Since 1972 Witham BB has been helping children and young people have FUN , build FRIENDSHIPS , understand FAITH and explore FULLNESS of life. We believe in young people and put them first in all we do, helping them to reach their full potential as they journey from childhood into adulthood.

This document includes 2nd Witham Boys' Brigade's ( "Witham BB " ) Trustees' Report and Accounts for the year ended 31st August 2025. The basis of preparation of these documents are as per the provisions of the Charity Commission of England & Wales, for an unincorporated charity of income less than £250,000 per annum.

We would like to thank all the staff and volunteers who have enabled Witham BB to carry out its activities during the year. And we also thank all our financial supporters who have provided the resources to fund these activities.

2. Structure, Governance and Management

Description of the charity's trusts

2nd Witham Boys' Brigade ("Witham BB") is a registered charity governed by a Declaration of Trust dated 28th March, 2003 (but has been operating since September 1972).

New trustees are appointed by the Board of Trustees when appropriate. Suitable candidates are considered on the basis of their skills, experience and sympathy with the aims of the Charity. New trustees have the opportunity of reviewing appropriate documents including the accounts as part of their induction process.

Additional governance issues

The trustees of Witham BB are charged with the management and supervision of the affairs of the Charity:

To bring an independent judgement to bear on issues of strategy, performance and resources; and observe the highest standards of integrity, confidentiality and objectivity;

To act in good faith in the interests of Witham BBGA and its members and in the public interest, exercise due care and diligence, and contribute expertise and experience to the work of the Trustees;

To promote the reputation and standing of Witham BB;

To administer the organisation and all its assets in the interest of current, potential and future beneficiaries.

The trustees have ensured that all activities throughout the period have been in the interest of public benefit.

The trustees confirm that they have referred to the guidance contained in the Charity Commission's general guidance on public benefit when reviewing the Charity's aims and objectives and in planning future activities.

Witham BB has continued the process of assessing risk and implementing risk management strategies. Each board meeting considers the main risks facing the charity, and the trustees consider that the 2 main risks to be safeguarding of our young people, and financial sustainability of the charity.

The staff team consists of: a part-time finance and admin volunteer who oversees day to day finance and admin within the organisation, a volunteer Accountant to assist with day to day running, and a part-time schools worker.

We have two paid staff positions this year, involving the work and education at Twimstead land project. The schools work was merged from CYO Braintree District Trust in January 2015.

Witham BB is a Member of The Boys' Brigade, the UK charity co-ordinating and supporting all Boys Brigade activities in the UK.

Lorne Campbell (Trustee) continues as a Special Constable and continues to be the manager of the Newlands Shopping Centre and Kay Hunt (Trustee) is an employee of Maltings & Rickstones Academy, who we work with in our schools work programmes. Otherwise there are no related party interests amongst the trustees. Trustees are asked to declare any conflicts of interest, and excuse themselves from discussions where a conflict arises.

3. Objectives and activities

Objectives of the Charity

The advancement of Christ's kingdom among young people and the promotion of habits of obedience, reverence, discipline, self respect and all that tends towards a true Christian lifestyle.

• by helping and assisting young people through their leisure time activities so to develop their physical, mental and spiritual capacities in accordance with Christian religion,

• that they may grow to full maturity as individuals and members of society

• and that their conditions of life may be improved

• and in so far as they are consistent with the primary purpose for the purposes of a boys brigade and such lawful and charitable purposes in furtherance of the above, as shall from time to time be agreed by the trustees

Our 2030 Vision is that Witham BB, through its programme of youth and children's work, aims to create confident, capable, articulate and experienced young people who are aware of local challenges and opportunities with the knowledge, contacts, health and base skills to irrepressibly and lead the future of both their own lives and the life of Witham. The results of this directed vision has resulted in a noteworthy number of young people completing the programme, having built those skills and been recognised in various ways by the local BB organisation and through recognition in the national BB organisation's various award schemes, including what is hoped to be, our first HM King ’s Badge. .

Review of the activities

The following is a summary of the activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to the objects stated above. As noted in section 2., the trustees have taken due regard to ensure that its activities are for the public benefit.

