## **About the Trust**

The Trust was originally set up in 1994 by individual members of the European Suzuki Association (ESA) in response to appeals from musicians and teachers in Eastern European countries, who wanted to become Suzuki music teachers. In July 2002 the Trustees realised their long-term ambition to obtain registration as a charity, having updated the Trust Deed.

**The Objects** of the Trust are ‘to advance the education of the public, particularly children and young people, about all aspects of the teaching methods, philosophy and practices of Dr Shinichi Suzuki in Europe and elsewhere.’

## **Teacher Training**

The Trust’s main focus is on teacher training to provide highly qualified professional Suzuki teachers. The Trust helps to establish new teacher training programmes in countries where these do not exist at present and continues to support existing development programmes, in Europe, The Middle East and Africa.

Teacher training courses follow the guidelines of the European Suzuki Association Limited (ESA), which was established in 1980 to oversee Suzuki teacher training and which as at 31 December 2021 had 25 national Suzuki association members and one new associate member (Ukraine)

The Trust works closely with the ESA and its teacher trainers and relies on the expertise and generosity of experienced Suzuki teacher trainers from national Suzuki associations across Europe and elsewhere.

## **Teacher Training Projects in 2021**

## **Ukraine**

Ukrainian Suzuki Teaching courses have been the main focus for the Trust in the past two years. Until this year, when the Ukrainian National Suzuki Association was established and became an ESA member, courses had been run by the Polish Suzuki Association (CES). The Trustees are grateful to Bartosz Henrych, chair of CES, and his association for their support, which included additional funding. Thanks to this, UNSA now have 22 registered violin teachers, all trained by Anna Podhajska and a new level 2 & 3 course is underway with exams planned in May 2022.

Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic most teacher training projects went online, but it was pleasing to see that **Anna Podhajska** started to hold and plan some live face to face sessions for her Ukrainian Violin Teacher Training course from autumn 2021.

**Marzena Jasinska** continued her training course for Ukrainian piano teachers online and concluded with assessments, finished and registered by November 2021, also funded by the Trust. There are now 8 piano

2

teachers in Ukraine and a new course is planned for 2022-23.

## **South Africa**

The trust agreed a grant for the first piano teachers in South Africa to attend an online course with Stephen Power. One new teacher has now passed her level 1 exam and is working to interest other teachers in Suzuki Piano. South Africa has a large community of violin and cello teachers and its own violin teacher trainer, Lee Marais who worked with Christophe Bossuat and Karen Kimmett, who trained many teachers with support from the Trust and still support the Suzuki community in both South Africa and Zimbabwe.

## **Website**

The Trust maintains a website, recreated and rebranded in 2019. Reports are published regularly in the ESA Newsletter, and further publicity material will be produced as required.

## **Policies**

Reserves policy: Whilst administration costs are kept to an absolute minimum, the Trust has no guaranteed or regular income. While aiming to improve the overall financial position, the Trustees are therefore aware of the need to ensure 1) that sufficient reserves are available to cover any commitment to current major projects and 2) that the Trust has sufficient reserves to raise further funds and respond to applications for smaller grants for a period of at least a year. Grant-making policy: Policy is decided by the Trustees in accordance with the Trust Deed. Current policy is to give priority to applications from well-structured Suzuki teacher training programmes to be held in the country where teachers are needed, or in neighbouring countries. Teacher Training courses must be directed by ESA teacher trainers. All applications must be accompanied by a budget and supported by an ESA teacher trainer or national Suzuki Association. Investment selection policy: All funds are currently held on high interest accounts with CAF Bank. The Trustees deem that the Trust’s funds at present are insufficient for long-term investment. If the situation changes and further funds are raised, the Trustees will reconsider its policy, while still being bound by the terms of the Trust Deed and current legislation. Accounting policies: We present our accounts in a receipts and payments format according to Charity Commission requirements for Charitable Trusts. Account information is reviewed

regularly by the Trustees and formally approved in Trustees’ meetings.
