Treasurer’s Report

Treasurer’s Report 2020/21

Last year I reported that the finances of the 1st Portsmouth Sea Scout group were in a healthy condition, but that, due to the pandemic, there was uncertainty as to how the accounts would look in the year to April 2021. Somewhat unexpectedly, I now have to reported the largest surplus in the history of the group at £28,585. In this extraordinary year, we have been fortunate to qualify for a series of grants and rate rebates from Portsmouth City Council relating to lockdown relief totalling over £20,000. This, combined with further generous grants of £10,000 from the Wyllie Trust and £4,700 from Trinity House has allowed us to purchase three single-handed Fusion dinghies for £9500 and still build up bank balances totalling £46,480 (compared with £17,884 at April 2020). In order to earn a little more interest from this sum than the 0.01% available from Lloyds Bank, we have opened a 35 day notice account with Redwood Bank which is currently paying us 0.70%. Our Group Scout Leader is investigating how best we use some of this substantial sum to secure the long-term future of the Scout Group in Old Portsmouth.

The year has seen a decrease in income from subscriptions from £7,342 last year to £5,286 which is largely as a result of scouts growing up and leaving the group with little opportunity to attract new recruits. There has, inevitably, been a dearth of sailing and camping activities. However, all the leaders have managed to make the most of less exciting virtual meetings and there are signs that the membership will recover as lockdown eases.

I can therefore confirm that the finances of the Group are in a healthy state with good future prospects.
