Chairman’s Annual Report 2019-2020
At our last AGM in October 2019 we had plans for the season till the end of our year in June 2020. There was great excitement about performing Carmina Burana in late March and a concert of Mozart’s Solemn Vespers and other short pieces. But the Covid19 pandemic took us all by surprise and profoundly changed everything. Carmina was cancelled at very short notice because of the government national lockdown. We had to find a way to keep the choir going until the pandemic was over. But here we are ten months later and severe restrictions on meeting to sing are still in place and we have made the most of virtual rehearsals on Zoom, a technology few had heard of until it became an essential part of life for many.
During 2020 the Charity Commission agreed to the revision of our charity governing documents which we agreed in October 2018. We are an Unincorporated Association and our constitution is based on the model constitution recommended by the Charity Commission.
Our charitable objects are:
To advance, improve, develop and maintain public education in, and appreciation of, the art
and science of music in all its aspects by any means the trustees see fit, including through the presentation of public concerts and recitals.
It has been impossible to perform in public but we have continued to provide education to the choir in preparation for future performances once they are allowed gain. But we remain committed to the objectives.
Because of prudent financial management we were in a good position to continue functioning as a choir. The Treasurer’s accounts are available, having been reviewed by an Independent Examiner.
The Trustees are:
Peter Johnston – Chairman
Tamsin Cundy – Treasurer
Fiona Crane – Librarian
Angela Brooke – Secretary Barry Bates Elizabeth Crockett
Victoria Burcombe
Trish Forrester
We have continued meeting virtually and over half of the choir has been involved, many on a regular basis. We held a ‘virtual concert’ in December with the soloists and conductors in St Michael’s Church Lancing and the rest of the choir singing to themselves alongside the professionals and accompanist. We have learned a lot about the resilience of the choir and how to use technology effectively.
We have had very generous leniency from the Assembly Hall, The Sinfonia of Arun and soloists who mainly forwent their fees for the cancelled Carmina Concert. Spending since then has been limited so we remain in a good position to survive until the Covid19 Vaccine frees us again.
I want to thank Aedan Kerney Musical Director, and Sam Barton, Assistant Conductor, who have led and encouraged us through the lockdown restrictions and continue to remain positive about taking us to new repertoires. Throughout the pandemic the committee of Trustees has met online to ensure we covered our legal responsibilities as a charity and thanks go to them. Jane Davies resigned from the choir and the committee and we thank her for her tireless efforts in developing the role of concerts and rehearsals manager. The remaining 8 Trustees have continued to act when it is possible to do so and we retain good relations with all the organisations we collaborate with in normal times. They too are all struggling to keep going and we hope they will all come through safely once ‘normality’ returns.
We will continue to meet online until it is deemed safe for us to meet in person and continue to provide opportunities for those who wish to join in the virtual rehearsals.
I thank the Trustees for their work this year and am pleased that we all remain positive about the future as the light at the end of the tunnel seems to be getting brighter.
