## **Report of the Trustees for the Year Ended 31 March 2026** 

The Trustees present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 March 2026. The Trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019). 

## **ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE Introduction** 

The Trustees record that although the Charity has seen increased demand and uptake of services over the last year as detailed below, the fundraising landscape is too challenging and, purely because of lack of funding available, the Trustees have made the decision to close Soundwell Music Therapy at the end of July 2026. 

This decision has been made with deep regret. Despite our sustained efforts over many years to secure the funding needed to continue, we have faced a long-term and unsustainable lack of financial support. We are grateful to all funders who have supported Soundwell in the past, but the Trustees have decided that without large, multi-year grants available, they aren't able to offer a high-quality, reliable service for clients. After exploring every viable option, our Board of Trustees has concluded that we can no longer continue to operate our groups and services.

The loss of the UK's only bespoke music therapy mental health charity is a major blow to people with severe, enduring needs in Bristol and Bath. Regretfully, Trustees see no option but closure. We will support clients in finding alternatives and prepare staff for redundancy, while honouring 23 years of vital work." **Catherine Warner, Chair of Trustees.** 

Soundwell acknowledges that the withdrawal of services is difficult for some clients and is working collaboratively with partner organisations and care providers to support individuals during transitions. We are deeply concerned about the extremely limited availability of music therapy provision in the community, more widely. We are also concerned about the scarcity of mental health support in general. 

Key service points during this financial year include: 

- Continuation of face-to-face sessions and one on-line group, attended and used well 

- 106 people attended regular Soundwell sessions; a further 26 attended one outreach session 

- 122 Soundwell sessions were run this year 

- Support for people with a range of mental health needs. We have made provision for people with complex and severe mental illness, for whom music therapy is the only treatment they access for recovery, or where it is an important factor in their overall care. Alongside this, we have offered music therapy intervention as a preventative tool to counter worsening mental illness; for maintenance of mental health. 

- Support for unpaid Carers who access music therapy to relieve isolation, for expression and peersupport. 

- WorkWell Singing for Wellbeing series of 16 sessions, to support people in returning to work or volunteering after a period of mental ill-health. 

- Bath Singing for Wellbeing Group performances at Bath City Farm and Bath Abbey. 

We continued to work on raising the profile of Soundwell this year to support funding requests, and awareness within our communities of the services and support we provide. We attempted to connect with MPs, The Mayor of the West of England, Royalty and various high profile local musicians and artists. Attempts were also made to introduce corporate services and expand into new service areas. 

We are grateful to our friends at the Bedminster Quaker Meeting House, Bristol, the Scout HQ Bath, and The Park Community Centre, Kingswood, who provide stable, calm space for the work to continue. 

We are pleased that despite the sadness of closing; we have been able to manage the ending of the Charity therapeutically, for the benefit of our participants. This has been down to excellent financial monitoring and planning, the support of Trustees and the professionalism of all staff and music therapists involved.

## **ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE 1. SERVICES** 

## **Regular music therapy sessions** 

- Monthly Carers Support Group, face to face in Bath. For unpaid carers who are isolated and might be low in mood. 9 Carers attended regularly. 

- Singing for Wellbeing groups in Bristol and Bath. For people who have mild/moderate mental health issues, held fortnightly. 41 people attended regularly. 

- Open Music group, in Bristol and Bath. Face to face. For people with a range of mental health issues, monthly. 28 people attended regularly. 

- Online Music Listening group.  For people with a range of mental health issues, monthly. 9 people attended regularly. 

- The end of a 20-week Music Psychotherapy group for adults with moderate-high/complex mental health needs in Bath. 6 people attended regularly. 

- 16-week WorkWell Singing for Wellbeing group for people considering returning to work or volunteering following a period of mental ill-health. 13 people attended. 

## **Outreaches** 

- 2 x sessions at ReMind for people with new diagnoses of dementia and their carers (B&NES - 12 participants) 

- 2 x sessions at community hospitals in Hengrove and Thornbury, to support mental wellbeing for people on long-term physical rehabilitation wards (14 participants).

## **Reaching diverse groups** 

Soundwell is committed to reaching marginalised communities and removing barriers to music therapy. This includes individuals who might slip through the net, who have experienced prejudice and discrimination, and lack of specialist support. Networking and refreshing connections has included working with the above organisations, plus liaising with and taking referrals from community mental health and social prescribing teams, Bristol Autistic Spectrum Service (BASS), Housing Support Agencies, Women's Specialist Services, Drug and Alcohol Specialist Services, Bath and Bristol Mind and Rethink

I loved singing with the group and I felt welcome and comfortable. Kim and Harry are great teachers which really helped my confidence plus it was a good bunch of people. I only wish there could have been more sessions at the park centre as it's so close to my home. I always found I was really elated after singing and I felt quite emotional sometimes. ## **FINANCIAL REVIEW** 

## **3. Finance** 

Income for the period amounted to £97,399 (2025: £186,679). Expenditure amounted to £196,197 (2025: £164,334). 

