The Trustees present their report and financial statements for the year ended 31 March 2021

With a global pandemic, our beloved Holocaust survivors shielding at home, schools closed and the country in lockdown, the year’s challenges were like no other

We are proud of the resilience and innovation shown by the Holocaust Educational Trust since the pandemic hit in March 2020. From the creation of new, home-learning resources for parents and teachers, the advent of film and book clubs, to digital conferences for young people, and teaching survivors in their late 80s and 90s how to use Zoom - Holocaust education has not just continued, but thrived – even in difficult circumstances

This is down to the creativity of our team, the deep passion of the teachers and educators we work with, and the support from our funders, including the government, coming together to ensure that despite the challenges, we continued to deliver our mission

There have been challenges, far greater than we could have foreseen, but those challenges now usher in a new era of innovative digital Holocaust education, reaching more young people in more diverse locations across the UK.

WHO WE ARE

The Holocaust Educational Trust work in schools, universities and in the community to raise awareness and understanding about the Holocaust and its contemporary relevance.

We believe that the Holocaust must have a permanent place in our nation’s collective memory. We do this by:
Educating students from all backgrounds across the UK, ensuring they know the truth of the past
Training and supporting teachers nationwide and ensuring they have the resources they need to teach this challenging history
Telling the stories of the 6 million Jewish men, women and children who were murdered, and giving a voice to the survivors, ensuring that their eyewitness accounts are heard
Inspiring future generations to carry on the legacy of the past; to be advocates for our cause, to stand up against antisemitism and hatred today; and to ensure that the memory of the Holocaust is protected for generations to come
Working with Parliament, the media, and the public to help increase understanding and awareness of the Holocaust
Speaking out whenever the past is denigrated or denied

OBJECTS OF THE TRUST

a) To advance the education of the public in the history of the Holocaust and in particular European history and the history of European Jewry relevant to the Holocaust; and
b) The promotion of religious and racial harmony, equality, diversity and citizenship by advancing education about the Holocaust and its contemporary relevance.

OUR HISTORY

1988 – The Holocaust Educational Trust was founded during the passage of the War Crimes Act.
1991 – The Trust ensured the Holocaust was included in the National Curriculum for history.
Late 1990s – Successfully campaigned to have the assets of Holocaust victims and survivors released and returned to their rightful owners.
2001 – We campaigned for the creation of a day to remember the Holocaust, with the first national Holocaust Memorial Day taking place on 27 January 2001.
2005 – Received funding from the Government to take our flagship Lessons from Auschwitz Project nationwide.
2010 – At our initiative, the Government issued a new award, the British Heroes of the Holocaust Award.
2013 – The then Prime Minister David Cameron, announced the establishment of a Holocaust Commission at the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Appeal Dinner, to explore what more should be done to ensure that Britain remembers and learns about the Holocaust for generations to come. The recommendations of that Commission, including the creation of a new national memorial and accompanying learning centre, were accepted with cross party support in 2015.
2015 – At our initiative the then Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, introduced a special commemorative medal to mark seventy years since the end of the Holocaust, the medals were designed and struck by the Royal Mint in consultation with Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis and the Trust
2015 – To mark the 70th anniversary of the British liberation of Bergen-Belsen, we supported Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh as they visited the site in Germany.
2017 – We supported their Royal Highnesses, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on a visit to the site of former Nazi German concentration camp Stutthof, where over 60,000 victims, including 28,000 Jews perished during the Holocaust.
2018 – Marking thirty years of the Holocaust Educational Trust and the eightieth anniversary of the Kindertransport, we launched Stories from Willesden Lane, a unique educational initiative which bought together over 8,500 students from across London.
2018 – Thanks to Government funding, we delivered a pilot Lessons from Auschwitz Universities Project to tackle antisemitism on campus. Through this four-part educational programme, including a one-day visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau, we reached over 125 university Senior Leaders and Sabbatical Officers from 47 English universities.
2020 – In partnership with UCL Centre for Holocaust Education and with support from the National Holocaust Centre and Museum, we developed the Belsen 75 Project, a commemorative initiative to mark the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Bergen-Belsen that included a programme of visits for over 700 students and teachers to the former concentration camp.
2021 – We launched a new a brand new, interactive, and digital learning experience, Lessons from Auschwitz Online, with support from the Department for Education, the Scottish Government and the Welsh Government.

