Rt Revd Paul Butler (Chair)

Mrs Rosemary Butler (Treasurer)

Mr Will Perry

Mrs Jane Perry

Objects

‘The trustees shall hold the trust fund and its income upon trust to apply them for the following objects in the Diocese of Byumba, Rwanda

  1. The relief of poverty

  2. The provision of education for children, young people and adults.

  3. The promotion of the Christian religion.

The year in review

The Trust works solely in and with the Diocese of Byumba in Rwanda (Anglican Church of Rwanda).

The Diocese has continued its work, under the leadership of Bishop Emmanuel Ngendehayo, to engage in the making known of the good news of Jesus Christ through word and deed. This includes regular engagement in education through local schools, both primary and secondary. It also runs a number of vocational training centres. It works to relieve poverty. In Byumba Town this is primarily through Hannah Ministries. This work provides support through the provision of meals, and supporting craft work to a range of families headed by the eldest child (now often an adult themselves). 16 families are helped on a regular basis.

There continues to be work undertaken to support widows, through their craft work being sold locally.

The Diocese is committed to training new catechists and clergy. It also seeks to undertake ongoing training and development of both catechists (some becoming clergy through the further training) and clergy. This is undertaken through the Diocesan Bible School.

The general funds are used for these purposes around the Diocese.

During this year there was a particular project led by Rob Hoys (a water engineer based in Sussex) to help build and maintain some new water

tanks in a number of parishes. Rob went to Byumba at his own expense to supervise the building and installation of these tanks. Access to water remains a major challenge for many in rural areas so this project is a significant help to the communities supplied. Rob also taught local people so that further tanks could be provided locally. This project amounted to just over 50% of the Trusts support for the Diocese during the year.

Hence for the first time in many years the Trust found itself with a turnover of more than £25,000 requiring an independent examination of its accounts after many years of smaller turn over.

Throughout the year the Diocese has been efficient in informing the Trust of safe receipt of funds (always done through international bank transfer), and of committing to use the funds for the stated purposes. Rob Hoys was also able to confirm the continued work of Hannah Ministries

Looking ahead

It is anticipated that the regular gifts from a small number of individuals will continue. It is anticipated that in the year 2023-4 the Trust will return to a turnover under £25,000. Although a further water project or other matter would potentially alter this anticipation.

It is also expected that the Chair and Treasurer will be able to visit Byumba having been unable to do so since 2019 due to the Covid pandemic.

Independent Examiner’s Report to the Trustees of the Friends of Byumba Trust for the year ended 31 January 2023

I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the charity for the year ended 31 January 2023.

Responsibilities and basis of the report

As the charity’s trustees you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’).

I report in respect of my examination of the charity’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directors given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the act.

Independent examiner’s statement

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

  1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by section 130 of the act; or

  2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or 3. the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
