Trustee and Dlrector8 Inductlon and Tralning
The Kaleidoscope Plus Group undertook a review of the skills on the charity's board of trustees during
201912020 and as previously reported, recruited five new members during that year. The pandemic
however has resulted in the need for some of our board members to stand down from their positions to
focus on personal and professional priorities. This led to vacancies on the board which are being recruited
to. Our members come from varying backgrounds ranging from PR and marketing, legal and the
commercial sectors and each new member is required lo undertake a structured induction program which
consists of providing information on their responsibilities as a Trustee together with the history and intended
direction of the charity. All are provided with a copy of the constitution. current business plan and policies
relating to confidentiality, safeguarding, terms of reference and our code of conduct amongst other
overarching governance related information. Throughout the year. all Trustees are given regular training
in key issues arising which are pertinent to the charity and their duties and responsibilities as trustees. This
has also now been supplemented with an online portal for them lo access in their own tirne. As with
members of staff. board members are required lo undertake mandatory training elements and completion
rates are recorded and monitored. They also re￿$ve training in Mental Health First Aid for which we have
accredited trainers.
On an annual basis, an 'away day. is organised which concenlrales on the key issues for the chaTIty,
allowing the board lo take stock and consider future development, along with reviewing updates in
charitable law. governance and how they impact on the duties of the Trustees. The trustees have been
heavily involved in informing and monitoring the charity's business plan which sets out our vision and
approach until 2023.
All Trustees are encouraged to involve themselves in areas of particular interest to them through close
involvement with the management, staff, and users of the charity's services. This helps Trustees to
develop the overall strategic direction and does not delracl from the Trustee's primary responsibilities to
the charity.
During the year, a formal review of our governance structure and pro¢esses has also taken place, through
which several recommendations to strengthen our approach have been identified. 202112022 will be used
to work through these with an aim of achieving a kitemark demonstrating even better governance of
the charity.

How Our Actlvitles Dellver Publle Benefit
The Trustees have referred to the Charity Commission's general guidance on public benefit and feel that
the existing aims and values meet the requirement set out for small charities. A review of the mission aim5,
and core values has been undertaken and rt is fell that they remain relevant to the charity's purposes.
Mental Health covers a wide spectrum of illnesses from psychotic disorders such as bipolar through lo the
more common conditions such as anxiety and depression. Around one in four people have suffered from
a mental illness or are associated with someone who has and the annual cost of mental health problems
in England is estimated al £77 billion. The charty, along with many other mental health service providers
believe that there will be a mental health crisis when the aftermath of the pandemic is truly known.
Each day 15 people in the UK will lake thelr own lives with someone dying by suicide every 2 hours. A
total of 2,038 adults will be admitted to hospi181s in England and there will be around five million inpatient
days per year. There will be 912 detentions under the Mental Health Act 1983 of which around 385 will be
voluntary admissions.
Every year, 33 million prescriptions for anti-depressants are written in England and 16 million for sleeping
pills. anli-anxiety drugs or Iranquillisers. Mental health illness does not discriminate, il impacts people of
all ages and economic backgrounds. Some illnesses are clinically diagnosed whereas others are not which
makes it difficult lo determine the number of people requiring mental health service provision.
At The Kaleidoscope Plus Group, equal access lo all our services is of paramount importance. We monitor
our performance against both contractual and sector expectations across all service areas to ensure that
effective services are implemented., any gaps are easily identified and work with a wide range of
Commissioners to develop appropriate interventions.
During the year we have also
introduced several digital activities through which the wider public can engage and receive support.
We believe that equal access to our services is vital to our suc¢ess and that successfvl outcomes must be
sha￿d by all sections of the community.
Our main activrties for the year continued to meet The Kaleidoscope Plus Group's Mission and Aims and
were implemented through the provision of a number of services..

in rts journey of devising a formal approach, however the organisalion follows and adheres to the

pandemic, bul the charity undertook varK)us online events such as a pub quiz to generate fvnds.
FINANCIAL REVIEW
The Trustees note that overall. the financial performance for the year has been positive after gains from
investments and this is demonslraled in the results. However, the Charity's operating income of£2,142,910
12020.. £2.696.812) was less than its total operating expenditure before gains on investments by £81,793
12020 £133.204 profit). The fall in incorne is mainly due to the loss of a key contract during the last financial
year. The charity was able lo continue service delivery and sustain ils contract funding throughout the
pandemic and lockdown perKJd. The charity also won new business. The business strategies for income
diversification and revenue growth are included in the charities three- year business plan.

