Section C Ob"ectives and activities To relieve the poverty ar￿ advance the education of orphans in Nepal, in particular but not exdusively. those of the LBU orphanage situated in the Kathmandu ValEey. by provtsion of facilities and financial assistan￿. Summary ofthe objects of the charity set out in its governing document TAR March 2012 Chikl Action Nepal was set up in 2￿3 after one of its trustees established an orphanage (LBU) in Kathmandu in 2002. Our first home had 10 boys and 10 girls and reached its full capacity. Therefore, VE opened a second home in 2009 to welcome 20 more children who have lost Iheir parents and were at risk of becoming seNants, prostitutes or str*t children. Managing two houses became very drfficult as rt is hard to find good staff and we thought we could not spend as much time wtth eath child individually, which is what makes CAN'S approach so special. Therefcfe. as some of our children leave LBU after securing a job and a Icrfjging, we are back to having one house and 20 chiklren again. That way we can realty create a family atmosphere and make the children feel like any other chiEdren. In determining our programme each year. vle have regard to both the Charity Commission's general guidance on public benefft and the prevention and relief of poverty for the public benefft. The trustees always ensure that tt programmes we undertake are in line with our charitsble objects and aims. Child Action Nepal. through one of its trustees. establishes orphanages in Nepal and, to ensure that each orphan re￿iVeS the maximum care and attention. we limit our homes to a maximum of 20 children. Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects {include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefft) The activities currently carried out for the public tenefft by the charity include: EdU￿￿10n. the Children go to one of the best schools in Kathmandu. Once they have reached the equivalent of GCSE level. the Charity keeps on supporting the ¢hildren through vocational training. college or universty, depending on their abilty. Healthcare: thildren and local staffs healthcare costs are entirely covered by the Charity. In addition to on%oing treatment for some of the children. we organise visits to the dentist and the ophthalmologist at least On￿ a yearfor everybc¥Jy. We also have the children and staff vaccinated Cultural: We regularEy organise vists to exhibitsons as well as trips so that the thildren have a good knowledge of their country. In addÉiion, the hildren are Ixwht up according to Nepalese customs and ￿lebrating the main festivals. That way we prepare them to become welkirrtegrated citEens of Nepal. We select the children who need the most help, i.e. the ones who have the poorest bad(ground. have lost one or both of their parents and are the most at risk of ending up as street children, servants or kYostiiLrtes because their exteTrJed family ￿nn0t support them. We employ local staff supervised by a local commtttee. which ensures that we pay °local prices- for all our expenses. In addition to school education. we educAte the children to be self-SLrfficient and, during their vacatti)ns, to take care of their dothes and shoes, and help with the cooking and cleaning of the house. Our trust&s are unpaid al￿ personally finance some of the tharity's ongoing expenses so that CAN has only minimal expenditure in the UK and all donations are used dirediy for the benefft of the Chitdren. Section D Achievements and performance During most of 2021, our children had to observe the lock-down in Kathmandu and keep on studying remotely. The courses were limited in number and time, and we did not have enough laptops, so their education slowed down. Now all the children are back to school, colleges and universÉlies. This has increased our transportation costs as they are going to different places using public transportation, sthool buses or LBU'S motort)ikes. One of our children completed his Bsc in Compuler scien￿ in a universty offering the same program as the Unrversity of Wolverhampton in the UK. He started to work and next year will aFply for a Master5 in the UK. The younger childrens. results were seriously dovm. and they had lost the habit of studying hard during lod( down. Therefore. we organised for the elder children to control and correct their homework as well give them some additional exercises and guidance in the subjects they were failing. Their results have very much improved, and they are also hap￿er in themselves and more driven. Summary ofthe main achievements of the charity during the year We are happy to report that all our children are hea￿hy. The two operations conducted at the beginning of the year were successful giving more hearing and breathing comfort to Bikash and Parkash. In spite of being vaccinated, a few of our children developed covid and a couple of them caught dengue fever but li vras a light version of trf)th diseases. and they recovered after 2-3 days at home. We have rented the house untrl April 2023 but will then have to move out because the owner wants to conduct some construction work and convert some of the buildings to shops and addTlional flats. Therefore, we have started looking for a new house. pri￿ have increased however and we will need to raise more funds to ¢over the addrtional cosL on￿ we have found a new home. we will start welcoming some new Ghildren to repla￿ the older one who are now indeFendent and have left the home. In the UK. our tru*ees. wfK) are all volunteers, had less time to raise funds. However we managed to raise funds for new solar panels and raised more than £10.01]O for one of our eldest girfs to be able to come to the UK and study for a Masterfs degree at Greenwich Unbversty. Her lodging and Itving costs are supwrted by one of ourtrustees and do not cost anything to the tharity. 2023 ￿111 be the 20th Anniversary of the Charity. so we plan to organise number of fundraising and irfformation events to ￿lebrate.
