WINCHESTER PHILHARMONIC CHOIR CHAIRMAN'S REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MAY 2024 This past year has been one of considerable achievement for the n￿Y re-named Wnchester Philharmonic Choir. The choir also moved rt5 rehearsal night from Fnday to Tuesday since Friday nwJht rehearsals had long been reccMJnised as putting off new members. A strong campaign of leafleting around the uty for the perf0rnan￿ of Handel's Messiah in January 2024 hel￿d to publicise these changes and resuhed in a pleasingly increased attendan￿ at the first rehearsal in September. Under Sarah Baldock's leadership, it had been deaded that the great popularity of the Messiah would also make rt a good choice to maTk the choirfs relaursch uThler its new name. This proved to be the case, and many of those who came along as potential new members in early September stayed on and signed up so thal the choifs nUm￿[S increased from around 70 to over 90. The autumn concert is traditionally a late November event in the Cathedral. but no date could be found. Instead, it was opted to run the event in M￿-janUary 2024. It was hoped thal the lad( ofother concerts in January could be beneficial. This made way for the opportunty to put on a Famity Christmas Carol cOn￿rt in early Dewnber in New Hall in Winchester College. It played to a fvll house and Sarah's coaching of the small children to ensure their keen participation was a joy to see. Ultimately the deasion to go wtth the January date for Ihe main cOn￿rt proved an ex￿lIent choi￿. and Messiah was a sell-out with significant numbers of people tumed away at the door. It has been said that this was the largest audience ever at the Cathedral for a choral event. The overall response was extremely grab'fying and was ￿rnmented by many as the best perfomiancE of me￿ah t￿Y had seen. The knock-on effect of hawng a January COn￿rt meant a shorter rehearsal period for the Spring concert which was planned lo be Rossini's Petite Messe Solonnelle, once described as nerther short nor solemn. Rossini is, of course, best known as an operatic composer and this is hi5 onty religiotjs wot1(. It comes across somewhat unusually and is a long way from the typical baroque styk8 of most thoral sacred music. The momentuln generated by the January cOn￿rt no doubt helped underpin the audience attendance on the nBJht and New Hall was close to its capacity. Again. there was very good feedback from attendees. The last event was the annual Come arKI Sing hekl at Sl Mich*l's Church on 27 April. It had already been decided that Mendelssohn's evergreen Elijah would be a go(xJ Choi￿ to follow Messiah. We hoped that il would conb'nLt8 lo attract more singers singing in English is a posib've selling point and also ensure a good audien￿. Running selected choruses from Elijah for the Come arKI Sing was planned to help with recruitment and rt was a sell~out on the day. The result will be measured by the numbers who come alorrfJ to the first rehearsals in September - but the hoFe is that it could take the total membership to iusl over 1￿. After a year of transition, Wnchester Philham)onic Choir can look to the future with the confidence of a strong membership base to carry rt fo￿ard. The choir continues to enjoy the benefit of its orchestra and rts Friends and other supporters. In parh'cular, the choir is grateful as ever for the support it receives from Winchester College and its links with Wncheskr College Choral Society. DavKI Rees Chai￿an Page 1

The resew are currenty £46,591 and the Executive committee is keeping thi5 figure under close rewew taking account of the liabilities the Choir is likely to incur. In the opinion of the Executive Committee the minimum prudent level of reserves is £25,000. this being the anticipated cost of one major COn￿rt during th8 year at Winchester Cathedral computed on a conservative basis. Charitable donations The total donats'ons for the period were nil. Finan¢lal roview The charity had net incoming resources on unrestricted furKls. a SUTplus, of £12,415 for the period as compared to a deficit of £1,060 for the previous Feriod. Together with the accumulated Su￿U5 brought forward from previous periods. the charity now has an accumulated surplus on unrestricted funds of £46,591 as compared to £34,176 for the previous period and £35,236 for the period before th& thus the reSoUr￿S available to ffinan￿ ath"vits"es have increased by 36% on the previous period. F￿uRE PLANS In the opinion of the Executive Committee no event Sin￿ the balan￿ sheet date significanuy affects the charity's financial position. Page 2