PROGRAMME

Witham BB continues to deploy four age and stage appropriate programmes for children and young people as we have in years past. Programmes resumed more normal operations this year, with overnights, residentials, and international exchange trips (key components of our programming) are operating normally again after Covid.

The majority of the Anchors (5-8 year olds) programme in 2024/25 was still focused on having fun and making friends; playing games, making crafts and cooking. Additionally, the Four F's (Fun, Friendship, Faith and Fullness of Life) were the focus of programmes throughout the term. Crafts and interactive games are a highlight of the Anchor experience each week, science experiments conducted by Sciencemania, plus a termly visit to crazy golf or bowling, and a Teddy Bears Picnic at Maldon Prom Park.

This work is vital to feed other Sections.

The programme looks to grow and develop young people's fine motor skills, interpersonal skills and provide them with an enjoyable weekly evening activity.

This year's Juniors (8-11 year olds) programme continues to focus strongly on the 4 values of Witham BB. Fun, Friendship, Faith & Fullness. At Juniors, however, they begin to introduce an awards structure and badgework. All of the young people got to take part in lots of sports, games, crafts and various outings. The 101 Things to do before you are 12 programme remains a signature activity throughout the year with young people working towards completing the programme. As a result it is now an almost weekly feature. This year several young people finished 101 things and had their awards. Days out we support are always interesting to read about. In 2024 - 25 we moved to a new awards programme by BB HQ, and new badges also.

– Company Section Year in Review (Autumn 2024 Summer 2025)

This year has been one of growth, creativity and deeper engagement for our Company Section young people, as we continued to build a programme rooted in our core values of Fun, Friendship, Faith and Fullness of life.

Across the year, evenings were intentionally designed to stretch skills, strengthen relationships and encourage young people to think about their place in the community - while always ensuring activities remained exciting, welcoming and accessible.

Building Confidence and Character - Autumn Term

The autumn programme focused on teamwork, decision-making and personal discovery. From high-energy challenge nights and creative talent evenings to thoughtful sessions exploring parables, smart choices and community heroes, young people were encouraged to reflect, collaborate and grow.

Practical learning was blended with adventure, including Laser Quest, survival skills with first aid and CPR, stargazing, science challenges, debate evenings and mindfulness activities. Each session offered opportunities to develop resilience, communication and selfawareness while strengthening friendships within the group.

Developing Skills and Leadership - Spring Term

The spring term centred on skill-building and deeper ownership. A series of skills taster sessions and masterclasses allowed young people to explore practical abilities, teamwork and problem-solving in new ways, supported by dedicated leaders and volunteers.

Highlights included an overnight experience at the church, promotion celebrations, sports evenings and a large group outing combining laser tag, escape rooms and team challenges. These experiences helped build confidence, trust and independence, while reinforcing the importance of belonging and encouragement within the group.

Throughout the term, the four core values remained central - helping young people grow more capable, articulate and aware of both local challenges and opportunities.

Adventure, Celebration and Community - Summer Term

The summer programme brought together outdoor adventure, teamwork and recognition. Activities ranged from rocket launches, sports tournaments and creative challenges to denbuilding, canoeing evenings and team engineering tasks.

Formal Awards Night provided an important moment to celebrate growth, perseverance, service and leadership shown throughout the year, while social events such as the Independence Day BBQ strengthened community spirit and friendships.

These shared experiences not only created lasting memories but helped young people step into greater responsibility, confidence and collaboration.

Impact Across the Year

Across all three terms, the Company Section has seen young people:

• Grow in confidence and communication

• Develop practical life skills and resilience

• Strengthen friendships and teamwork

• Engage thoughtfully with faith and values

• Take greater ownership of activities and challenges

The programme continues to provide a safe, encouraging environment where young people can explore who they are, what they can do and how they can contribute positively to the world around them.

Seniors Section Year in Review (Autumn 2024 – Summer 2025)

The Witham BB Seniors Programme is a collaboration between Staff and Seniors, as befits an age group that both desires and deserves opportunities to make their own decisions.

A strong emphasis therefore throughout the past year has been on encouraging the Seniors to not only engage with our programme planning, but to also run their own activities with Staff support. The past year has certainly been a success in this regard, with leadership skills being developed alongside practical challenges and reflections on cultural and social issues.

