## **– Lions Club of Tavistock CIO Trustees Annual Report Year End 30th June 2023**

The Lions Club of Tavistock started the financial year with organising the annual Tavistock Carnival Week which is a week of events culminating with the Carnival Procession. This was restarted after a two year hiatus when we were unable to have the carnival due to the Covid pandemic. This was a very successful week enabling us to donate over £3,700.00 to the various organisations which took part.

Our next major event was the annual Fireworks Display and despite a significant increase in the cost of the fireworks we were still able to make a large profit of £3,900.00.

The period up to Christmas was a very busy time with many events throughout November and December. The Trees of Light, which were again supported by Morris Bros covering all the operating costs, raised £12,000.00 which was distributed equally to four charities – Parkinson’s UK, St Luke’s Hospice, Plymouth and Cornwall Cancer Fund and Children’s Hospice South West.

We again sold Christmas Cards and ran a local Christmas card postal service which is much appreciated throughout the community. Our Barbeque was in full swing on Dickensian Evening together with our stall selling knitted toys and decorations, both making money for general charitable donations throughout the year.

We also did a bucket collection with Santa and his sleigh in attendance on the two weekends prior to Christmas and Santa and his sleigh again visited the primary schools in the area distributing over £1,000.00 worth of presents to the schools.

In January we started collecting aid for Ukraine – we had collection points around the town and organised several collection days in the local Tesco where people were able to purchase goods to donate. We were greatly supported in this venture by Sovereign Wines who gave us space in their warehouse to sort and pack the aid. A bucket collection was also arranged which raised funds to support the transportation of the aid to Warsaw before it was taken on to Ukraine. Together with members of Callington Lions, four of our members took part in three aid convoys to deliver the aid to Warsaw. The vans used

were generously loaned to us by Sovereign Wines and Fairway Furniture. All the costs have been met by additional fund raising and generous donations and have not therefore impacted on our normal charitable activities.

Overall for the year we were able to make financial donations to various charities and good causes amounting to £26,500.00

The club continues with many community service activities including maintaining a traffic island on one of the main roads leading into the town and organising road closures for the Remembrance Day and St George’s Day Parades as well as supporting other organisations with their own events.

The administration costs of the Club have been covered by the members’ annual subscriptions which also cover dues to Lions Clubs International and the UK multiple district. All social activities were covered by the members.
