## **Soup, Soap & Salvation** 

Our ultimate goal is to reach out with our King’s love to the oppressed in their struggles and build a BRIDGE from the church to the afflicted. 

## **Aim & Purpose** 

Bridge of Love Trust (BOL) is a non-profit organisation and a registered UK Charity (Charity No: 1096302). Rev G I Ebenezer is the chairman of BOL. 

The Trust was started with the purpose of protecting and supporting the oppressed in society, especially widows and orphans. The trustees are involved in various welfare initiatives to safeguard the interests of the poor, who are often the victims of civil war in Sri Lanka.

Bridge of Love confines itself to community development in the Northern and Eastern provinces of Sri Lanka and the tribal areas in Tamil Nadu, South India. Over the past fourteen and a half years we have been financially supporting registered local organisations and churches who work among the oppressed, vulnerable & abandoned, poor & needy, widows, orphans, child labour victims, the underprivileged, young offenders, the persecuted and war victims in Sri Lanka and India. 

We provide monthly financial support to the vast majority of our projects.  In addition to our regular financial support, we identify and assess where there is a specific need, and approach individuals & organisations for aid and financial help. We then channel these funds to trustworthy organisations to meet their needs. We try our best to ensure that the organisations we support are genuine. 

We help people regardless of race or religion.

## **Fundraisin g** 

We raise money for our causes through Standing Orders, Gift Aid/ donations from our friends and family / Church members. We do not raise money from the public. Occasionally, friends raise money (from their friends and family members) for a specific Charity cause through the ‘Virgin Money Giving’ website. 

We do not use any “commercial participator” or professional fund-raiser” and we do not have any fundraising agreement with anyone. Therefore, the following does not apply to us in relations to ‘Compliance with the Fundraising Regulator’s voluntary regulation scheme’. 

- The charity’s approach to fundraising activity, and in particular whether a professional fundraiser or commercial participator was used. 

- Details of any voluntary fundraising schemes or standards which the charity or anyone fundraising on its behalf has agreed to.

## **Summar of Achievements y** 

## **Covid19 Relief Projects** 

Covid19 has crippled the Sri Lankan economy and has highly impacted the livelihood of the poor & needy, who are already struggling to make ends meet. 

Mr Sam Nesan Durasamy, Trustee of Bridge of Love (BOL), organised and sponsored a covid19 relief project worth more than 950 for the poor and needy in Urumpirai, Jaffna. He also sponsored more than £250 for the Covid relief carried out by Rev Vasanthan of Canaan. 

Mr Daniel Jebanesan Duraisamy organised covid19 relief projects worth £2500 for the poor and needy in Maruthanarmadam, Jaffna. This was locally coordinated by CHRISTA SEVA ASHRAM Jaffna. A number of ASHRAM well-wishers contributed towards this project. Daniel and Sam also raised funds from their friends, family members and organisations. 

Miss Shanthi Ponnu coordinated Covid19 relief projects worth more than £650 in Mullaitheevu and Mannar districts. 

Rev Karunanithi coordinated Covid19 relief projects worth more than £1000 in Batticaloa district. 

Rev Kathireson coordinated Covid19 relief projects worth more than £300 for the Pita Kotte slum dwellers in Colombo district. 

Br Stephen coordinated Covid19 relief projects worth more than £200 for the poor & needy in Trichy, India.  Br Sutharshan Gopalan is the sponsor of this project. 

In total, we sent **£5,993** for Covid19 relief projects.

In 2020, we sent more than £7,400 for the following orphanages.

Mr Luke Mahendra, Treasurer of Bridge of Love (BOL), is the coordinator and main sponsor of the Canaan children’s homes (listed above). Mr Veeman Masillamany is the coordinator of ASI and Mrs Jeeva Algendran is the coordinator of Happy Home in Kotagala.

In 2020, we sent more than £9,700 for the following projects.

## **Educational Projects** 

- We run an Evening Study programme for the slum children in Pittakotte, Colombo. We are renting a hall to conduct educational and religious activities for the people who live in slum areas in Pita Kotte. We donated more than £1,400 for this project in 2020. 

- Tuition for Untouchables: Dalit also called Outcasts, are group of people traditionally

regarded as Untouchables. While the discrimination based on caste system (not the caste system itself) has been abolished under the Indian constitution, there is still discrimination and prejudice against Dalits. Jayakumar, a social worker, and his wife have been providing free evening tuition for the poor outcaste children in Trichy, South India for more than nine years.  We contributed more than £200 of financial assistance towards the running of this excellent community service in 2020. 

- Due to the closest local government school being situated 4 Km away, most kids in the two remote villages in Puthukkudiyirrupu, Sri Lanka had to walk to school and only attended school 2 or 3 days a week. Some didn’t go to school at all due to the lack of transport. Transportation via a three wheeler was initiated and organised by the Centre of Hope and Bridge of Love financially supports this worthwhile project. We contributed more than £200 of financial assistance towards this transportation project in 2020. 

In total, we sent £6,963 in 2020 for educational projects. (This includes £5,000 raised in 2019 for the Evening Study programme for the underprivileged children Urumpirai, Jaffna). 

## **Poor, Sick & Needy and Other** 

- In 2020, we donated more than £1,300 for the poor & needy / war victims in Batticaloa. Rev Karunanithi is our local project coordinator. 

- In 2020, we donated more than £700 for the poor & needy in Jaffna district. Br Jesuthasan and Br Sutharshan are the sponsors of this project. 

- We have been providing financial support to 10 underprivileged pastors in Batticaloa for more than thirteen years. In 2020, we donated more than £1,100 for this project and Rev Karunanithi is our local project coordinator. 

- Mr Luke Mahendra, Treasurer of Bridge of Love (BOL), is the coordinator and the sponsor of Cannan poor pastors and he donated more than £2,500 in 2020. 

- We donated more than £100 for the handicapped people in Puthukkudiyirrupu area. Rev Suresh Paul is our local project coordinator.

- Br Sutharshan Gopalan donated more than £375 for the children affected by HIV & AIDS in Chennai. Dr John Daniel is our local coordinator. 

In total, we sent more than £7,300 for these projects. 

## **Christmas Gifts** 

In December 2020, we sent more than **£3,432** worth of Christmas presents to the poor & needy in Jaffna, Batticaloa, Mannar, Pita Kotte, Dehiwela and Trichy. Jaffna Ashram leader, Rev Karunanithi, Rev Kathireson and Br Stephen coordinated these projects for Bridge of Love.

As the Charity's Trustees you are reswnsible for the preparation of the Accounts: you
consider that the audit requirement of section 43 (2) of the Charities Aci 1993, ("the Act")
does not apply. Ii is our responsibility to state, on the basis of procedures specified in the
General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners under section 43 (7) of the Act,
whether particular matters have come to our attention.
BASIS OF INDEPENDENT ELIMINER'S REPORT
Our examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the
Charity Commissioners. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by
the Charity and a comparison of the Accounts presented with those records. It also includes
consideration of an), unusual items or disclosures the Accounts, and seeking explanations
from you as Trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not
provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently we do not
express an audit opinion on the view given by the Accounts.
