WILD Young Parents
Annual Report
2021

**This year, our Annual Report is focused on, and dedicated to, our WILD babies and toddlers, who have only known a pandemic world. We promise we will do our best to help you grow and develop, and have a more hopeful future.**

**Our WILD Vision We want young parents and their babies to have the right to belong and thrive, to be heard and helped, and to have the best possible start to family life Our Mission We will work alongside young parent families to provide a whole family service, and to challenge systems and society to give them a better chance at being healthy, happy and safe Our Aims Explore: collaborate with families, leaders and practitioners to design and deliver services and models that address the complexities families face Practice: deliver our whole-family, model flagship service across Cornwall Share: create effective resources and support for other organisations to learn and use Change: influence national policy, focus, services and narrative for young parent families**

**Since our new Welcome Work team have started asking about risk indicators for suicide at joining WILD, they have identified that a huge 4 in 10 parents have risk indicators, and 1 in 6 of our new young mums have previously tried to take their own lives.**

**IMPACT: parental mental health (Youth Music evaluation tool based on Edinburgh-Warwick)**

**IMPACT: how we help with basic family needs (parents self-scored change since joining WILD)**

## **IMPACT: multiagency collaboration to support children**

**Young parent midwifery and health pathway is now on 'opt-out' basis, so more families are helped Training sessions delivered for health visitors, health visitor practitioners, "best start in life" early years practitioners, and childminders Partnership with health visiting to raise up concerns earlier for children Closer working with pre-birth social workers New Welcome Work team building outward referral pathways for specialist support for babies and parents**

**Bookstart boxes delivered to all families - books, storysacks, mark-making materials Tailored library storytime sessions for young parent families across Cornwall WILD weekly storytime WILD puppets out and about at groups and in nature**

## **Allotment**

Our Dads created an allotment in Pengegon Estate, Camborne. It has been a hugely valuable outdoor space to use in the pandemic. Since then, the allotment has been a key part in our return to face-to-face work, and in our whole-family work. After our visit from Simon Reeve for his TV show over a year ago, we have added to our shed with decking, planting beds, and more social areas. And we have collaborated with the allotment committee to take over more land, making our patch now triple in size! Going forward, we will be developing this land, and looking to add to our allotment family in the east of the county.

_"Who needs couples counselling when you've got this" "Yeah, it's great when you can do stuff like this together"_

**A conversation when digging up tree roots...**

## **Core Offer**

**We are now operating a full face-to-face offer once more, with developments that have included:**

## **Campaign and Influence**

**We have made significant steps in progressing our plans to have greater influence to enable more young parent families to have a better start, including: Young parents' G7 film focused on children's rights, in response to the summit in Cornwall - we even got a copy of our photography book to the FLOTUS! CEO is chair of OSCP learning group Funding for development of national alliance Seminar delivery for Research In Practice Training delivery for partner agencies: eg health visiting and early years**

## **Partnership**

**Highlights: Leadership of local Early Years covid recovery partnership Storymaking with The Writers' Block Arts Council national exhibition, with works chosen and curated by WILD young dads from their allotment shed throughout the pandemic Eden music and nature visits Museums and galleries projects, including photography exhibition Leadership of new VCSE children, young people and families Alliance**

## **Learning: Changes in Need**

**We were expecting the large increase in numbers of families to reduce during the second year of the pandemic, but the higher level has continued, and over 400 families have used our services. We have also continued to see higher safeguarding levels of need: 42% of all children have had safeguarding interventions Emerging data shows there may be elevated risk for children whose parents have risk indicators for suicide, more of whom experience court and care proceedings.**

## **Learning: pandemic**

**At the end of nearly two years of pandemic, we continue to see the impact on our WILD families. The pressures created by lockdowns and changes to jobs and income have exacerbated parental ill health. After so much time away from an active community life, many young parents are feeling anxious about going outside or joining groups. They are also anxious about the covid vaccines, and we have used social media and group sessions to reassure, including one of our young mums starring in our local public health campaign.**

