## **Bath Minerva Choir AGM 2020 Trustees report**

How do you write a report on a year like this last one. It has been quite a bizarre and extraordinary year! The year started with rehearsals for our spring concert and we almost made it, but not quite; just two weeks before we felt we had to take the decision to cancel in light of the fast developing pandemic. It was the right, the inevitable decision but such a shame as we had all really enjoyed learning Handel’s Alexander’s Feast and were working towards an excellent performance.

## **What since then? – a virtual world…**

And so we entered this bizarre world of ‘virtual’ practically everything. We all began to discover zoom but also that you can’t really sing on zoom. And yet such is the importance not only of singing but also of belonging together and staying together through these difficult times of restrictions, that we determined to find a way of being together and of still singing and keeping Bath Minerva Choir alive. Gradually and increasingly, we have found a way to do this and some of those who were very reluctant at first have nevertheless joined in. We started our zoom experiments with Vivaldi’s Gloria, thinking, hoping this would perhaps not go on too long. But we soon realised that was not going to be the case. So, despite all the limitations of zoom we have rejoiced in discovering the delights of Haydn’s The Seasons and Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius together, and yet separately, in our front rooms!

## **And there have been other highlights** .

Some of us remembered the sheer joy of singing in harmony together when we stood in the Family Stands at Twerton Park football stadium and sang out the Rachmaninov Bogoroditse and We’ll Never Walk Alone – curious combination! – to an audience in their homes on the other side of the pitch and with the groundsman with his mower and white line painting machine walking up and down. Bizarre but wonderful, moving even, and entered into by others on the end of a live stream. And we have made two recordings – That was an experience too – nerve racking for those brave enough to have a go but worth it. The lovely Mozart Ave Verum Corpus and the beautiful Rachmaninov Bogoroditse. We ended the year with our virtual Christmas party. Such fun!! Not only a great sing along but a real kind of party spirit – drinks, jokes and all! I truly think all of this has been REMARKABLE!
