## **`Havering Museum - Review of the Year 2020-2021`** 

```
LookingbackatouryearIamleftwiththethoughtthattoughtimesneverlast,buttoughpeople do.
ThisishowIseeouroutstandingvolunteerswhohaveweatheredthepandemicstormwithusand have
pulledtogethertobringusouttheotherside.Agreatachievementasweallarestartingtoseea degree
of normality.
```

WehaveallseenunprecedentedlifechangingeventsnotjustfortheMuseumbutinour families,
communities,countryandtheworld.Noneofushaslivedthroughapandemicbeforeand faced
unbelievabledifficulties,whichhaskeptpeopleapart.AttheheartofourMuseumhasbeenthe people,
volunteersandourvisitingcommunities.TokeepthemsafeweclosedtheMuseumon23March 2020
anddidn'treopenuntil23July2021,whenweknewitwouldbesafeforeveryoneandwewereCovid 19
secure.
```

Idon'twanttoreflectonthenegativityofthisyear,enforcedclosureandlossofincomeforthe Museum,
butsharethestoryofwhatwehaveachievedagainsttheoddsandtheresilienceofmanyof our
volunteers who steered us through this storm.
```

Inreviewingourbusinesstargetsweacceptthateverythinghadtostopinlockdown,butwedid manage
toembracetechnologyandstreamintosomepeople'shomeswiththeuseofZoom,todeliver monthly
Photographicsessions,whichaccountedforour277virtualvisitorsandwehadvirtualBoard meetings.
Financiallyourincomewas(£26,030)whichismadeupmainlyofgovernmentgrants,VAT repayments,
sponsorshipmoneyfrom2019etc.Whilstclosedwestillincurredcostswhichamounted(£14,188). A
smallcoreteamofvolunteershavekeptintouchwithourvolunteersandsomeofour communities,
maintainedthebuildingandourinfrastructure,soughtoutgrantsandobtainedthreegrants (£23,039)
andcarriedoutworkbehindthescenes,onvariousprojects.Oneoftheseprojectsistobring the
wonderfulbronzeageartefacts,knownasHaveringHoardno.4totheMuseuminFebruary2022. The
Hoard will be with the Museum for three years.
```

Someprogresshasbeenmadeagainstourbusinessplansintheformofstartingour digitisation
programme,refreshingthegalleriesandexploringnewkiosksinadditiontolookingatre-energising the
schools programme and building a more robust positive working relationship with them.
```

```
SignificantplanningtookplaceinthelatterpartoftheyeartoensuretheMuseumbecameCovid secure
andtoorganiseeventswhichcouldbesafelydeliveredinaphasedreopening.Ourapproachwasto have
heritagewalks,thenrefreshingandopeningthegalleriestopilotingregulareventsandexhibitions.All of
these have been successfully implemented.
```

Partnerhips-Whilstthiswasadormantyearseveralofoursponsorshippartnersagreedto recommence
their sponsorship in 2021/22 and our involvement with DiscoverMe and Valence House continues.

Thecomingyearwillbeayearofadaptability.Aswestarttocomeoutofthepandemicwehave to
weatherthewinterseasonandremainflexibleandkeepthesafetyofourvolunteersandcommunities at
the fore front of our agenda.
```

Itisessentialthatwerebuildourcommunitiesandembracenewmediumsofcommunications with
audiences,aslearntinthepandemic.Wewillstrengthenourworkwithourpartners,schools,digitise our
Collections,refreshfurtherourgalleries,welcomingtheHaveringHoardandhopefullyrecruiting new
volunteers.  It is also planned to refresh the exterior of the Museum.
```

During2020welosttheopportunityofcelebratingour10thanniversarybutwewillmarkthisoccasion in
2022 with some form of celebration, as we have come so far.

Thesehavebeenextremelyhardtimesandwewillstillhavesignificantchallengescomingourway but
positivityandexcellentteamworkbyourbandofcommittedvolunteersandsupportingcommunities will
ensure we remain a 'Community Hub' for all.

(2020:deficitof£7,303)resultedafterdeductingcharitableexpenditureandgovernancecosts. The
MuseumhasbeenfundedtoalargeextentbymoniesfromtheLondonBoroughofhaveringand efforts
are being made to supplement these monies to enable the museum to continue.

that systems are in place to mitigate exposure to these risks.

Itisthepolicyofthecharitythatunrestrictedfundswhichhavenotbeendesignatedforaspecific use
shouldbemaintainedatalevelequivalenttobetweenthreeandsixmonth'sexpenditure.TheBoard of
Directorsconsiderthatreservesatthislevelwillensurethat,intheeventofasignificantdropin funding,
theywillbeabletocontinuethecharity'scurrentactivitieswhileconsiderationisgiventowaysin which
additional funds may be raised. This level of reserves has been maintained.
