Foreword
During the past year the pandemic has meant that life has become
more drff￿lI for everyone, but losing the support of Day Centres and
outsMJe help has caused so much anxiety and slress for those
depending on these resources. Mind ActNe has prov•Jed a lrfeline
by conb'nuing to support us all in so many ways.
During the summer monlhs we were ab￿ to meet outside foi piGni¢s.
live music and quizzes. We went lo Btyth and had fish and chips ¢)n
Ai the end of last year. we were gNen tablets to enable us to keep in
touch via z¢XJm meetings and now have a coffee moming, an
exercise class and an afternoon get-l¢)Jether. 11 is so gocKI catching
up wrth everyone and having a chat and so important to actualty Sae
peop￿ after being isolated for so loThJ.
At Christmas we were given a t*autrful bouquet of flowers a￿1 a
hamper which were g￿alty appreciated.
Mind Ath"ve sent oul birthday cards and special anniversary cards
and every week we rerEive a telephone call. which ensured we are
not Sonely ar￿ provKled advi¢e and comfort when necessary. No
matter what ￿ happening we a￿ayS seem lo end the conversation
with 8 gocrtj laugh and il makes such a difference to one's day.
The support given by Mind Active during the pandemic ha$ been
outstanding, il brings so much happiness and urKlerslanding to so
many people. I cannot begin lo thank Ihem enough for all they have
done and are doing. They are conslantty trying to find ways of
making life more enioyable. they work so hard and put so much
enetgy arvj ci)mpassion into everything they do.
I wish them all the very best for future, they really do 'make a

expanding and proving very popular. new feslrictions Ordered

email presence provKling 100 question weekly qU￿e5, flee crafts.

used Ihese as a m(Ke manageable way to suppo(1 meaningful
engagement wlh their residefjts, and easily built into their routine as
dienl mental heatth became a concem.
Eventualty what we believed lo be short-lem support developed into
major undertaking throughout the crisis and the nuM￿￿[S of homes
requesting our support more than doubled, including from across the

It was a greal Telief w￿n we were able lo reinlrcmluce safe outdoor

members also actively ensured everyone enjoyed themselves
safely and Ihal membgfs of the public did not cross the taped
barrier at any time.
Our outdoor programme proved highly successful involving people
frorn their ov4n horTTres that had b￿n Sh￿klIng and effectively
isolated and lonely for 3 long months. 11 was wonderful lo wilness
how quickty their onf￿ence9reW over the weeks, and the pleasure
they drew fiom being togett￿r and outd{￿)rn in the sunny fresh ali.
During the fine ￿attr￿ and untd bcal restrictions once again
fOr￿d our Cl￿nts lo withdraw back into their homes, we supported
ser*5 of picni¢s, ¢M¢ert$. promenade fLsh and chip day and
exeruse sessions. Not onty was every event VRII attendèd, bLrt
many of the pas8ing public slopped in awe witnessirNJ the party
atmOSp￿{e and even enjoyed watching benefietaries dancing
apart-together, and some even sang ar￿ da￿r￿ along to the
music. smiling a5 they walked on.
Safety was paramount. and some parts'cipants without any Means
of transport aThJ fearful of using publK buses, were pTovided with
free taxi travel. This ensured no one was financially ex¢luded and
therelore everyone benefitted fulty from the much need mental and
wellbeing advantages these sessions provided, ￿8$SUred as
team members continually monrtored and controlled the QUId￿r

As our client groups have contsnualty out of our reach
during lockdown, we have embraod digital lechnotogies lo
ensure remain ￿nnect&￿ and dienls feel Sess wlaled and

We began by increasing the use of familiar email. text.
telephone calls and Iradrtional post. but as we moved inlo the
second lockdown, rt became obvious that th15 alone was not
enough and people rttded lo see each other. Expk>iatory
steps using Zoom followed with d¢)orstep drops ol Tablet
devices at the homes ol shielded clients, following which we
quite quickty began our fiv51 Zoom sessions. This proved lo be
a $unificanl new development in our ra￿ to overc(¥ne the
reported hamful effecls ol pcolonged isolation.

been supporting men's groups in resbdential care arKJ nur51TrJ
homes. even bringing different groups togethei lo enjoy ioint

as homes locked-down, the lace-lo.face group sessK*ns were for
the lime being posty)oned. bul we Doll￿d as merb INing alone in
their own homes also wilhdTew Irom society. their ￿ed$ became
a much bigger concem. Once again Zoorn became a platform ol
social inclusion and engagement and once clients got lo grtps
with the lechnolcM3y. fourKI the gel-logelhers enjoyable and
interesting, sharing 51ories, showing photos and objects thus
stimulaliDg Conversat￿￿, smiles and laughter. liftirrfJ mood arKI

Key Landline Support and Team Engagement
Al the beginning of Ihe year, we started with the UK in lolal
emergency lockdown ar￿ we kr￿4 most of our cl￿￿1$ al home
had no one close living nearby to reassure them From day one,
we intr(xYurth weekly la￿lline support. which proved invaluable
for maintaining contact. ensuring clier￿. needs were being mel
and they were safe. The old-fashiored phone was for most. Ihe
only oltechnol￿3Y they understo(*J and lelt c0nhdentv￿Ih,
bul proved a vrtal lifeline for their mental wellbeing. Hearing a
familiar Voice, being able lo talk things through and knowng
s<)meone 'oul there, cared. helped our h￿hlY vulnerable older
people to gel through the lonelir*s5 and fear of infed¢on.
Even as intr(#Juced digital communication via social med
plarfomis. as the country later moved towards stay-atthome
reslncb.ons and SLsbsequenl l¢)ckdowns, there was a small
minority for whom the house te￿phOne continued lo be ￿1r
onky link with the outside world and our larKlline support
continued Ihfoughoul and into the new year.
It was also important that we mabntsined regular ¢ontact wlth
our volunteer team and weekty email updates became another
key component to keep them InforTned arKI conneded over the
long periods of lockdown and tired ieslnctions Mainlainiro links
