Group Scout Leaders Review

2023-24 year has been an extremely busy one for the group with the number of young people remaining steady, our Cub and Scout sections are running at capacity with our linked explorer unit numbers growing and predicted to continue to grow as well.

The group has maintained a waiting list with over 35 young people on, which at this stage we are unable to offer spaces to as the Cub and Scout sections are operating on a one in one out policy. We are restricted in numbers due to many factors including hall size, number of volunteers and especially with the Scout section the number of people we can practically and safely take on the water.

The group has continued to run an extensive and varied programme including a well-attended group camp. This wouldn’t be possible without the leaders who run the sections giving up their time. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the leaders who have provide such a great experience for our young people.

One of my main focuses this year has been the negotiations for the lease on the Scout hut and Scout Beach to secure the future of the group in Old Portsmouth. We are still finalizing the lease but have broadly agreed the terms. This is a big step forward and will make sure the 1[st] Portsmouth Sea Scouts have a presence in Old Portsmouth for many years to come.

By no means is this project nearly over. There is a still a vast amount of work to be done to bring this to fruition, including planning, fundraising and execution of a full renovation of the Scout Hut. I would like to thank the Project team who have been meeting every month to get this project to the stage it is currently, it’s no mean feat.

I would also like to point everyone to our online presence which has been steadily increasing over the past few years thank you to Claire Seek who works magic with the photos and information the leaders send her and is able to create a steady stream of social media content.

I would like to finish by thanking all those adults who support the group either in background roles such as sitting on the Group’s Trustee Board, helping with working parties and managing communications, or our very important section volunteers, just to name a few. Without the team of people, the group would not be able to function.

On that note if you would like to be part of this team please do get in touch, we have a variety of different roles available to suit anyone it doesn’t have to be a front-line weekly role, it can be flexible around your skill set and the time you are able to offer.

Treasurer’s Report 2023/24

I can report that the finances of 1[st] Portsmouth Sea Scouts group are in good order despite the accounts for the year to April 2024 showing a deficit of £3179.

Our accounts are based on payments and receipts from and to our bank accounts so there is often a mismatch of income and expenditure, for example advance payments for camps which appear in the year ahead of the spending. In general, these are not generally significant, however, in anticipation of the final signature of the leases for the Hut and the Beach, we have incurred expenditure of £3509. This relates to solicitors’ fees for drafting the documentation of the new lease agreements and surrendering the existing ones. Despite this payment, we have maintained the fund for the planned project (with the help of interest earned) at a little over £62,000.

Subscription income has increased from £11,200 to £14,068. This has also allowed us to claim a further £3,837 in Gift Aid and we are very grateful to all those who have completed their declarations to support this. This is further evidence of the health of the group’s finances.

Grants, however, have reduced from £5,205 to £575. This reflects our relatively young fleet of boats, rather than buying boats our most significant equipment purchase has been £4,261 on camping equipment which was at a significant discount due to a pre-insolvency sale and at short notice.

Both grants and fundraising will be key areas for the next few years as we focus on funding of the redevelopment project.

We are also in the process of moving to a new accounting software system which will enable us to improve the flow of information and provide the opportunity to better track the project and produce better reports.
