Trustees’ Annual Report for the period

From1 July 2023 Period start date To 30 June 2024 Period end date

Charity name: Rotary Club of Ashby de la Zouch Castle Trust Fund

Charity registration number: 1096225

Objectives and Activities

Summary of the purposes of the charity as set out in its governing document.

Rotary International is an international service organisation whose stated human rights purpose is to bring together professional and business leaders to provide humanitarian services, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and to advance goodwill and peace around the world.

Summary of the main activities in relation to those purposes for the public benefit, in particular, the activities, projects or services identified in the accounts.

Again, the two main fund-raising activities of the year were the Ashby Rotary Clubs Santa Sleigh Collection and the Ashby Santa Fun Run and Walk which produced income to enable us to make substantial donations to our chosen charities, Staunton Harold Sailability Trust £4324 and me & dee, Home-Start North West Leicestershire and Bright Hope in North West Leicestershire who each received £2900.

We have continued our environmental work in Ashby with members and other volunteers working on a volunteer basis with weekly litter picks, maintenance of gardens including our own Peace Garden in the centre of town and improvements to other facilities including the Gilwiskaw Brook which runs through Ashby.

We have provided members and volunteers to man car parking facilities at the National Forest Conkers centre for the annual fireworks display and at a local farm for a steam rally to assist those organisations to raise funds for local charities.

Statement confirming whether the trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit.

The trustees have had regard to such guidance.

Membership Services – The general running of the club and members’ welfare. The club has maintained numbers at a similar level throughout the year and various social events have been organised for the benefit of members. Contact is maintained with members who are unable to attend meetings on a weekly basis, such as due to ill health or work commitments.

Community Service – To give help and guidance to enable all members to identify and address the needs of the local community of Ashby and the surrounding area, using their personal skills and abilities. The club has supported and supplied manpower to many local events and has promoted community cohesion and helped to enrich the local area.

Environmental – Projects and activities that tackle local issues and global climate change. Successful projects have included litter picking, recycling of waste, maintenance of the Rotary Peace Garden which was established in the town centre in 2018 and has encouraged walking and cycling.

International – To organise and participate in fund raising events to support charities working mainly outside the UK and the Rotary Foundation, Rotary’s own charity which funds projects in the UK and throughout the world. The club has raised funds to donate to the Morocco Earthquake Response Fund, Mercy Ships, Ukrainian Children and provided funds for Rotary End Polio Now campaign.

Youth – To offer young people in the local community the platforms to unlock their potential, develop their skills and broaden their horizons. Competitions have been organised including Young Musician, Young Chef, Youth Speaks, Young Writer and Young Artist, all to encourage the development of the young people of the area. We also financed jointly with the other Rotary clubs in Ashby the Rotary Young Leaders Awards, an annual event over a week’s residual adventure course which is an intensive leadership experience organised by Rotary clubs where participants develop skills as a leader while having fun and making connections.

Ashby Santa Fun Run and Walk – A major fund-raiser for the club for the benefit of three nominated charities each year. The team meet throughout the year to determine the format for the day, which is usually the first Sunday in December. The 2023 event was a success, despite a fall of snow, raising over £10500 after expenses which allowed us to donate £2900 to each of the three nominated charities plus £1100 to Rotary Foundation and £1033 to other local charities supported by Rotary.

Independent Examiner’s Report on the Accounts for the Year Ended 30 June 2024

My examination was carried out in accordance with General Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently, I do not express an audit opinion on the accounts.

During the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention
