## **Chairman’s Report October 2023**

It has been a pleasure and a privilege to serve as Chairman of the UK Trust for the past 5½ years. How time has flown! Now it is time for me to step down and offer whatever support I can to the newly elected postholder. Christine is standing down as Secretary (after more years than I can remember) and we are so grateful to her for being such a faithful and dedicated servant of the UK Trust during this time. We are also very grateful to those who have expressed a willingness to take on these responsibilities going forward. Ruth will also be standing down as a trustee, but will continue in her invaluable role as the Web Site and Social Media Co-ordinator.

Other officers are due to be re-elected at our meeting (assuming nobody else wishes to resign) and we also have the pleasure of electing two new trustees, as together we look forward to some exciting times for Phakamisa and the UK Trust.

Whilst there have been many challenges and causes for concern during the past year or two, there has also been plenty to thank God for in his dealings with Phakamisa, not least in bringing Zethu to the UK in September this year for her first visit. Those of us who were there will remember for a long time the quiz in Melbourne, when one of the questions asked us to guess Zethu’s favourite African animal. I don’t think a single team had guessed correctly when she gave her answer - dog! We shall spend some time reflecting on the visit during our meeting this morning, but overall, it seems to have been very well received and supported. I cannot express adequately my sincere and heartfelt thanks to all who organised, promoted, hosted, transported, accommodated, cooked or helped in any other way, enabling Zethu’s visit to run so smoothly. A number of items urgently needed by Phakamisa have been funded directly as a result of this visit.

Recently, the UK Trust has received another generous legacy. This one is from the USA, from the estate of the late Audrey Elizabeth Hertzberger, who passed way at the age of 88 in April last year. I expect Rachel will give us more information in her report. As trustees, we take seriously our duty as stewards of this money to ensure that it is wisely invested and distributed appropriately to areas of need. The current exchange rate is hugely favourable to Phakamisa.

Let us give thanks for all that God has done, and continues to do, through his Phakamisa servants in South Africa and its supporters around the world.

As always, my sincere thanks go to all our supporters and, of course, to our dedicated team of trustees, without whom the work of UK Trust would not be possible.

Bob Mawer