A YEAR LIKE NO OTHER: OUR RESPONSE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Trust suspended all its overseas Lessons from Auschwitz and Belsen 75 projects and all inperson educational programmes in mid-March 2020. Our immediate priority was the safety of our survivor speakers and the teachers and young people we work with, but it quickly became clear that our long-term challenge was to ensure our mission to educate about the Holocaust and its contemporary relevance continued during these challenging and uncertain times.

We responded quickly to ensure that our existing educational resources were adapted and accessible online. We created new and engaging digital resources for students, teachers and families to use in an array of learning settings. We set up a phonebank to ensure that the Holocaust survivors we work with were supported and, importantly, we supported them to use zoom so that they could continue to share their testimony – and we know that that was a real life-line for many of them. We wrote to teachers across the country to offer support and guidance on how to best teach the Holocaust remotely. We diversified our approach to ensure that meaningful Holocaust education and remembrance continued despite the global context.

But responding to Covid-19 was not our only driving factor in ensuring that 2020-21 was a key year for driving our digital transformation. Holocaust education is at a crossroads. The Holocaust is moving from living history to ‘just’ history and sadly the survivors – the eyewitnesses to the past – are growing older, frailer, and less able to share their testimony. This year has been vital in laying the groundwork to use innovative, technological solutions to ensure that the legacy of the past goes on beyond the lifetime of those who were there.

2020-21 was a year like no other, but it also drove huge transformation of our work which will ensure that we are sustainable and able to deliver long into the future.

PROGRAMMES

Teacher Training

We delivered our first Zoom teacher training session in May 2020 and since then we have delivered more than 100 sessions, reaching more than 2,500 teachers from across the UK and at all stages in their careers.

Our digital programme for teachers has included:

Teacher training workshops, delivered in initial teacher training institutions and in schools and colleges as part of teachers’ Continuing Professional Development.
Online Teacher Study Seminars, offering teachers the opportunity to explore Jewish Communities of French North Africa, Jewish Country Houses and the Mosaic of Victims.
Virtual Teacher Study Visits to Ukraine and Austria, a brand-new way for teachers to experience the sites of the Holocaust and to consider how the spaces where the Holocaust took place can inform our understanding of the past.
Our intensive Exploring the Holocaust: UK Course, a unique course designed for teachers to learn more about the Holocaust and consider how this most challenging subject is taught.

Educational Resources

To support students whilst they were learning from home during lockdown, we produced two new resources – one for Primary age children and a second for Key Stage 3 or S2 students.

Our Family Learning Pack for 10- to 11-year-olds and their families enabled children and families to explore age-appropriate aspects of the Holocaust era together in a home-learning environment.

Our Exploring the Holocaust: Home Learning Pack for Key Stage 3/S2 students was designed for teachers to work through with students, sending them resources and activities to undertake at home through the History, Religious Education, Philosophy, Citizenship and PSHE curricula.

The Trust’s Film and Book Clubs were set up in the immediate aftermath of the transition to home working, providing a platform for participants across all stakeholder groups to explore ways in which the Holocaust is depicted in popular culture. Both are free of charge and open to teachers, students, Ambassadors, survivors, and the public.

Outreach Programme

The Trust’s Outreach Programme is the largest programme of its kind in the country, giving students the unique opportunity to hear the first-hand testimony of a Holocaust survivor and putting a human face to the incomprehensible figures of the Holocaust.

Since April 2020, this programme has been available online, with adapted educational resources to help teachers prepare their students to hear virtual live testimony while at home.

Over the last year, 144 organisations and approximately 22,500 people heard the testimony of a Holocaust survivor.

In June 2020, we partnered with Oak National Academy, the leading online educational delivery organisation in the UK during lockdown, to give over 19,000 students across the country the chance to hear the first-hand testimony of Vera Schaufeld, who came to the UK on the Kindertransport.