As with all sections of Witham BB, the Seniors' section adhere to the "Four Fs" principles of "Fun", "Faith", "Friendship", and "Fullness". Seniors is the final section within Witham BB, so we aim with our programming to develop well-rounded individuals equipped with the knowledge, social, and practical skills they will need to lead fulfilling lives.

Cultivating Knowledge and Nurturing Self-Improvement - Autumn Term

Opportunities to both discover new and hone learnt skills were an important part of the Autumn term's programme: our Seniors were challenged to prove their culinary resourcefulness during our "Cook Out" competition; they practised their presentational and organisational skills when pitching future Seniors' evenings for our Dragons' Den night; they learnt the art of comedy and improv during our "Character Mashup" evening.

Alongside these skills-based sessions, the Autumn term programme had a strong focus on knowledge-building. Our Seniors represent an age group spanning Secondary Education and Further Education, with Higher Education being a future path for some. As such, we believe it is important for them to cover challenging topics with the appropriate nuance and sensitivity for developing critical-thinking skills. During this term, this included reflections on the key themes of Kafkaism and Sun Tzu's The Art of War, as well as a look at the CatholicProtestant tension that led to the Gunpowder plot.

Developing Teamwork and Leadership skills - Spring Term

The Spring 2025 Programme brought to the fore our Seniors' abilities to brainstorm, organise, and lead their own evenings. Creativity and collaboration were therefore two key themes during the term as our Seniors worked in pairs to design and run their own "Dungeons and Dragons" and "April Fools" nights. Learning to share responsibilities and hold themselves accountable to each other was an important part of their development.

Working together on our Seniors-ran evening ensured "Friendship" was a recurring tenet of our programme and social skills were reinforced further during our social deduction game evenings, which also allowed for "Fun".

Debating skills, meanwhile, were put to the test during our "Desert Parlourment" night, where heated discussions over the world's problems were cooled down with ice cream. Culture also remained on the programme for Spring, with a look into Disco as a social movement and an Ancient Rome themed-evening on the Ides of March. We aim for these activities to encourage our Seniors to grow into articulate and knowledgeable individuals.

With such diverse offerings this term, we believe "fullness" is a pinnacle achievement of our Spring Programming.

Confidence-building through self-expression and celebration - Summer Term

Summer term was both the culmination of our skills-building throughout the year and also an opprtunity for the Seniors to recognise their own talents in a positive environment.

In the spirit of our efforts to engage our Seniors in the decision-making of our sessions, the "Awards Night After Party" saw the Seniors create trophies and vote on their self-curated list of achievements over the past year. Recognising each other's unique contributions to Seniors and then bonding through games was a great way for the Seniors to strengthen friendships built up throughout their time at Witham BB.

Alongside renewed "Dungeons and Dragons" sessions and "Pointocracy" challenges run by the Seniors, Staff hosted several opportunities for performance. The "Eurowitham Song Contest" and end-of-year "Karaoke Night" were excellent occasions for witnessing vocal talent and stage presence. The latter was also on display during our theatrical play, "The Story of Jason" in which the Seniors honoured a departing Staff member with their acting skills. Opportunities for self-expression allow our Seniors to gain confidence in themselves and feel more comfortable when public-speaking is expected from them in their day-to-day lives.

We are happy to have ended the year on such a positive note, both in atmosphere and in growth of talents.

Impact Across the Year

Over the course of three terms of Senior section, Staff have witnessed:

• young people taking on greater responsibilities, contributing to the day-to-day running of their youth group and strengthening their leadership skills

• young people engaged and motivated to tackle challenges through teamwork and problem-solving

• young people growing in confidence, unafraid to express themselves and bring their creativity to the foreground

• young people critically dissecting social issues with nuance and sensitivity

• It has been immensely fulfilling for staff to recognise the impact of our volunteering, and to see our young people grow into outstanding members of society.

Future Outlook for Seniors

Looking ahead to a new year of Senior Section Programming, Staff and Seniors alike are keen to build on the progress made through supporting Seniors to design and run their own sessions. Our Seniors continue to serve as role models for our younger cohorts at Witham BB so it is important we continue to provide them with opportunities to demonstrate leadership.

