effective operations. the Chlef Executive has delegated authority, within terms of delegation approved by the
trustees, for operational matters induding finance and employmenL The trustees employ an extemal
financial controller to manage the financ88 of the busines$.
The charty also has an infompl $tsaring group Com￿SIng parents. partners and other interested partS88. This
commlttee meets quarterly and the primary purpose is to provide a local sounding board to take into account
tho vlews of the community.
The charity has a relationship wth Southside, We¥tside. Lewsham and Milton Keynes Young Leaders,
Academi88 which are regi8tered companSe8 and charitles in their own right. EYLA Seeks to work In
partner8hip wlth charitles. providlng advice and 8UPPOrt to them and other group8 who wi8h to set up new
YLAS.

children who are in need or sttially excluded. so as to enable them to develop the Capacity and skills which will
enhance their INes and enable them to participate more fully in society.
EYLA has the general aim ol empowering BAME boys and girfs to t*com the next generat￿n of 8u¢¢essful
leaders through four major areas of activity.. leadership training. opportunities, education and $upp)rL
The main objective8 for the year continue to be improving educational attainment through academlc
support., providing opportunities to develop leadership Skills. raise aspirations and broaden horizons in
partner8hip with the business communtty; montoring support for the young leadgrs and support for their
famllles.
The slrategles employed to a¢hleve the charity's objectives are to..
Recrult young people who will most benefft from the programme by tsking referrals from gchool$, faith
groups. th8 police, parents, social services and similar youth focused groups, organisationg and agencies.
- Provide 8 tutorial programme managed by qualffied teachers to help young people achieve more at school.
Provide Saturday and holiday programme8 to enablo young people to develop their interpersonal,
communication and leadership ski118 through a range of acts'vrties. visits and residentials.
Provide mentoring from a pool of high quality, committed professionals and leaders who Can motfvate and
inspire in a safe and positive environment.
- Arrange community service to en¢oura9e young Peop￿ to become invoTrrfed, to empathise and to care.
- Provide family support to engage and maintsin parental support for chiklren and maximise their participation
in the work of EYLA.

Attondance
EYLA continued to provide leadership trainirvJ on Saturdays during term timè which over the last year took
place across two venues, the Juniors at our own centre in Forest Gat8 and the Sèniors at City of London
School with increasing online delivery to expand our reach. The holiday and ha￿-terM leadershlp
programme was based at Eastside. Weekty attendan¢e averaged 310 parti¢ipants. 500 in-5chool
participants, 191 alumni and 105 scholars in boarding schools.
Educatlon
We provided supplemntsry booster dasses In Maths and English. study skllls and academic ¢oachlng as
well as 11+ and cognitive abilty tutoring (verbal ar)d non-vert)al reasoning) to prepare children for grammar
or independent school entrance exams.
We have partn6red with boarding schools to provlde enTlchment activity days, summer school r8sid8ntlals,
talks and tours as vlell as online and In person masterclasses. Notsbty we have worked closely with Eton,
Dulwich, Lancing Colleges, Rugby. Stowe and Tonbridge School8.
94% of 22 students gained 9+ GCSES Grade 94; 100% 9alned 8+. Compar8 National Average - 67.8Yo
gaining S+ grade 94.; an overall increasé of 33.3% on students from a similar background who have not
received the benefft of EYLA interrfents'ons.
100% of 20 students galned 3+ A18vel8 or equnial8rt 35% gained A"A. Compare London average - 30%

Parent Unlv•rnlty
Throughout the past year parènts attended a rdng8 of sessions to develop 8nd share their skills.
The Steering Group of The Diamond Club which parents established last year has taken responsibllity for
organising several events including a Christmas Party and a Mental Health Awareness course.
Alumnl
This last year has se8n greater 8lumnl Involvement thmugh mentorlng, sharing career experiences and
insights, general volunteering and engagement with the board of trustees.
Out of 156 actNe alumni 50% are in work having atterKled universty,. 7% accessed work vla the
apprenticeship route. 39% are curr6ntly at unNersity', 2% are on degree apprenticeships,.
2Yo are currently on a gap year (202&2024) before university: all alumni are in educats'on employment or
training (i.e. Zero NEETS).

