## Welcome to Ab Phab Youth Club’s annual activities report 2023/2024
**Ab Phab’s Mission statement** : That all young people in Barking and Dagenham and surrounding areas are able to express what they want and are offered opportunities to succeed, including being involved in decision making, resulting in their voices being listened to and acted on.
**Aim** : To provide a youth club, and associated activities for friends and families, that offer social, physical, educational and employment opportunities that meets the needs of disabled and non-disabled disadvantaged young people aged 11-17 and 18 – 25
## **Projects**
The main projects we have delivered in this year are:
11-17 – Children In Need funded project which has focussed on giving young people skills to improve their social connectivity, build confidence to access in the community and developing all-important soft skills which support their independence. We have also delivered at least two hours of sporting/exercise activity per week. Alongside this, we have focussed on physical health with the delivery of a healthy eating/gardening project which has made use of our garden and young people have had opportunity to learn how to prepare balanced and nutritional meals.
18+ - Year 1 of our National Lottery funded employability and soft skills session. Young people have participated in a number of activities, workshops and experiences to develop their employability skills and independence. We continue to work with the young adults to get them closer to voluntary and employment opportunities.
## **Trips**
We have delivered more trips than ever in this year, which has been rewarding and fulfilling for the young people. Highlights include:
- London Open Top Bus Tour – the young people got to see various London landmarks and enjoyed travelling across London Bridge.
- Multiple theatre trips including West End Musicals Matilda, Wizard of Oz, Frozen and Mrs Doubtfire.
- Young people practiced their restaurant reservations, ordering, payment and other skills with trips to Pizza Express and Nando’s.
- Gaming bus – In a first for Ab Phab, a gaming bus drove down to one of our sessions and the young people got to play a variety of video games in a bright and lively setting!
- Young people got sporty at Puttshack and Dagenham & Redbridge’s FC’s Diversity Day.
- Partner organisations came down to session and delivered fun sessions including UKON Careers providing arts activities to celebrate Carnival. Noah’s Ark also delivered a great session on the importance of recycling. The Museum Of London also came along to a session where young people drew relics.
- Our annual Summer, Halloween and Christmas discos!
## **Stubbers**
We enjoyed our annual week at Stubbers in August 2023. 43 young people attended across the week. We had an action-planned week where the young people participated in water sports and land activities.
Members took on new challenges with the XL paddleboards, Archery combat and the new climbing walls. Throughout the week the members were supportive of one another and showed unity when overcoming fears together as a group.
## **Neal Crowley Memorial Garden**
Throughout the year, the young people have worked hard to expand Neal’s Garden including painting old tyres to create flowers beds and painting old flowers pot to bring some extra colour to the garden. Thank you to the young people, staff, trustees for their dedication which have supported in helping to grow this garden. A special thank you goes to the anonymous donors who have donated various ornaments, plants and materials for the garden!
## **Funders**
We would like to thank all of our funders for supporting us over this year, including:
- BBC Children in Need – funding the Thrive (11-18) project.
- National Lottery – funding the Evolve (18-25) project.
- Essex Youth Trust – Funding a large proportion of our Stubbers residential
- Barking and Dagenham NCIL – Funding our gardening/healthy eating (11-18) project
- Peter Harrison Foundation – Funding our sports/exercise activity program
- Jack Petchey Foundation – Funding our awards program and contributing to our Stubbers residential.
- Other funders who supported our delivery – Vanquis Banking Group Social Impact Fund (administered by London Community Foundation) and Masonic Charitable Foundation
## **Volunteers and supporters**
We would like to thank all of the volunteers that have contributed their time this year, whether this be supporting the delivery of our sessions or tending to the garden over the summer. We would also like to thank everyone who has supported us this year through our Amazon Wish List, everyone who attends our fundraising events and other organisations
which have delivered sessions in partnership with us without cost.
