Objectives and activities

The objectives of TWFTW UK are to:

  1. Raise awareness and support for the unfinished work of Bible translation (BT) by partnering with churches/individuals in the UK, attending or organizing events/conferences and via social media.

  2. Fund translation and literacy projects in Africa, Asia and Europe. We also provide critical Bible Translation capabilities to the wider organisation - specifically expertise in training translators (Dr Regine Koroma, VP Training) and oversight of the translation process (Dr Barry Funnel, VP Translation Consultant)

Capability developments

The most significant development this year was the appointment of Steve Lancaster as our first full time employee and CEO for TWFTW UK. This has dramatically increased our capacity for engaging with potential partners to support and fund the work of BT. His focus is to build partnerships with UK churches, organisations and key donors to both promote and raise support for the BT projects we are involved with. Steve replaces Daniel Davis who was part time and as a Trustee offered his services at no cost. We would like to acknowledge the important contribution Daniel

made in developing our funding base and advocating for further capability support to enable this next step of our journey.

The International organisation continues to develop its capabilities and capacity under the new leadership of Kobus van Aswegen and, as part of this, Dr. Barry Funnell has been appointed VP Consulting on the International team. Similarly, Dr Regine Koroma, also based in the UK but working for the International team, has been appointed VP Training, developing and delivering the training programme for translators across the various countries that TWFTW operates in. Both these roles provide critical capabilities to achieving the mission of the organisation.

A significant number of Bible Translation Consultants has been recruited and trained during the year, all based in their home countries (outside UK). This has enabled the work to flourish as more translation teams can be supported.

Building our support base

Since Steve Lancaster joined in Sept 2021 he has stepped up speaking engagements at Churches, conference attendance and contacts with key donors. This is starting to bear fruit with increased interest and support for the work of Bible translation.

The income during the 2021/22 financial year increased to £79.4k, a significant increase on prior year thanks in part to a donation to partially cover the CEO salary. Around 20% of our funding is from DMG in Germany to support personnel in the UK in the Bible training department led by Dr Regine Koroma, and the remainder is from individuals or churches.

We have significantly improved communications to our donor base during the past year; we produce a monthly newsletter and there are also weekly emails from our International Office highlighting specific projects, personal stories or bringing to life the steps involved in BT work. Our website has been updated and we now have a harmonised branding and design across all the support bases. Prayer Breakfasts are held each month in two locations and we hope to further expand this.

– Our impact BT projects, Literacy Support & Training

The number of translation projects underway continues to grow and is in excess of 150 (April 2022). We helped to support translation work in Asia, Europe and Africa. Literacy training was also supported in some countries.

Our largest expenditure during the year (£28k) was on training our growing team of Bible translators. This diploma programme is developed, coordinated and run from the UK and Europe by Dr Koroma with members of the team travelling as needed to host countries. The number of qualified translators is increasing dramatically, which has a multiplier effect in terms of the number of BT projects that can be supported - and at much lower cost than for a foreign translator to move to the host country. Our second largest cost (~£10k) was, in a similar vein, developing our growing number of national BT consultants; their role is to mentor and supervise multiple translator teams in a country/region and to sign off the BT projects as they progress through the various stages of translation. Again, this is a crucial capability which empowers local translators and enables the 150+ BT projects to progress faster and

cheaper than deploying foreign workers to each project. Dr Barry Funnell leads this team of consultants.

We also support several specific Bible translation projects, and our intention is to increasingly deploy funds to specific projects and build a stronger connection between our donor base and BT teams on the ground.

Public Beneft statement

  1. We have promoted the need to complete the translation of the Bible into every language for the benefit of minority people groups.

  2. We have provided critical capabilities and financed Bible translation in Asia, Africa and Europe.

  3. We support literacy projects where

These benefits are in line with our objectives as stated in our governance document.

The Trustees declare that they have approved the trustee’s report above.

Signed on behalf of the Charity’s Trustees.