The Kaleidoscope Plus Group is conb'nulng a process of an on-going service review lo ensure that
relevance of service and quality, remain a key focus. The charity is making excellent progress in developing
its work in the wider Black Country region and beyond, including Staffordshire, Stoke on Trent, an

COVID has had an impact. not only on a national level but on 8 global level too. The charity's business
continuity plan meant that all serviees, except for the Care Home and ILS schemes, due to their very
nature. were able to operate remotely and continue supporting those whom il serves. Contractual targets
and relationships with commissioners remained throughout the period with commissioned income
confirmed and ¢onlinuing. Clearly the charity's ability lo fundraise has been affected as has the whole

Audrtor's responsibilities for the audtt of the financial statements

Year ended 31 March 2021
Our objectives are lo obtain reasonable assurance about whether the finanaal statements a$ a whole
are free from material misstatement. whether due to fraud or error, and to issue an audilorfs report that
includes our opinion. Reasonable assuran￿ is a high level of assurance bul is not a guarantee that an
audit conducted in accordance with ISAS IUKI will always detect a material misstatement when il exists.
Misstatements can arise from fraud or error and are considered material if, individually or in the
aggregate, they could reasonably be expected to influence the economic decisions of users taken on the
basis of the financial slatemenls.
Irregularities, including fraud, are instances of non-compliance with laws and regulations. We design
procedures in line with our re5ponsibililies, outlined above, to delecl material misststements in respect of
irregularities. including fraud. Based on our understanding of the ¢harty and its aclivilies, we identified
that the principal risks of non-compliance with laws and regulations related lo employment regulation.
fraud, and non-compliance wrth implementation of government support schemes relating to COVID-19.
and we considered the exlenl to which non-compliance might have a material effect on the financial
slalements. We also considered Ih05e law5 and regulations that have a direct impact on the preparation
of the financial stalemenls, such as the Companies Act 2006.
We evaluated the trustees, and management's incentives and opportunities for fraudulent manipulation
of the financial statements (including the risk of override of controls) and determined that the principal
risks were related lo posting manual joumal entries to manipulate financial performance, inapproprialely
shifting the liming and basis of revenue recognition, management bias through judgements and
assumptions in significant accounting eslimales, in particular in relation to fund accounting. and
Significant one-off or unusual transactions.
Our audit protsdures were designed to respond to those identified risks, including non-compliance with
laws and regulations lirregularities} and fraud that are material to the f5nancial statements. Our audit
procedures included but were not limited to..
Discussing with the trustees and management their policies and pmcedures regarding compliance
with laws and regulab'ons-.
Communicating identified laws and regulations throughout our engagement team and remaining
alert to any indications of non-compliance throughout our audiL and
Considering the risk of aels by the charity which were contrary to applicable laws and regulations,
including fraud.
Our audit procedures in relation to fraud included but were not limited to..
Making enquiries of the Iruslees and management on whether they had knowledge of any aelual,
suspected, or alleged fraud.
Gaining an understsnding of the intemal controls established to mitigate risks related lo fraud.
Discussing amongst the engagement team the risks of fraud., and
Addressing the risks of fraud through management override of controls by perfomiing joumal entry
testing.
There are inherent limitslions in the audit procedures descrited above and the primary responsibility for
the prevention and detection of irregulaiilie5 including fraud rests with management. As with any audit,

there remained o risk of non-detection of irregularities, as these may involve collusion, forgery, Intentional

A fLtrther description of our responsibilities for the audit of the financial statements is located on the
