Review of 2023
2023 began V4ith a welcome sense of a return to nomiality followng the years of the pandemic and its after-
effects and with two successful prc¥Jrammes having been completed in the previous year. The Journey of
Understanding held in May again more than fulfilled its promise and preparations for a further Journey in
November were well-advanced when the events of October 7th in Gaza t￿k place. Needless to say, th8
programme was cancelled.
Journey of Understanding (Spring 23)
In April. a group of courageous participanls from Palestine and Israel travelled to Cyprus to take part in the
Journey of Understanding {JoU). This time around, participants were hosted in Agros, a village built on the
Tro¢idos Mountains in southwesl Cyprus. They travelled lo Cyprus wtth Encompass, Israeli Coordinator Yishai
Pulvermacher and Programme Manager Kussay AbuRahmeh. They were joined by facilitalors Suma Qawasmi.
iza Gold, Yonathan Keren and Tareq Jarrad, as well as Media Ccordinator Laurel Selby. General Manager

(continued)
Based on participant feedback from the previous Jou. this yearfs sessions followed a slightly different format
than usu81. This lime around, participants started the week in plen8ry workshops where they were intrOdU￿d to
Deep Democracy by facilitator Yonathan Keren. Originating in South Africa during the pivotal shift from apartheid
to democracy. Deep Democracy is a meth(yJ0l￿Y which revolves around acknowledging and trans￿nding
barriers to decision-making, priorilising inclusivity, and amplity'ng every voice within the collective. In one of
these sessions, participants were asked -what is the moment in which it tecomes impossible to see the other
side?" This session sparked an interesting discussion on forgiveness and guilt. Participants reflected that they
had become aware that they carry guill with them eVe￿Vhere they go 8nd doubt their own ability to forgive.. to
forgive others, the system and to forgive themselves. Other topics explored during the programm8 included
identity. the role of dignity in social interactions and pea￿bUildIng. the significance of national narrative5. and
participants. first-hand eXperien￿S of the (x)nflict.
Jusl like in previous Jou programmes. challenging physical activtlies that require collaboration and trust belween
participants formed a key component of the programme. Again, these took pla￿ 8t the Trodos Adventure Park
and included rock climbing. and other actwities. such as orienteering and centlP8de skiing, that relied on
communication. teamwork and leadership. Participants also visited Nicosia and the Home of Cooperation where
they explored the UN buffer zone and received a tour of the city focused on the history of conflict, resistance, co-
exist8nce and conflict resolution.
The final few days of the programme induded sessions on violent and non-violent resistance, the future of Israel
and Palestine, and culminated in a final session on reconciliation. During this discussion. participants were asked
to reflecl on what reconcilialion means to them and were introduced lo the four elements of reconciliation
dignity, justice, mercy and truth. The programme ended with the tradition81 celebration and closing ceremony
where they each shared r8fl8Ctions on their Jou experience. The atmosphere was charged wth posikn'vity and
optimism as participants expressed leaving Cyptus with "a renewed sense of hope.
Post Jou period
Subsequent to the successful prc*Jramme, it became clear that there were growing tensions, not only be￿een
Israelis and Palestinians but also wtthin Israel itself. Despite the tensions. planning for the Nov8mber
programme was well advanced. wlh scheduling, staffing. facilitation session plans. logistics for
venuelflightslfoodltransportation18ctivities, visa applications, flights all in pla￿. Then came the horrific events of
October 7th and the followng weeks and months in Israel and Gaza.
These caused not only the cancellation of the pr()Jramme (and an acceptance of the associated losses) but 81so
a rethinking of future activities and programmes once the war subsides. Even amongst what has be8n a
cohesive and determinedly peace-focused slaff group. inevitable tensions ar05e as a resull of 51aff on bolh sides
losing family members to the fighting. Discussion as to the appropriate roles and stance of team members led to
the resignation of our Israeli coordinator and the revision of our Mission statement to reinforce th6 organisation's
dedicalion to a non-violence approach.
Therefore. the search began for 8 new Israeli C￿rdInat0r. An amazing candidate. Ayala Shalev, becam8
available, due to the conclusion of a teen programme. similar to Jou. where she had been the Israeli
Coordinator. She also has training and experience in facilitation and connection to the communities from which
to recruit. After several impressiv8 and successful interviews with the new Regional Director {who has been our
c(￿OrdInat0[ in Pale51ine for almost 12 years) She was asked to join Encompass Trust as the new Israeli
Coordinator, and agreed to the nevAy drafted Mission Statement. She has been in training and preparation with
the Regional Coordinator and the Palestinian Ccordinator and given documentation to bring h8r up to speed and
help her understand hei responsibilities.

Current activities
Athough Encompass could not hold formal progr8mm8s in or out of the region due to th8 ongoing violenc8, W8
have created national on-line 'Check-in and Dialogue, groups. These groups provide a way for alumni to stay
connected, offer support lo one another, and share events as they unfold. They are monitored by sever81 st8ff
members to assure safety and provid8 an open, candid forum for discussion. Some outcomes of this group
include..
Emotional support for people vtho have experienc8d trauma.
Keeping people apprised of dangers.
Helping with transportation lo and from work or apFK>intments.
Finding refuge when there ar6 dosures.
Oblaining feedback on the direction Encompass needs to fo￿5 on in future program5.
Sharing of work and higher educationlscholarship OPFUtunities.
Another initiative in Palestine has been town meetings. sin￿ it is dangerous and neady impossible lo have a
regional meeting due to closures and settler attacks, some alumni have chosen to meet in their own cities, when
possible. They usually meet at coffee houses or restaurants, discussing the situation and how it has affected
them. as well as how they have and can overcome the everyday challerTrges they fa￿ due to the limitations being
imposed upon them by the occupation for￿S. Aso, being in the presence of people who have experienced what
life can be when both sides communicate. find commonality and create understsnding, h8lps them get through
another day of turmoil. We can note that our usual base in the West Bank, Tulkarem. was recently the subject of
major operation by the IDF, focused on the refugee camp that now forms part of the city, in which betsveen 10
and 14 wer8 killed (depending on your sources) and much destruction, so all of this is very 'dose to home,.
As having a Jou Programme is not possible at this lime, we are planning a training pr()Jr8mme for staff and
active alumni in capacity building. trauma identity and resilience and Deep D8mocracy. We have been working
on budget and logistics for an in-peison training, as well as on-line training. Examples of alumni who would be
considered are educators, activists, communty leaders and NGO v￿rkers, especially those who work with
displa￿ persons or refugees.
Lastly, the Regional Director, along with the Israeli and Palestinian coordinators, is having planning sessions to
determine the timing {according to events on the groundl and content for both local programmes. Intr8Pal and
Inlsrael, to take place as soon as pK)ssible. They will focus. as usual. on issues unique to each community. as
well as the conflict, as it pertains to them.
Looking ahead
Plans for 2024 can. for obvious reasons, only be tentative. However. Encompass is determin8d to mov8
forward, taking account of Ihe impact of the Gaza war both on individuals and on the wider situation, listening
attentively to those on the ground. In addition to reviewing our programme content and S￿e, we will 81so be
putting resources into supp)rting our staff and alumni to deal with the trauma of events in the region.
While it is hoped that programmes can be resumed in the autumn of 2024, this is by no means a given and we
11 be working in close collaboration wth those in Israel and Palestine to assess the sttuation and the
possibilities for developing furthei pr(yJramme5.