WORK BEING CARRIED FORWARD THROUGH 20242025
EYLA will continue to expand its communty and corporate partners, network towards a pipeline Into the
workforce for Black youth.
We will continue to expand our reach numericaty and geographicalty through improving our use of
tschnology, virtual delivery and social media.
Th8 Board of Tru8te8s will contlnue the proc￿ of succession planning towards recTUiting a new CEO.
Successlon Plannlng
The EastsFde communty was devastated by the sad and sudden loss of our founder and CEO, Ray Lewls.
Ray leaves an enomious legacy through his famity. the programmes he established with the alm of
addressing racial inequalty in our society. arKI the Young Leaders who he empowered and who are now
tssked with taking his vision fonvard.
We are committed to ensuring that EYLA goes from strength to strength as we continue to work tirelessly
towards our mission. Ray was due to 'semi-retire' so trustees had tegun the process of succ85si0n
planning and as such are launching a search for a new CEO. In the intèrim Anne Collard and Carol
Murraine will continue to wn the day-to4ay op8rations of the charity.
Trlbutè to tho latè Ray Lowl• CBE- 1963-2024
Ray Lewls lounded EYLA In 2002. A forn￿r prison seNF¢e manager of a young offenders. Institute, Léwi8
recognlsed the dlsproportlonate number of Black boy8 outsld8 education and incarcerated. He went on to
design a leadershlp tralnlng curriculum to help them stay In School and flouri8h in the workplace. Lewls
once said.. 'For too long, Black peop￿ have had to wait to recèrrfe crumbs from the Mastsr'8 tab￿. I want to
support a generation to believe they can sit at that table.. Part of Lewls's plan to achieve equality involved
88curlng prlvate school scholarshlps for hls Black Saturday school students INing In Newham, aast London,
and over 270 went on to attend the Ilk88 of Eton. Rugby and Stowe. Many hav8 since s8cured w811-paid
Jobs in a range of professions including govemment and law. More recently, three former Rugby School
pupi18 and one who attended Vdellington College retumed to EYLA to sit on its board. One is now chair of
trustees. Lewis's bold approach to levelling up attracted the attention of senlor politicians and In 2008 the
then Mayor of London Borl8 Johnson asked him to 8erve as a senior advisor on mentorlng and youth crime.
Mor8 recentty Lewis's work was Immortalised In the BBC3 Series 8o8rder8 -
comedy confronting
prlvilege and tokenism through the eyes of five Black students who are s8nt to an 8llte private school. The
writer Daniel Lawrence Taylor revealed he based the drama on Lewls's work at EYLA after reading about in
national newspaper. Lewis was bom in Guyana and emigrated to London aged one with his family. He
met his wffe Pam, in London, and they raised a family comprising three daughters and more recently two
grandchlldren. Lewls's daughter Chloe said. Ray, our dad, was a force of nature. This was as true of him
as a father and husband, as much as It was in hls profe￿onal lile. He instllled In us all the importance of
Ilving a genuinety purpose drNen Irfe, and hls work ethic was matched only by his sense of humour. He
leaves behind a huge legacy, and a holè in our lives and th08e of hundreds of other8."
EYLA has become a model of excellence and continues to transfom) the lives of boys and girls growing up
In adversity. Lewis extended its reach across London and further afield to Milton Keynes, Leicester and
Nottingham. EYLA'S c￿lOUnder Anne Collard and head of programmes Carol Murrain8 said.. °Ray was not
just the founder of EYLA" he was a friend and father figure to many and will be deeply missed. His legacy
and light will live on through his famity and the young leaders who h8 inspired and challenged to be the
best that they can be. We will now look to them to lead us fo￿ard..

Ric Lewis, Executive Chaimian and C￿chief Investment Officer of Trlstan Capttal Partners and founder of
The Black Heart Foundation, be￿rne a patron of EYLA in 2007. H8 said. Almost from the first days I
arrived to live in England 25 years ago, Ray Lewis joined me, partnered me and taught m6 how to18ad
with grace. import and impact as we jointy sought to maké a drfference in the inspiration and aspiration of
the disenfranchised young people throughout our county. I regard him as a mentor and a brother. The
Black Heart Foundation wouldn't serve as it does tixjay without Ray's guidance. input and governance.
There are few words that can properfy quantify the enornty of Rays impact on 80 Very many of us and the
Immensity of the loss to our ¢ommunty as we chart our pathway forward without him.. Patrick Derham, a
former headmaster of Rugby and Westminster School, addgJ'. °Me8ting Ray changed my life. He was a
visionary who helped so many young people believe in themselves and to be agents of change in their
communilies and beyond. His legacy wll live on..