Additionally, we have seen our seniors grow more and more confident in themselves and their abilities. We wish to create further opportunities for them to recognise their competencies and be proud of how they portray themselves. Performing and presenting are two key ways of enabling this.

Interspersed with these nights, we wish to develop vocational skills that will serve them well as they consider their options for college, apprenticeships, university, and employment. Revision sessions and mock interviews will be carefully programmed to fit with academic demands during year, be it GCSEs, A Levels, BTECs, or mocks.

Above all, Seniors, Staff, and our wider support network remain motivated to bring out the best in our young people with engaging, challenging programming.

Looking Ahead

As we move forward, the focus remains on offering high-quality, engaging programmes that balance fun with formation - helping each young person experience belonging, build character and move toward a full and flourishing life.

We are deeply grateful to our leaders, volunteers, families and community partners whose time, creativity and commitment make this work possible.

Twinstead - Peter’s Vale

The past year has seen continued progress at Peter’s Vale across conservation, site development and education.

Volunteers have worked alongside the Warden to make the site safer by managing the ongoing impact of ash dieback disease. Several unsafe trees have been removed, with further work planned over the coming years to minimise risks and protect the surrounding woodland.

The Warden Project has continued to enhance the site, with improvements to hedge maintenance, pathways, landscaped areas and the Low Ropes Course. During Summer 2025, the Nature Trail was extended deeper into the woodland using an environmentally sensitive route that avoided the removal of healthy trees, supported by selective coppicing.

Our partnership with the Stour Valley & Dedham Vale National Landscape has continued to strengthen, providing valuable support through advice, volunteering opportunities, educational initiatives and professional expertise.

In August 2025, Peter’s Vale hosted Summer Camp, welcoming around 40 young people and leaders for a weekend of adventure and fellowship. Activities included cycling, the Low Ropes Course, bug hotel building, swimming, group cooking and The Great Escape challenge.

The Education Programme continues to provide practical, conservation-focused learning for schools and youth groups. Participants develop environmental awareness and teamwork through activities such as coppicing, habitat management, and building bird and bat boxes. The programme remains fully inclusive, with activities adapted to support young people of all abilities, including those with SEND, ensuring everyone can enjoy meaningful outdoor learning experiences.

Schools

Christian Youth Outreach (CYO) has continued to serve the Witham schools community, building on work established since 1994 through assemblies, lessons and other activities. From recent reports in 2024/2025 data indicates a significant rise in young people seeking support with a record number requiring someone to talk to about their mental health and anxieties. The charity’s focus remains on supporting the emotional wellbeing and resilience of children and young people at a time when anxiety and mental health challenges continue to affect many pupils in Witham's schools. .

In line with the Department for Education’s guidance on promoting mental health and wellbeing in schools, CYO has continued to deliver support using the SUMO (Stop, Understand, Move On) approach developed by Paul Magee of SUMO Life Coaching. This framework helps young people develop self-awareness, resilience and confidence through the Six SUMO Skills for Life, encouraging positive decision-making and emotional expression within a supportive environment.

As part of the ongoing commitment of Witham BB and CYO, previously secured funding continues to support the delivery of wellbeing programmes for Witham schools, including staff and senior leaders. These programmes remain available to schools during the reporting period.

The Schools Worker has continued to make positive progress within local schools and has ongoing discussions with academy trusts to explore further opportunities for the academic year 20252026.

Other activities

A group from Witham BB, travelled to Denmark and stayed at the FDF camp in the Billund area. This enabled us to visit Legoland over a number of days, local FDF climbing centre and a fun FDF evening too. 16 young people and staff, travelled, via minibus overland, and flying, with staff at each travel location.

Plans have begun to visit the Neenah Brigade in Wisconsin in either 2027 or 2028.

We are heavily dependent upon the services of unpaid members to deliver front line children's and youth work in Witham. All of the trustees are volunteers who freely give of their time and are greatly appreciated. Witham BB could not do a fraction of what it does without the amazing help of the volunteers and of the staff who constantly go the extra mile. Thank you!

4. Achievements and performance, and future developments

Programme

One young person is working towards completing Kings Badge, (started out as The Queens badge). A small number of young people, are heading towards Presidents badge. Two staff undergo Youth Leader Training this year.

The Jack Petchey Award scheme is in full swing, and we have full support from the Foundation, on both the Achievement Scheme and Leaders Award / Grant.

