CAS drop-in centre was reopened on 11st August 2021. We meet every Wednesday to learn new skills and to enjoy the delicious meal prepared by our volunteers. We also have Taichi class, language classes, painting class, craft class, singing class and the monthly birthday celebration. At the drop-in centre, our members can also play table tennis, sing karaoke and play games. The singing group also used to practice at the karaoke room of Szechuen Kitchen once a month. Our Chinese radio programme ‘Under The Same Sky’ is broadcast from the house of our broadcasting volunteers or from the Unity101 radio station, every Monday from 6pm to 8pm. We thank Szechuen Kitchen and Shanghai Bay Chinese Restaurant for sponsoring the game prizes of our radio programme.

CAS celebrated Christmas on 15/12/2021. On the day, we have carol singing, games, lucky draws, gift exchanges, artwork competition and most importantly the communications amongst members. The success of the event is attributed to the support of the members, the cooperation of the Committee and the selfless dedication of the volunteers.

On 30/1/2022, CAS celebrated the Chinese Tiger Year at Westquay. CAS once again brought the traditional Chinese New Year celebration to Southampton. This is a community-sponsored free event that aims to share with the public the colourful and rich Chinese culture, through performances and workshops. Over 20 volunteers helped to run and manage the whole event. A long list of 26 performances were presented by about 100 performers from 11am to 3pm on Sunday 30/1/2022. According to Westquay, they have over 45’000 visitors on that Sunday. We estimate that at least 10’000 visitors have watched the performances on stage and participated in the workshops at the open floor.

One of CAS objectives is to improve the quality of life for Chinese people living in and around the city of Southampton; without distinction of sex, political or religious opinions. CAS responded to the British government to help Hong Kong immigrants who have just arrived around Southampton. The ‘Hong Kong British National (Overseas) Welcome Programme’ of CAS was launched on Saturday 26/2/2022.

A lecturer of Southampton University, Dr Peng Wang, was subjected to a racist attack by a gang of men while out jogging in Southampton on 23/2/2021. Through the efforts of CAS with police and many other organizations, the case has finally been resolved. Two men were found guilty.

There are still lots of activities carried out by CAS, which are not reported here but can be found at our website, Facebook, WeChat and WhatsApp group. We will continue to maintain good relationships with external organizations, local cultural and community groups as well as other Chinese associations at nearby towns, for hastening mutual understanding as well as for promoting Chinese cultures and arts.