Flnanclal revlew
For the year ended 31 March 2024, EYLA had a total income of £338,072 (2023.. £481,382) and total
expènditure of £403,862 (2023.. £470,320), re$utting in a net deficit in funds for the year of (£65,790) (2023".
£11,062) due mainly to lower income received in 2024.
The restricted fund balance at 31 March 2024 was £219.878 (2023: £227.168). The unr8Stricted fvnd
balance at 31 March 2024 was £61,543 (2023.. £120,044).
The carrled forward fund balance at 31 March 2024 amounted to £281,422 (2023.. £347,212).
Overviews of EYLA finances. includlng detsiled management reports, were provided to the dlrectors and
trustees throughout the y8ar to give them better insKJht and understanding of the finances of the chaflty,
whlch enabled them to make relevant decisions and to monitor the financial positlon of the charty.
Raserves Poll¢y
The trustees have examined the charW$ requlr8m8nts in the Ilght of the maln risks to the organlsation. It
has established a policy whereby unrestricted furKls not committed or Invested in tangible fixed assels held
by th8 charity should cover 3 mnths operating costs including staff salaries. Current reserves are
acceptable and we contlnue to put Cost saving measures in place towards maintalning adequate re88Ne8.

Basls of accounting
These financial statements have b88n prepared in accordance wtth FRS 102 Yh8 Financial R8POrting
Standard applicabl8 in the UK and Republic of Ireland. ("FRS 1027, 'Accounting and Reporting by
Charities. th8 Statèment of Recommended Practice for charities apptying FRS 102, the Companies Act
2006 and UK Generalty Accepted Accounting Practice as it applies from 1 January 2015. The charity is a
Public Benefft Entity as defined by FRS 102.
The financial statements are prepared in sterfing, which Is th8 fijnctional currency of thé company.
Monetary amounts in these financial ststements are rounded to the nearest £.
Th8 financial State￿nts have been prepared on th8 historical cost convention. Th8 principal a¢¢ounting
policies adopted are get out below.
Ca•h flow 8tatomont
The financial statements do not indude a cash flow ststement bacause thè charty, as a small r8portlng
entty, 18 exempt from the requirement to prepare such a 8tatem8nt under FRS 102.
Income
Income is recognised in the periixl in whlch the ¢harlty Ss entlded to recelpt and the amount can be
measurèd with r8asonable certainty. Incom is deferred onty when the ¢harity has to fu￿1 conditions before
becoming entitled to it or where the donor or fund8r has specffied that the in¢ome18 to be expended In a
future accounting period.
Income repr888nts donations, grants. fees for 8er4ices rerKlered and interest recelvable. Grants 8ubJect to
8pecific ¢ondStion8 are cradlted to relevant restrlcied fund8.
Expondlture
Expenditure is included in the 8tat8ment of finandal acllvltles when incurred and includ8s attrlbutable VAT
which cannot be recovered.
Expendlture compris8S the follovAng-
a. Charitable expenditurè comprises expenditure on the chariV8 primary charitable purp08e8.
b. Gov8mance costs comprise th8 costs associated with govemance of the charity incurred in connectlon
with the adminlstration of the chartty and compliance with instrtutional and statutory requirements.
Included within this category are costs associated wth the strategic as opposed to the day-to4ay
management of th8 charivs assets.

Fixed assets, which are ststed at cost. are depreciated at rat88 sufficient to reduce the net book amount of
those assets to their estimated residual value at the end of their expected useful lives. The following rates
are currently used:

Fixtures and fittings- over 5 years on a strawJht4ine basis
Fund a¢countlng
Unrestricted funds represent those monles vthith may be used towards meeting the Charitable obJectNeS of
the charitable company at the discretion of the trustees.
The restricted funds are monies raised for. and their use restrided to, a specific purpose, or grants subject
to donor-imposed conditions.