Harder to quantify is the personal development of many of our young people, as they grow in confidence and get involved in leadership, which will stand them well as they grow into young adults.

Future developments

As is the case with all grass-roots youth charities, Witham BB is working in a financial environment where funding is ever harder to find. We have had to reduce our staffing headcount and activities in order to balance the budget. However, our focus is still on our core programming and the completion of our 4 F’s focus.

Our Programme activities will build on the current success and try to attract more young people to the groups through a variety of activities run on a weekly basis.

During the next year we will build on the work we have developed in our Schools Work. We will work on the cross over between all the areas of our work - schools and BB programmes. We will try to build stronger relationships with the local churches through better communication.

Our Sports and Youth & Community work will continue through established funders, building on the success of previous years.

In all of this we look to build around our strapline of having Faith in Young People.

5. Financial review

It is the Trustees' intention to work towards maintaining an unrestricted fund at least equivalent to six months operation expenditure to enable them to manage volatility of income and to respond quickly to appeals for significant support where appropriate, the timing of which is unpredictable.

No funds are materially in deficit as of 31st August 2025, though funding administrative overhead and paid staff salaries and benefits is a significant challenge. These expenditures are essential to maintaining key levels of volunteer and organisational support.

The Trustees' commitment to achieving a balanced budget is being actively pursued. The Board of Trustees work hard to review income options, seek funding and monitor outgoing expenses. Witham BB is grateful for the financial, and other, support received from the following organisations over the years :

We are also greatly indebted to the individuals within our community who support us financially.

Our income for the year was £53,616 (2023/24: £73,563), with £31,090 relating to restricted funds. Our expenditure was £56,610 (2023/24 : £50,338), with £37,958 relating to restricted funds. Overall, we had a deficit of £2,994 (2023/24: £23,226 surplus) with total funds of £57,467 at year-end (2022/23: £60,461).

The market value of the Witham BBGA's freehold properties is estimated still to be £75,000 as disclosed in these financial statements.

6. Other optional information

Health and Safety Statement

Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, an employer has the duty to prepare a written policy statement. In general, the same health and safety standards should be applied to voluntary workers as they would to employees exposed to the same risk.

Health and Safety Statement

We have undertaken to follow the Health and Safety statement and following Guidelines laid down by The Boys' Brigade nationally (Safety Handbook). We seek to indicate our responsibilities in that Health and Safety Policy, which is to be reviewed annually. Ultimate responsibility for Health and Safety in its various undertakings rests with the Trustees. However, particular responsibilities have been delegated to senior leaders within their area of operation. This statement seeks to confirm the response to Health and Safety by The Boys' Brigade with regard to its various activities.

Health

We will, so far as is reasonably practical, seek to ensure that those who are employed by the organisation or who act as volunteers are fit for the tasks they will undertake. It will seek to ensure that any reasonable alterations, which can be made, are made to enable Witham BBGA to meet its duties as employers under the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 and as service providers under the Disability Discrimination Act 2005 with regard to people with disabilities.

Safety

Witham BB seeks to meet its duties under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999. For those tasks directly under the control of Witham BBGA, Witham BBGA undertakes the necessary risk assessments and where reasonably practical, implements any appropriate controls. Training and information will be provided to ensure that those at risk are made aware.

Accident Reporting

Witham BB seeks to ensure that staff and volunteers are aware of the need to report all accidents and dangerous occurrences to Witham BB office, without delay, following any accident or occurrence. The requirement for reporting accidents is set out in the Staff Handbook and the Safety Handbook section 6. Witham BB will, if required, report to BB Headquarters and on under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995.

Safeguarding

Witham BB takes its duties under the Children Act 1989 seriously and has appropriate procedures and staff appointed to meet its duties under the 1989 Act. If a reasonable suspicion is raised about the protection of a child under the age of 18 years, Witham BB will undertake its duties using its procedures.

The Boys' Brigade has a “Safe from Harm” policy to vet all those who have the responsibilities for the care of children within areas of its responsibilities to comply with the Protection of Children Act 1999. Witham BB follows the policy set out by The Boys' Brigade in 'BB Safeguarding Policy and Procedures' and ‘Safe from Harm’
