## **Cultural Subjects** :

Every Saturday Afternoons and Sunday all day, the Coventry Tamil Welfare Association conduct classes in Bharatanatyam (South Indian classical dance), Carnatic Music, Keyboard, Miruthangam Instrument, Violin and Veena instrument. This project was aimed at pupils who are most at risk of disaffection. It provided them with a range of experiences that improved their self-esteem and helped them to view life in a more positive light. In addition, the project aimed at helping to understand cultural awareness and heritage. It provided several innovative resources that helped them achieve better standards. This initiative was organized at the request of the parents.

The project is a success, and this has been proved by the event we had on the 9th November 2024, where all the children who were involved in this project performed in the presence of the Chief guest was member of parliament for Coventry South Zara Sultana and special guest was former Lord Mayor of Coventry, Councilor Mr. Jaswant Singh Birdi at the Community Resource Centre, Coventry. All these children were presented with a certificate of achievement by the Chief Guest

However, the real success was measured by the performance in the examinations conducted in April 2024.The examinations were conducted by a professional organization based in London – OFAAL (Oriental Fine Arts Academy of London - http://www.ofaal.com). Our youngsters took part in Coventry Cultural events organized by the following various ethnic groups.

On the 21st of December 2024, prior to the Christmas break a celebration was organized and all the children enjoyed the celebration.

On the 18th of January 2025, the celebration of Thai Pongal was organized. Pongal is a harvest festival celebrated by the Tamil community. It is a celebration to thank the Sun, Mother Nature and the various farm animals that help to contribute to a bountiful harvest. Celebrated over four days, Pongal also marks the beginning of the Tamil month called _Thai_ , which is considered an auspicious month. It usually falls on the 14th or 15th of January each year. Pongal is also the name of the dish made and eaten during this festival. It is a mixture of boiled sweet rice. It is derived from the Tamil word _pongu_ , which means “to boil over”.

The children who are learning Karate participated in the competition and received gold, silver and bronze medals which motivated more children to join the Karate lessons.

Six students participated in Tamil Language examination conducted by the OCR GCSE and got very good results. One student achieved the first rank in the world. A certificate of appreciation was issued by the Cambridge Examination board and was awarded to the student.

Independent Examiner’s Report to the Trustees of Coventry Tamil Welfare Association (CTWA)

I report on the accounts of the Coventry Tamil Welfare Association for the period ended 31 March 2025 which is set out on page 4– 5.

Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner

The charity trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year (under section 43(2) of the Charities Act 1993 (the Act), as amended by s.28 of the Charities Act 2006 and that an independent examination is needed.

It is my responsibility to:

- Examine the accounts (under section 43 of the Act, as amended);

- To follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 43(7)(b) of the Act, as amended); and

- To state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

## Basis of independent examiner’s report

My examination was carried out in accordance with General Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the accounts.

## Independent examiner’s statement

In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention ( other than that disclosed below):

1. Which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in, any material respect, the trustees have not met the requirements to ensure that:

   - Proper accounting records are kept ( in accordance with section 41 of the Act);

   - accounts are prepared which agree with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the Act, or

2. to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
