The Whole Person Health Trust

Registered Charity No. 1098671 Company No. 04386014

The Trustees of Whole Person Health Trust (“WPHT”) present their annual report together with the financial statements for the year ended 31% March 2022 and confirm that the accounts have been prepared in accordance with the charitable company’s governing instrument and relevant statutory requirements. We have adopted the provision of the Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP): Accounting and Reporting by Charities (FRS102).

OBJECTIVES & ACTIVITIES

WPHT’s objects, as defined in its Memorandum and Articles of Association, are:

Principal focus and activities Our principal activities include:

Association of Chaplaincy in General Practice (ACGP)

ACGP (http://acgp.co.uk/) exists to enable chaplaincy to be delivered to recommended national standards in General Practice situations. It does this through promoting awareness of chaplaincy in General Practice, facilitating the setting up of this service within General Practices, and providing advice on training and professional support to those providing chaplaincy. It has a separate management group accountable to the Trustees and two Trustees are members of this group to ensure good accountability and liaison. The management group is chaired by Sarah Giffen, who took over from Fiona Collins during the period. WPHT acknowledges its enormous debt to Fiona for leading ACGP for many years and helping it to become what it is today. ACGP has continued to perform strongly during the period, particularly by providing training for new chaplains

Doctors’ retreats

WPHT also supports twice-yearly retreats for doctors of all ages and professional levels which help to care for their spiritual needs. These have not happened during the current period as Covid-19 restrictions prevented physical meeting and the nature of the retreats does not adapt easily to an online alternative.

The Trust also organises occasional conferences, participates in networks and makes information available. It also supports the development of new projects such as Hummingbird Hope, a charity which is being established in Grenada by one of our Trustees, Dr Hilary Garraway, to establish a retreat house which will offer a therapeutic, spiritual and creative space to facilitate wholeness and wellbeing in body, mind and spirit.

Public benefit

All our charitable activities focus on improving whole person healthcare and are undertaken to further our charitable purposes for the public benefit. The benefit received by them will be passed on to the communities in which our associates work. The Trustees review the public benefit of our activities annually. We have referred to the guidance contained in the Charity Commission’s general guidance on public benefit when reviewing our aim and objectives and in planning our future activities. In particular, the Trustees consider how planned activities will contribute to the aims and objectives they have set.

ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE

We review our aims, objectives and activities regularly, although this year’s activities have understandably been impeded by Covid-19 and also the protracted ill-health of one of the two administrators. FINANCIAL REVIEW Overview Total income of £38,429 represented a significant increase on the previous period (£16,465), driven largely by some generous donations, but also an increase in charitable activities as outlined below. However expenditure was reduced to £13,515 (2020-21 = £19,592) resulting in a surplus for the year of £24,914 (2020-21 = -£3,136). Fully half of this surplus represents restricted giving for Hummingbird Hope, and most of the balance will be applied to ensuring ACGP develops effectively in the coming years.

The Whole Person Health Trust

The year’s activities saw significant fundraising for ACGP and the delivery of the new training programme. Accordingly, ACGP has madea significant surplus which will ensure its ability to thrive into the future.

Significant funds were also received on behalf of Hummingbird Hope, which will be passed on to the charity in due course when it has opened a bank account in Grenada.

Principal funding

Our three principal sources of funding were private donations (£12,050), attendance fees received for the ACGP online training programme (£7,466), and grants received from Trusts (£6000).

Reserves policy

Given the fact that all of our activities are in essence self-funding, and that if we were forced to cease activities our ongoing costs will be negligible, the Trustees have not set a level of reserves. This will be reviewed in the coming year.

Risk Management

The Trustees monitor the risks WPHT is facing and take steps to manage them. An appropriate insurance policy is in place. There were no reportable incidents during the year.

Plans for the future

No funds are materially in deficit and the Trustees have no doubts about the viability of WPHT as a going concern. The trustees held a strategic planning meeting, in April 2022 to consider the long term role of the trust, and concluded that it had accomplished many of its original objectives, while others were no longer relevant. Accordingly, a plan has been put in place to establish ACGP as a separate not-for-profit organisation and to wind up WPHT. It is hoped that this will be accomplished during 2023.

STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT

Governing document

WPHT is a company limited by guarantee (04386014) and a registered charity (1098671), and is governed by its Memorandum & Articles of Association dated 22.02.2002. The Trustees of WPHT are also Directors of the Company for the purposes of Company Law.

Method of appointment or election of Trustees

Potential Trustees are interviewed by the Chair of Trustees, information about them forwarded to all other Trustees, and they will be invited to attend a board meeting as an observer. The Trustees will discuss in camera whether to invite them to become a Trustee.

Policies adopted for the induction and training of Trustees

All Trustees are required to sign a declaration of eligibility, undergo appropriate background checks and complete an induction programme as defined in the relevant policy. They are provided with an induction pack which introduces them to WPHT and to their responsibilities as Trustees as set out by the Charity Commission. paWPHT Annual Report & Accounts 2021-22 a
