FOLSS - 2021/2022 AGM Chair’s Report

Chairs report

How is the PTA run?

Welcome to FOLSS (Friends of Leonard Stanley School). We are a PTFA and registered charity run by a dedicated team of volunteers, who give up their time for free to fundraise for the benefit of the children at Leonard Stanley C of E (Aided) Primary School.

We actively fundraise to provide play and school equipment, pay towards school trips, solely fund the school swimming pool and put on events for parents and children throughout the year.

Annually we have to find £5,000 to pay for the baseline funding needs of the school (PGL coaches, Panto coaches, leaver’s gifts, Christmas party presents etc.).

This year we have raised £13846 and spent £17506. More details to follow in the Treasurer’s report.

Our committee is structured as follows:

How the PTA benefits pupils

Without a PTA in place, our school would have no fundraising support. We support Christmas parties, year 6 PGL and leavers, we provide the Panto buses each year, we support individual funding request from classes.

We work closely with Mr Green, the Governors and all the teachers to understand what is needed - and we are really proud of what has been achieved this year.

Key successes from this academic year

This year has been a really positive year for FOLSS in terms of being able to run events and we have seen great support from school families – so thank you.

We have also been able to support individual classes more heavily this year – from funding gardening projects in Key stage one right up to coordinating and funding many of the Year six leavers activities. It is a huge privilege for all of us on FOLSS to be able to work closely with the school and feel we can make a difference.

I think we would all agree our biggest success this year was our first Christmas Fayre – what an amazing event that was. It would be remiss here not to mention Rob Burrows, who was launched into FOLSS with the task of organising this event, Karen Williams who coordinated the games with Year 6 and Mr Allen. A spectacular job supported by the whole team.

We’ve also been able to install the new climbing frame and play equipment in the key stage one play area, which the children are absolutely loving.

Another highlight of this year was the Coronation tiles that were produced by all children. Thank you to Tile Trader for suppling the tiles, Grosvenor Practice for sponsoring the pens, to Kerrie Watt for organising it all and to the teachers for making it happen – I think we all loved getting those little gifts home.

We have also had some new FOLSS committee members this year, which has been amazing.

We hugely appreciate the time and effort every member of the team puts in, even taking days off to volunteer and run events. Everyone has jobs, kids and busy lives – so thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

School pool update

As we all know, one of our biggest challenges is re-building the school swimming pool. It was a devastating decision to take having to close this year, but we simply cannot put people at risk. We had currently had some plans drawn up for the repairs and re-build, and we are working with the Governors to put those plans out to tender. As soon as we know more details we will share. Our plan is to focus all fundraising next year on the pool – and we will be kicking this off with a Family Fun Day on Sunday 17th September.

Once we know how much we need to raise, we will be organising events, applying for grants and opening a Crowdfunding page. All help and support is appreciated so if you would like to get involved, please let us know.

Special thank yous

We have loads of people to thank this year. Firstly our committee as a whole, you have all gone above and beyond and FOLSS feels like a real team effort. Hopefully despite the chaos and stress, we all do enjoy it!

We do have a couple of extra special thank yous this year – and unfortunately those are also good byes. Our amazing Treasurer, Sonya Nobes is leaving as her kids time at school has come to an end. And FLOSS, our trust grants application and polytunnel expert is also moving on, as his lovely daughter is changing schools. Thank you both. Thank you for your dedication and commitment to supporting this school, for the hundred and hundreds of hours you have given up, and for playing such important roles (personally and professionally) on this committee. You will be sorely missed. We wish you both the absolute best of luck in the future, and we hope to see you at our events next year.

As well as our committee, there are a few additional people we’d like to mention:

As well as all of these wonderful people, we’d like to give a big thank you to the businesses who have supported us this year. Be that with financial donations, equipment and resources, raffle prizes etc – we couldn’t do it without you.

The Year ahead

There is lots on the agenda for next year – all the normal activiries with a big focus on the swimming pool. With a bit of luck, support and hopefully some large grants, we will look forward to a Grand Opening Ceremony in the summer.

How you can get involved

We’re always on the hunt for more people to join FOLSS - particularly to help run fundraising events and to help with the annual raffle. Whether you want to hold a specific role or dip in and out, you are most welcome.

If you would like to get involved, contact one of the Chairs (Ally or Ellie) or email info@folss.org.uk