Included within expenditure above is £66,556 of closure provisions. These are provisions for expenditure we are expecting to incur between 1 April 2026 and 31 July 2026 in order for the charity to wind up in an orderly manner. 

The fixed assets have also been fully depreciated in these accounts due to the cessation plans. This incurred additional depreciation costs of £4,916. 

The net result was a deficit of £98,798 for the period (2025: £22,345 surplus); when added to balances brought forward, the Trust had net funds at the year-end of £16,763 unrestricted funds (2025: £99,354) and £Nil restricted funds (2025: £16,207). 

The results for the financial year ended 31 March 2026, without the cessation costs, would have reported a deficit of £27,327 for the year; when added to balances brought forward, the Trust would have had net funds at the year end of £85,023 unrestricted funds and £3,212 restricted funds. 

Following the Trustees' decision to close the charity, our focus will be to closely monitor the remaining funds to ensure that all financial obligations are met and any expenditure incurred is in-line with the constitution and core objectives of Soundwell Music Therapy. 

Any surplus unrestricted funds held at the end of July will be donated to charities whose objectives are in line with Soundwell's. 

We will donate our instruments to the following charities: 

- Bristol Aphasia Choir 

- Dovetail Orchestra 

- Music Space 

- Off The Record 

- West England Music Alliance (WEMA) 

- Trinity Arts Centre 

- Bristol Beacon 

- MindSong 

- St Peter’s Hospice 

Throughout the year, the Senior Staff Team produced regular financial reports and detailed cashflow projections for the Treasurer, Trustees and Senior Staff Team to enable them to monitor the financial position, and will continue to do so until the charity is closed.

## **STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT** 

## **Governing document** 

Soundwell Music Therapy Trust is constituted under a trust deed dated 15 July 2002 and is a registered charity. The principal objectives, as amended in 2025 are to: 

1. TO PRESERVE AND PROTECT MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLBEING FOR PEOPLE LIVING IN THE SOUTH WEST OF ENGLAND, THROUGH THE PRACTICE OF MUSIC THERAPY, AND OTHER MUSICAL ACTIVITIES THAT PROMOTE WELLBEING. 

2. TO ADVANCE THE EDUCATION OF THE PUBLIC, AND IN PARTICULAR SERVICE PROVIDERS AND THE MUSIC THERAPY PROFESSION INTO THE BENEFITS OF MUSIC THERAPY AND OTHER MUSICAL ACTIVITIES THAT PROMOTE WELLBEING, FOR PEOPLE EXPERIENCING EMOTIONAL OR MENTAL DISTRESS. 

The charity is governed by a board of Trustees who are detailed on page 6. The Board makes decisions on the annual budget, formulates policy and considers strategic issues which affect the organisation. The Director/s and management team are responsible for the day to day running and management of the charity. A Scheme of Delegation was approved in January 2017, setting out the roles and responsibilities of Trustees and those matters delegated to the Director/s. 

The charity's closure process has been thought through, planned, diligent, sensitive to the needs of the clients and financially responsible. Clinical and finance data are being kept in accordance with charity law and within professional guideline recommendations. Please see the Soundwell website for more information on this. 

The Soundwell website will remain visible for 10 years from 31 July, so that resources can be viewed, for example our Legacy Impact Report. 

## **Appointment of Trustees** 

The Board of Trustees appoints new Trustees as follows: potential Trustees are identified with attention paid to relevant skills and experience. Trustee skills audits are regularly completed to inform the recruitment process. They are shown copies of the constitution, annual report and literature relating to responsibilities of charitable Trustees. Once identified, potential Trustees are invited to attend Trustees meetings for 6 months, as an observer prior to a mutual decision being made as to their suitability. 

We are pleased to announce that Simon Hall joined the Board of Trustees in July 2025.  He brings with him extensive knowledge and experience of music therapy, safeguarding and working with children and young people. 

The last Trustee Meeting for Soundwell was held on 15 July 2026. 

## **Public Benefit** 

We have referred to the guidance contained in the Charity Commission's general guidance on public benefit when reviewing our aims and objectives, in planning our activities and on the point of closing the charity down. 

## **Risk management** 

The Board of Trustees regularly reviewed and identified the key risks to the Charity and its operations.  The Board continue to consider two of the most significant risks to be financial sustainability and safeguarding. In relation to finance, the Board reviewed the financial position and performance of the Charity at each meeting, and actively considered the long-term cash position. This enabled the Board to identify any potential financial uncertainties well in advance and put in place any measures should they be required, such as closure. 

The Board placed great emphasis and importance in relation to safeguarding. All staff and Trustees have up to date safeguarding training at level 2, 3 or 4 as appropriate for the role. We have also been mindful that there are different safeguarding issues when providing remote services than face to face. The Trustee safeguarding lead continues to help monitor both policy and practice in this area.

