed the recommendations made in a regularly updated Risk Assessment based on the Church of England pro-forma. All trustees have a copy. Visitors registered for

track and trace purposes, used hand sanitisers, wore masks and followed all the required procedures. Sanitisers will remain and some of the recommended safety procedures also. First Aid training to update qualifications is planned for November 2021.

In order to improve external security and to help with developing parking issues outside the church we installed a basic CCTV security system at the front of the building in September 2021. Thanks to John Matthews and Dave Eastman for this.

‘Upper Deck’ new rooms project

Plans for the construction of two new rooms on the upper deck to provide a range of community activity work were put together by Barry Shattock and supported by Dave Eastman . This will be an excellent resource and help with our limited space. It was hard to move further on with the project because of the 2020 lockdowns and the difficulty in acquiring starting quotes for the work. In 2021 we were able to submit grant applications for this project with the assistance of Stephen Potts - Tregease Consultancy. We have secured £6000 grants and pledges towards the project from AllChurches Trust, Alexis Trust, Beatrice Laing Trust, Broadmead Trust, Cassell Trust and are awaiting further responses. We are so grateful for their consideration of this project and willingness to support us in this endeavour. Applications are continuing at the time of writing, but a review will be necessary at the end of the year.

We have also enquired if one of our immediate neighbours may consider selling or leasing part of his garden at the rear of the church for use by the church.

Cleaning

Regular cleaning mornings did take place, along with the weekly cleaning to keep on top of the building, when possible. Thanks to Jan Uttridge and all those volunteering to help. It has been a challenging year for cleaning in 2021 as access to the building was restricted for considerable periods of time and deeper cleaning was extended. Cleaning is now completed on a weekly basis .

Safeguarding – Vulnerable Adults and Child Protection

We take the safety and welfare of vulnerable and young people very seriously. We have our own Safeguarding Policy and operate under the umbrella of Thirtyoneeight (formerly the ‘Churches Child Protection Agency Service’ - CCPAS). Our Safeguarding Policy is available for inspection as well as the accompanying guidance booklet - Children’s Workers Pocket Guide . Ade Marks and Richard Waterman have responsibility this. We are regularly informed by Thirytoneeight of any updates.

All volunteers who work with young people and vulnerable adults are asked to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and to participate in any training offered by the church and through Thirtyoneeight . Workers are also asked to familiarise themselves with the church’s Safeguarding policy and guidance. By following good practice, we all work together to safeguard any children and vulnerable adults in our care. Any additional training can be provided on request. All our volunteer workers are requested to go through our DBS electronic checks as part of updating our safeguarding procedures and practice. We now have over one third of the church covered by DBS checks. Thanks to Richard Waterman for leading this. We did have a couple of Safeguarding reporting incidences to address in 2021 which were handled both effectively and professionally.

An updated safeguarding training session to include assistance from the police is planned for late September 2021 and all participants will be provided with supplementary support materials. Thanks to Alice Allsworth arranging this.

Equal opportunities statement

In order to protect members of Grapevine, participants in community activities, and volunteers or employees, Grapevine has an Equal Opportunities statement which is available for review. The statement is based on a model supplied by Thirtyoneeight.

Policies and procedures - Updates

Grapevine’s policies and procedures are updated in response to any changing national legislation and to standardise the format of presentation. In 2020, a regularly updated Health and Safety Risk Assessment was introduced and is in place in response to changing government guidance on Coronavirus (Covid 19) and the associated lockdowns. Our Fire safety actions and procedures were updated significantly in 2021.

Office

The office for Grapevine Community Church is based at 1 Glenfeadon Terrace in Portreath. It is supported by a telephone, photocopier, printer, two desktop computers, a laptop and some storage space. Our e-mail address is: gccoffice@btinternet.com and telephone number 01209 842213. Thanks to Tracy Holmes for servicing and improving our church laptop performance in 2021.

Treasurer’s report

Fully audited accounts for the year 2020-21 are now available. The figures show income at £37,432 a very small increase on the previous year. Regular income was again lower due to the closure of the church during lockdown but this was offset by some generous one-off giving. Expenditure at £38,154 was also higher than the previous year mainly because of several donations that were made from our Hardship Fund. The reserves stood at £9,351. At the end of the year the Hardship Fund stood at £997 and a £500 grant had been received towards the Upper Room Project.

