ARL ha5 seen a change in the lype of business being conlraded. is as 8 direct result of e￿nOMiC
pressures faceol by companies WI￿ seek our endorsemenl seNtes. We have also found Ihal many ol our
orpoiale partners. who support us Ihfough grants and sponsorship, have reduced Ihe amount of funding
available. Many ol these corroanie5 have also changed their funding timeframes and in January 2023 this did
raise a risk ¢)n ¢ashflow for a very $hort pericml. Our main ¢ontin9ency fund5 awe usually held in a 0￿-year fixed
term account so we had funds bul could not access Ihem ￿mediatety. We review the amount held in fixed ler
accounls every year and for 202W24 and Ihis cashflow query will inlom decish)n5 we make for the future year.
Finance and Audll
We faced a huge Challenge in 2022 as the re¢wilment of a F￿ancts Business Manager wilh Ihe Tighl skills 8nd
experience lor Ihe salary we coukl offer took nearty a year. In that per￿1. we ¢Mtracted an exlemal finance
agency, Oculus. who were very supportNe and prowded t￿ assucance of mainta.ning required financial
management for almost len months. This was exlremety c0511y, but unavcidable. *)d meant that a lol offinance
lask$ be¢8m& Ihe retr￿1 of the CEO Operalions Director.
As an addilional challenge. we had planned lo ¢hanye our finan¢e syslem Irom 1￿ April 2022 and Ihe mov¢ from
SAGE to XERO was inleresling. We are pleased lo advTse that 311 challenges werè ¢)veicome. bul the complexty
of mtsving from one system to another c*ne at a time vthen we had appointed new auditors. Kreslon Reeves
were incredibty supportive, and we would l.ke to thank our audrtOf5 for Ihetr paI￿n¢t whilst they undertook a
'deep dive. of the charity and the trading subsidiary duriNJ the audil process. The challenges outlined did dday
the fi'nal audrt being signed off by Trustees and Directors. which ioc* p* In Novembei 2022 when usualty this
lakes place in Seplember 2022. H(Mever. we slill submitted all required dcturr*nlation lo the Charity
Commission and Companies House. and Office ol the Sccllish Charily Regulator. on time. We appointed lo the
Finance Business Managef post in Novembw 2022 and ihe XERO system has been in place for a whole

Re¢ruitment Challeng
The posl-pandemic period has been a challenge as we l￿d styne kng-temi staff made deci6ion6 to felire or
leave. so we had a need to recnjil staff to key posts in 2022. We were succe551ul in covering posts for ¢)ur
fundraising, communications, public aNairs, helpline. project Management. youih and volunteer enga9emenl,
food safely awarenes$ and finaw. Howevef. the timeframes recruitin9 some of these p05t$ were
considerable. This impacted on agency costs for recruilmenl as well as contracting external consultants lo cover
key roles. such as finance. 11 also meant that a bt of addilK)nal tasks fell lo thè CEO and Operalions Director lo
ensuie required a¢tNit*s moved forward. We have also had a Coup￿ of these posts become vacant again and
are ¢urrenlly not recruiting for these posls as we take a risk assessment 8pprtsa¢h to the conlinued uncertainly
ol income during 2023124.

facililaled by an external coaching eyrt with the aim to bring staff tcgelher to share an understanding of each
olherfs areas ofwiyk and expertise, a conneciion wilh Ihe ¢hariVs values and objectives, and for Ihe teams lo
gel to kn¢y•V ea¢h olher more. In J•nu¥y 2023 w¢ he￿ on alkday act¢vity where teams shared their experiences
and expertise with each other. All managers mel off-site on a second day to discuss the oulcome5 of a Belbin
le￿ exercise, and lo devek*p their shared appro¥h to delweryof key obiedives for the year ahead.

These discussions comMer￿ed in earty 2022 and are onty just being finalised, with an offte move by the end of
June 2023. There have been negolialions lo try to cover unforeseen costs but Ihere are many aspeds lo

Ihe charily. We have engaged staff in all aspects oflhe move. induding a Slaff suNey lo ascertain Ihtsughis on

Successlon Planning for a neY• CEO
Our CEO advised the Trustees tjrectors in 2022 that lo l*alth and personal reason$, they were lookir￿
lo slep down after eight years in the role. The CEO provided an exlended notice pencAI wth a leaving dale ol
31$1 July 2023. v4hich has provhled the charity and tradsng sUbS￿lary time lo devebp a succession plan. The
Trustees would like lo thank the CEO for their commilmenl lo the charity, and also thank Ihe Operalions
Director, who is stepping in as interim CEO unlil a new CEO is iecrviled. Recruilmenl commenced in the lirsl
quarter ol this fin8n¢ial year arKI Twstees hope to make an anrthncemenl of Ihe new incoming CEO in the near
lulure.11 is a Ghallenge when any employee leaves. bul the CEO has many responsibilities lo handover bolh