## **STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT Reserves policy and future plans** 

The Reserves Policy was reviewed annually as part of Soundwell's financial planning and is usually based on an average of 3 months of the previous year's expenditure.  However, in light of Soundwell's closure, we have calculated the reserves figure for our year end to 31 March 2026 as follows: 

- The anticipated expenditure to be incurred between 1 April 2026 and 31 July 2026 

- • Plus additional closure costs of staff redundancy 

As a result, we have deemed a reserve figures of £66,556 to be appropriate. 

The current level of reserves stands at £16,763, all of which are free reserves. This is after providing for the cessation costs of £66,556.

I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of Soundwell Music Therapy Trust (the Trust) for the year ended 31 March 2026. 

## **Responsibilities and basis of report** 

As the charity trustees of the Trust you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 ('the Act'). 

I report in respect of my examination of the Trust's accounts carried out under Section 145 of the Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under Section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

## **1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES** 

## **Basis of preparing the financial statements** 

The financial statements of the charity, which is a public benefit entity under FRS 102, have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) 'Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019)', Financial Reporting Standard 102 'The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland' and the Charities Act 2011. The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention. 

## **Going Concern** 

Following the Board of Trustees decision to wind the charity up in July 2026, these accounts have not been prepared on the going concern basis. 

## **Expenditure** 

Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to that expenditure, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably. Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all cost related to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources. 

## **Tangible fixed assets** 

Depreciation is provided at the following annual rates in order to write off each asset over its estimated useful life. 

Plant and machinery -  20% reducing balance basis 

## **Taxation** 

The charity is exempt from tax on its charitable activities. 

## **Fund accounting** 

Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees. 

Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes. 

Further explanation of the nature and purpose of each fund is included in the notes to the financial statements. 

## **Hire purchase and leasing commitments** 

Rentals paid under operating leases are charged to the Statement of Financial Activities on a straight line basis over the period of the lease. 

## **Pension costs and other post-retirement benefits** 

The charity operates a defined contribution pension scheme.  Contributions payable to the charity's pension scheme are charged to the Statement of Financial Activities in the period to which they relate. 

## **Incoming resources** 

Voluntary income including donations and grants that provide core funding or are of a general nature are recognised when there is entitlement, certainty of receipt and the amount can be measured with sufficient reliability. 

Investment income is recognised on a receivable basis.

## General Fund £16,763 

The net operating result of unrestricted income and expenditure. This includes a provision for closing expenditure expected to be incurred between 1 April and 31 July 2026. 

## Morrisons Foundation £Nil 

This grant was awarded in 2023 to purchase 2 new electric pianos, other small instrument stocks and a storage cupboard. It has been agreed with the Foundation that these surplus funds can be donated to a charity whose objectives are in line with Soundwell’s at the end of July 2026. 

## Garfield Weston £Nil 

Funds of £30,000, to be used over two years for operating costs, were granted in May 2024. All funds have been fully utilised. 

## Denman Charitable Trust £Nil 

This grant was awarded in support of our core services and was fully utilised in the year.

## Global Make Some Noise £Nil 

This grant was awarded to support our operating costs between 1 July 2025 and July 2026. The remaining balance of the grant will be spent before the end of July. 

## People's Health Trust £Nil 

This grant was awarded to support the cost of our open and singing groups in Bristol. The funded period was September 2023 to August 2025. All funds have been utilised. 

## Schreier Foundation £Nil 

This grant was awarded to support our Bath and Bristol open groups and our online group. All funds were fully utilised in the year. 

## Simon Rivett Carnac £Nil 

This grant was awarded to support our Bath singing group. All funds were utilised during the year. 

## Anton Jurgens £Nil 

This grant was awarded to support our 20 week group. The grant was fully utilised by May 2025. 

## St Austell Brewery £Nil 

This grant was awarded to support our 20 week group. The grant was fully utilised by May 2025. 

## Quartet Community Foundation Resilience Fund £Nil 

This grant was awarded to support the board development, ex-client consultation group and referral processing system. This grant was fully utilised by the end of March 2025. 

NHS Bristol, N.Somerset, S.Glos ICB - Workwell Singing Group £Nil 

This grant was awarded to support a 16 week singing group in Bristol. All funds were fully utilised by the end of March 2025. 

## Postlewaite Music Foundation £Nil 

This grant was awarded to support our Bath carer’s group. All funds have been fully utilised. 

## Bristol Airport £Nil 

This grant was awarded to support our Bristol open and singing groups. All funds will be utilised by the end of June when our groups end. 

## Bath Boules £Nil 

The grant was awarded in January 2026 to support our Bath open group. All funds will be utilised by the end of June when our groups end.

## **15. POST BALANCE SHEET EVENTS** 

The Board of Trustees have taken the decision to cease activities on 31 July 2026. 

With this in mind there have been provisions made for the costs expected to be incurred from 1 April to 31 July 2026, estimated to be £66,556. 

Fixed assets have been fully depreciated in these accounts, incurring additional depreciation costs of £4,916.
