Review of the Year and Future PIAn8
Th¢ Charity continued to fulfil its objectives as outlined above. As a result of the Covid-19
pandemic, th¢ physical archive was not accessible to the public for the first few months of the 2021-
22 financial year. although access by t¢achers, students, acad¢mi¢ researchers and memb¢rs of the
public via the website continued.
Despite the impact of the pandemic, it was a successful year for the Archive and a numbcr of proj¢ots
w¢r¢ progress¢d in addition to the ongoing digitisation work. Th¢s¢ included three new oral history
interviews, a scoping exercise to find mat¢rial relating to African, Caribbean or Asian staff within
the coll¢ction and the writing of a Digitsl Pr¢s¢rvation Strategy.
It was also a good year for the Archive's outreach work, with 8taff giving remote talks to a Datio4al
audience, including onc hosted by the National Archive and presenied al the annual Business
Archive Council Scotland conference. In addition, the Archive added 3421 Dew twitter followers
and created an Instagram account to bolster its social media work.
The Archive's web resources attract substantial numbers of visitors. the digitis¢d JS Journal
collectlOD provides a valuable historical sourc¢, and selections from the pap¢r. audio. film and video
collection have been trnnsferr¢d to a digital forn]at. both to preserve them and to make them more
accessible. The online ¢8tslogue now makes it possible to access more than 90.000 catalogye
descriptions and digital imag¢s from the Archive.
Due to the multi-year agreements in place with all of the Archive's current fi)nd¢r base, it is not
expected that the epidemic will have a la51ing ¢ffe¢t on the financial situation of the Archive.
Discussions are continuing on moving the Archive to the new Museum of London site at
Smithfield's, which is expected to open by 2026.
The above report has been prepared in accordance with the spe¢ial provisions of Part 15 of the
Companies Act 2006 relating io small companies.
Chari
and Public Benefit
The Trustees are aware of the Charity Governance Code, as updated in 2020. which sets out th¢
principles and recommended PTactice for good governance within the sector. The trustees reco8niFe
that a commitment to meeting the charity's public benefit is an ongoing requirement and have dye
regard to it. The Charity h&s reviewed its governance arrangements against the principles within the

The Sainsbury Archive, which is open without charge, is visited not only by the public generally
but also by students, t¢achers and other academic researchers interested in Britain's food retailing
heritage. The Archive, as referred to elsewhere in the Trustees, Report, provides an invaluable
insight and educational resource into tbe way in which retailing and shopping habits have chang
since the mid-19th century, as well as providing valuable information on the nation's eating habjts
over that period. and to that extent it is unique. Not only Gan the Archive be visited. but there is on-
line access to the Arcbive catalogue, the JS Journal collection and an extensive website. Access to
the website can be found at www.saiDsburyarchive.org.uk
Risk Assesslnent
The Trustees have exarnined the major strategic, business and operational risks to which the Charity
may be exposed and systems are in place adcquate to meet such potential risks as the Trustees have
identified. The Trust¢¢s continue to be vigilant and to keep processes under r¢view.
The Trustees identified the willingness of funders to continu¢ their support to constitute a significant
risk. This is mitigat¢d by ongoing review of financial for¢casts and the confinnation of support by
the key donors over several years.
A fillther significant risk is the pbysical risks to the materials in th¢ Archive (from f￿e, theft etc)
wbich is mitigated by housing the Arcbive ID tbe Museum of London, with reliance on the
Museum's infrastructure and procedures. Representatives of the Museum of London attend trustFe
meetings to address any concerns which may arise in this area.