## **Feedback**

**We are really pleased that our Net Promoter Score from our young parents is +80 (All scores over zero are positive, and anything over 50 is considered excellent)**

## **Moving Forward**

**We want to progress some key learning from our work and evaluation over the last year:**

**- Adapt our CRM system to be a better fit for our work - Explore Human Learning Systems approach to our outcomes work - Negotiate with funders to agree core resilience outcomes - Develop our offer in: antenatal support whole family working evidence-based interventions support for increasing number LGBTQ+ young parents - Explore comms and our 'Book of WILD' - Progress our national Alliance and network**

FINANCIAL REVIEW

## **RESERVES POLICY**

**It is the policy of the charity to try to maintain unrestricted funds within a range that provides a sufficient level of funds to meet six months' core running costs, together with any staff redundancy costs and future leasing commitments. This is considered to be sufficient time to identify and access new sources of funding should the need arise or if this fails, to enable an orderly wind down of the charity.**

## **STATEMENT OF TRUSTEES RESPONSIBILITIES**

**The trustees are responsible for preparing the Report of the Trustees and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice). The law applicable to charities in England and Wales, the Charities Act 2011, Charity (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 and the provisions of the trust deed requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and of the incoming resources and application of resources, including the income and expenditure, of the charity for that period. In preparing those financial statements, the trustees are required to - select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently; - observe the methods and principles in the Charity SORP; - make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent; - prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in business.**

**The trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and to enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011, the Charity (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 and the provisions of the trust deed. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity.**

**Wild Young Parents Project INDEPENDENT EXAMINERS REPORT**

## **Independent Examiner's Report to the trustees of Wild Young Parents Project**

I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of Wild Young Parents Project for the year ended 31 December 2021 which comprise the Statement of Financial Activities, the Summary Income and Expenditure Account, the Balance Sheet, the Statement of Cash Flows and the related notes.

## **Responsibilities and basis of report**

As the trustees of the charity you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 ('the 2011 Act).

Having satisfied myself that the accounts of the charity are not required to be audited and are eligible for independent examination, I report in respect of my examination of your charity's accounts as carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act. In carrying out my examination I have followed the Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act.

## **Independent examiner's statement**

As the charity's gross income exceeded £250,000 your examiner must be a member of a body listed in section 145 of the 2011 Act. I confirm that I am qualified to undertake the examination because I am a member of Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.

I have completed my examination. I can confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that:

- accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or

- the accounts do not accord with those records; or

- the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the forma nd content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a 'true and fair' view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination; or

- the accounts have not been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102).

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

Page 8

**Wild Young Parents Project NOTES TO THE ACCOUNTS**

## **Tangible fixed assets and depreciation**

Depreciation is provided at the following annual rates in order to write off each asset over its estimated useful life:

Office Equipment 25% straight line basis

Fixtures & Fittings 20% straight line basis

## **Trade and other debtors**

Trade and other debtors are recognised at the settlement amount due after any trade discount offered. Prepayments are valued at the amount prepaid net of any trade discounts due.

## **Cash and cash equivalents**

Cash and cash equivalents comprise cash at bank and on hand, demand deposits with banks and other short-term highly liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less and bank overdrafts. In the statement of financial position, bank overdrafts are shown within borrowings or current liabilities. In the Statement of Cash Flows, cash and cash equivalents are shown net of bank overdrafts that are repayable on demand and form an integral part of the company's cash management.

## **Trade and other creditors**

Short term creditors are measured at the transaction price. Other creditors and provisions are recognised where the charity has a present obligation resulting from a past event that will probably result in the transfer of funds to a third party and the amount due to settle the obligation can be measured or estimated reliably. Creditors and provisions are normally recognised at their settlement amount after allowing for any trade discounts due.