Leadership Team

The Leadership team includes Ade and Elaine Marks (Co-pastors) plus Alan and Nichola Bentley (Assistant Pastors). The team meets online to discuss and pray about the challenges and direction of church, to encourage and to share vision and strategy ideas. For much of 2021 this was via the Zoom platform as a product of the lockdown restrictions.

Networking and mission support

The activities of the church must always extend beyond our local area. We are pleased to be associated with several local, national and international contacts. We are always delighted to maintain working contact with other churches in the area. We also value the input of our visitors on a regular basis. Grapevine continues to develop links with other churches and associated Christian organisations. Since 2018 Grapevine has been part of the New Wine Leadership Network and we have participated in training with them . Grapevine has also supported our local Foodbank based in Camborne on a regular basis.

Local Leadership Prayer and Fellowship

The leadership team has participated in prayer and fellowship meetings with other local church leaders and this is proving to be a good way of moving together in unity of spirit and purpose. It’s great to see churches praying and working together to share the gospel. Grapevine is also regularly invited to participate in a monthly Prayer & Share online and other informal fraternal meetings with local pastors and leaders.

Trustees

The church is a registered charity and the trustees of the charity are Alan Bentley, Richard Waterman, Alice Allsworth (chairperson and secretary) , and Nichola Bentley . Trustees have met on a regular basis throughout the year via Zoom. Thanks once again for all your hard work, continued support and creativity, especially with the challenges of 2020/21. Sharing the Gospel / Mission

Our challenge is to always keep reviewing outreach and to demonstrate the gospel in action. This is the way people will be drawn towards God’s heart. How can we reach out more? What else can we do to fulfil our mission for the next year? This year, just like the last, has been especially difficult but it has made us review how we communicate the gospel and get the message out. It’s inspired us to be more creative where we can. We’ve explored the live streaming of services, posting talks online, keeping in touch using the Zoom platform, increasing our pastoral telephone calls, as well as using cards and gift bags to help people feel that they are in touch.

With some churches closing around us, it’s a real challenge, but it’s up to us. God gives us the gifts and abilities - we must continue to use them for His glory, and we can learn more! As part of the desire to reach out to people and show the love of God in action we still choose not to charge for activities or refreshments. This is to make every activity available to all irrespective of means. Of course, anyone can donate to the work of the church if they wish to. This year, 2021 is still a challenge, but let’s lead the way and set ourselves the target of being relevant in our culture and showing, through Jesus that everyone can have a New start, new love, new life.

The Church has begun a restricted hardship fund to follow one of its objects - namely the relief of persons who are in conditions of need, hardship or distress, or are aged or sick and to relieve the distress caused thereby in the said location and in such other parts of the United Kingdom or the World as the trustees from time to time may think fit.

6. PAYMENTS TO AND FROM TRUSTEES

No payments were made to trustees or any persons connected with them during this financial period. No other material transaction took place between the organisation and a trustee or any person connected with them.

All the trustees are church memebers and give via the weekly offerings or via Stewardship.

7. RISK ASSESSMENT

The Trustees actively review the major risks which the charity faces on a regular basis and believe that maintaining the free reserves stated, combined with the annual review of the controls over key financial systems carried out on an annual basis will provide sufficient resources in the event of adverse conditions. The Trustees have also examined other operational and business risks which they face and confirm that they have established systems to mitigate the significant risks.

9. RESERVES POLICY

The Trustees have considered the level of reserves they wish to retain, appropriate to the charity's needs. This is based on the charity's size and the level of financial commitments held. The Trustees aim to ensure the charity will be able to continue to fulfil its charitable objectives even if there is a temporary shortfall in income or unexpected expenditure. The Trustees will endeavour not to set aside funds unnecessarily.

10. PUBLIC BENEFIT

The charity acknowledges its requirement to demonstrate clearly that it must have charitable purposes or ‘aims’ that are for the public benefit. Details of how the charity has achieved this are provided in the Trustees report. The Trustees confirm that they have paid due regard to the Charity Commission guidance on public benefit before deciding what activities the charity should undertake.

Report to the trustees/members of Grapevine Community Church on the annual accounts for the year ended 30th June 2021 set out on pages 3 to 7.

The trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year (under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the Act), and that an independent examination is needed.

It is my responsibility to:

examine the accounts (under section 145 of the Act),
to follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 145(5)(b) of the Act, and
to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

Basis of independent examiner's statement

My examination was carried out in accordance with General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the organisation and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a 'true and fair view' and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention

which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in, any material respect, the trustees requirements:
to keep accounting records in accordance with section s.130 of the Act; and
