Mr Jayantha Silva incumbent President of Hela Sarana welcomed the distinguished guests, representatives of Sri Lankan Professional organisations, charity organisations, members of Hela Sarana and their guests.

Dr. Jayantha Perera General Secretary of Hela Sarana presented the minutes of the 27[th] AGM to the audience. The minutes were proposed as correct by Dr Saman Perera and Seconded by Mr Methsiri Wijeratne.

Dr. Jayantha Perera then presented the Secretary’s report for 2023-2024 AGM Year.

worth of school exercise books and a DSI shoe voucher to 60 selected needy students (grade 6-13) from Ampara schools. The event was held at Uksiripura Vidyalaya Ampara, organised by the Principal Athimale Ananda Thero and Mrs. Udeshika Gunawardena. The total cost for the books and the shoe vouchers were Rs . 345515 (£842).

Hela Sarana Individual Member Projects

Mr Methsiri Wijeratna the treasurer of Hela Sarana presented his financial report for AGM year 2023-2024.He shared with the audience the audited accounts report by the independent examiner of Actar Ellis Brown & Company. Accounts were adopted. Proposed as correct by Mr. Leslie Dep and seconded by Dr. Jeevanee Jayawardena.

The committee resigned enblock.

Mr. Janaka Alahapperuma over saw the election of the proposed new committee which was elected unopposed.

Presentations of the Portfolio projects

  1. Education Grants – Mrs. Irie Perera, Project lead on behalf the Education Grants Committee delivered the statistics and performance update for the AGM year 2023-2024.

This project started in 2024 is coordinated by two teams working together – The UK team Mrs.Irie Perera .Dr. Jeevanee Jayawardena and Dr Kanthi Jayawardena

SL Team Mr. Lakshman Wijesekara,( Administrator), Mr. Chandrasiri Liyanage and Mrs Devaki Gomez

In 2024 a total of 70 students received educational scholarships under the main programme. 24 secondary education and

pre-OL students, 23 AL Students and 23 university students.

Already plans are drawn to provide grants to 50 more students informed Mrs Irie Perera.

She shared with the audience, the positive feedback from students,

teachers, and parents, and special thank you to Hela Sarana from two female students who graduated this year with a 2nd class honours BA in Education & a second class upper in Psychology respectively.

Mrs Irie Perera explained to the audience how the other group of children with additional needs are sponsored with the individual donors. Meth Sevana Special need school update was discussed separately by Dr. Saman Perera Vice President of Hela Sarana.

A special bouquet of flowers was presented to Mrs Mala Polpitiye, the previous project lead of the Education grants Committee during the AGM as an appreciation of her years of dedicated work for the needy.

2.Breakfast Project - Mr. Jayantha Silva presented the update on our daily breakfast programme at the Anuradhapura Hospital Renal unit for patients undergoing dialysis treatment. The programme is entering its 13th year in 2025.Every day without fail a nutritious meal and a bottle of clean water, at a cost of £20/day with has been provided by Hela Sarana over the last 12 years.

The president made a passionate appeal to the audience to come forward not only to support the programme but to promote the immense value & virtues of the programme to many hundreds of most vulnerable patients among friend & relatives.

3.Methsevana Special needs school Project- Dr Saman Perera provided an update on the activities of Methsevana School (Established 2008) @ Kobbawala Sri

Priyadharshanaramaya (Nr Gampola). He went on to explain to the audience 15 persons with learning disabilities are enrolled at the school whose learning, vocational training activities are supported by

2 Full time & 1 part time teacher. The current ongoing costs were £220 (LKR 84,000/month) for the salaries of the teachers and transport (school bus) for the children. He appealed to the audience to support the project with the above costs’ educational material, clothes and food for majority of children who were very poor.

Keynotes Speaker - Professor Samanmali Sumanasena, MBBS, DCH , MSc, MD , FRCPCH (UK)Professor in Paediatric Disabilities, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka delivered the key note speech on Building Dreams for Children with Learning and Development Challenges in Sri Lanka.

She explained to the audience the prevalence of Paediatric disability in Sri Lanka, current service structure and provision, gaps in the service. She spoke about the establishment and development of the National Center of Paediatric disability (AYATI), the dedicated multi-disciplinary staff who manage the services and the need for future collaborations.

Dr. Jayantha Perera who visited the center in 2023 expressed the need for provision of material for developmental assessments and requested the audience to come forward to help.

Mr. Jayantha Silva President of Hela Sarana thanked Prof Samanmali for accepting the Invitation of Hela Sarana to enlighten the audience of this area of health.

This was followed by a Buffet dinner.

The Vision for 2024-2025 was delivered by the President of Hela Sarana Mr. Jayantha Silva who identified the following projects for completion in the year2024-2025.

  1. Fund raising for Purchasing two Dialysis Machines for Anamaduwa hospital.

  2. To Commemorate the impact of the Tsunami Tragedy-75 children of Tsunami Families will receive Books and other Educational aids worth Rs 6000 each.

  3. Sanitation and Hygiene project 2024-2025- providing toilets, washbasins and clean water to 200 Children attend the Sunday school at Dharmawardanaramaya, Galana, Gamploa.

  4. 75 Educational Packs to children attending schools in a rural Village Community in Ampara -At a cost of Rs 450,000 Rupees/= (equivalent to £1200.

  5. Facilitating care of the Elderly

  6. 20[th] year commemoration of the Tsunami Tragedy

  7. @ the High Commission of Sri Lanka with their collaboration

Mr Nevomal Fernando who organised the raffle completed the draw with the help of the EXCO and the audience after the President’s speech.

The evening was further enriched by musical performances from Mr. Ruchi Perera, Mrs Dilhani Jagodage ,Miss Sayuri Serasinghe,

Ms Upeksha Wickramaratne, creating a memorable atmosphere of cultural connection and nostalgia.

The event was closed by Mr Jayantha Silva by thanking all committee members and the project team in Sri Lanka, led by Mr. Lucky Lakhi Wijesekera, Mr Chandrasiri Liyanage, and Mrs. Devaki Gomez, for their dedication and tireless efforts.

He also expressed deep gratitude to the donors whose support has enabled Hela Sarana to make a lasting impact specially during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and Sri Lanka’s subsequent economic crisis.

Mr. Silva highlighted the ongoing commitment of the charity’s supporters, which has made these positive changes possible also reached out to other Sri Lankan Charities here in the UK for a collective & a collaborative approach to address many challenges faced by rural communities and for their greater good and requested the audience to come forward with their initiatives for humanitarian projects to develop a constructive dialogue with Hela Sarana to bring many such project to fruition