## **Leased assets**

Where the charity enters into a lease which entails taking substantially all the risks and rewards of ownership of an asset, the lease is treated as a finance lease.

Leases which do not transfer substantially all the risks and rewards of ownership to charity are classified as operating leases.

Assets held under finance leases are initially recognised as assets of the charity at their fair value at the inception of the lease or, if lower, at the present value of the minimum lease payments. The corresponding liability to the lessor is included in the balance sheet date as a finance lease obligation. Lease payments are apportioned between finance expenses and reduction of the lease obligation so as to achieve a constant rate of interest on the remaining balance of the liability. Finance expenses are recognised immediately, unless they are directly attributable to qualifying assets, in which case they are capitalised in accordance with the charity's policy on borrowing costs.

Assets held under finance leases are depreciated in the same way as owned assets.

Operating lease payments are recognised as an expense on a straight-line basis over the lease term.

In the event that lease incentives are received to enter into operating leases, such incentives are recognised as a liability. The aggregate benefit of incentives is recognised as a reduction of rental expense on a straight-line basis.

Page 9

**Wild Young Parents Project NOTES TO THE ACCOUNTS**

## **Pension costs**

The charity operates a defined contribution plan for its employees. A defined contribution plan is a pension plan under which the company pays fixed contributions into a separate entity. Once the contributions have been paid the company has no further payments obligations. The contributions are recognised as expenses when they fall due. Amounts not paid are shown in accruals in the balance sheet. The assets of the plan are held separately from the company in independently administered funds.

## **Statement of cash flows**

The charity is exempt from preparing a statement of cash flows on the grounds that it is a small charity

## **2 Company status**

The charity is an unincorporated organisation that is controlled by the trustees.

**Wild Young Parents Project NOTES TO THE ACCOUNTS**

## **for the year ended 31 December 2021**

## **1 Accounting policies**

## **Basis of preparation**

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2015) - (Charities SORP (FRS 102)), the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) and the Companies Act 2006.

The financial statements are prepared in sterling, which is the functional currency of the charity. Monetary amounts in these financial statements are rounded to the nearest £.

The charity constitutes a public benefit entity as defined by FRS102.

## **Change in basis of accounting or to previous accounts**

There has been no change to the accounting policies (valuation rules and method of accounting) since last year and no changes have been made to accounts for previous years.

## **Income**

Recognition of Income is included in the Statement of Financial Activities (SoFA) when the income charity becomes entitled to, and virtually certain to receive, the income and the amount of the income can be measured with sufficient reliability.

|Income with|Where income has related expenditure the income and related expenditure is|
|---|---|
|related expenditure|reported gross in the SoFA.|
|Donations and|Voluntary income received by way of grants, donations and gifts is included|
|legacies|in the the SoFA when receivable and only when the Charity has|
||unconditional entitlement to the income.|
|Tax reclaims on|Income from tax reclaims is included in the SoFA at the same time as the|
|donations and gifts|<br>gift/donation to which it relates.|
|Donated services|These are only included in income (with an equivalent amount in|
|and facilities|expenditure) where the benefit to the Charity is reasonably quantifiable,|
||measurable and material.|
|Volunteer help|The value of any volunteer help received is not included in the accounts.|
|Investment income|This is included in the accounts when receivable.|
|Gains/(losses) on|This includes any gain or loss resulting from revaluing investments to market|

|**Expenditure**||
|Recognition of|Expenditure is recognised on an accruals basis. Expenditure includes any|
|expenditure|VAT which cannot be fully recovered, and is reported as part of the|
||expenditure to which it relates.|
|Expenditure on|These comprise the costs associated with attracting voluntary income,|
|raising funds|fundraising trading costs and investment management costs.|

||for grants that have been approved by the trustees at the end of the year but|
||not yet paid.|

||statutory requirements of the Charity, including any audit/independent|
||examination fees, costs linked to the strategic management of the Charity,|

## **Taxation**

The charity is exempt from corporation tax on its charitable activities.