Insight from Manfred Goldberg BEM, Holocaust survivor

My name is Manfred Goldberg and I am a Holocaust survivor. I was born in Germany and in 1941 my mother, brother and I were deported to Riga, Latvia. My father managed to find refuge in Britain and was helped to do so by British diplomat Major Frank Foley. I worked as a slave labourer before being sent to Stutthof and its subcamps. After being forced onto a death march, I was liberated at Neustadt, Germany on 3 May 1945. I came to the UK in 1946 and concentrated on learning English. I worked hard to make up for my lost schooling whilst working at the same time. Eventually I graduated with a degree in Electronics.

I began shaping my life to be positive and forward looking. Though I realised that the word ‘Holocaust’ was for the vast majority an abstract noun, I found it impossible to speak about my experiences. However, the Holocaust Educational Trust convinced me of the importance of passing on my testimony to young people. I began speaking to sixth formers in schools under their guidance. The feedback was astounding – a student once said “you have changed my life today”. I have now spoken to thousands of people. This has not stopped in the last year despite the barriers we’ve all had to overcome due to the pandemic - I have spoken to hundreds of people through online sessions arranged by the Trust. I am so pleased to still be sharing my personal story, helping to educate others even in these difficult circumstances.

In May 2017 the Trust asked me to travel to Stutthof concentration camp to meet their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Along with fellow survivor Zigi Shipper BEM, we guided the Duke and Duchess through Stutthof. It was selfevidently a highly emotional experience for the Royal couple and for us an unforgettable one. This January, to mark Holocaust Memorial Day, Zigi and I were privileged to be reunited with the Duchess of Cambridge on Zoom.

Football Remembers the Holocaust

In recent years, we have developed a unique and bespoke programme for young Academy players across the English Premier League. Through Football Remembers the Holocaust (FRTH), young players have the opportunity to learn about and remember the Holocaust, taking part in an in-depth period of study and hearing first-hand from a Holocaust survivor. All clubs are also supported as part of this project with supporting Holocaust Memorial Day in January.

This year, Football Remembers the Holocaust was adapted and delivered remotely to players aged 13-14 from ten Premiership clubs.

Insight from David Baker, Head of Education at Premier League

During a year like no other in our lifetime, the continuation and development of our Football Remembers The Holocaust Education Programme has been a truly humbling and incredible experience for all concerned in it. Our last excursion as a club before the pandemic was with the Trust to visit the Imperial War Museum, London, followed by a visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau in March 2020. Since then, the Trust have been adaptable and incredibly productive in the coordination, delivery and review of Premier League Academies marking the 75[th] anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz Birkenau. This season, we’ve all had to adapt and improvise, but ten professional clubs and their U14 age groups have committed to FRTH, and we are particularly pleased that this has grown and two additional clubs have signed up during the last year.

Footballers Remember has been delivered remotely this year through a series of workshops led and delivered by the Trust. We are passionate about providing a broad, balanced and diverse educational program to support the holistic development of our young footballing community, and this programme supports our commitment to increasing awareness and educating young people around our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Standard. During this season we have engaged in numerous, creative activities, including bringing the 2 Manchester Clubs, United and City, together to host a virtual Holocaust survivor testimony session. The engagement by our clubs, the experiences, feedback and the life influencing events have been wonderfully facilitated by the Trust, and we look forward to working together to complete the 2021-22 season .

Lessons from Auschwitz Online

Our Lessons from Auschwitz (LFA) Project celebrated its 21st anniversary in 2020, with over 40,000 people having taken part in this unique learning experience. Incorporating a one-day visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau, the Project, is open to post-16 students, gives participants from every background the chance to see for themselves the site where 1.1 million people were murdered, simply for being Jewish.

In 2020-21, we ensured that this experience was fully accessible to students across the UK, despite restrictions on physically travelling to the site.

In July 2020, over 200 teachers took part in our virtual Continuing Professional Development courses, hearing from Holocaust survivor Eva Clarke BEM and taking part in a series of online educational workshops focused on the history of Auschwitz-Birkenau and pedagogical approaches to teaching the Holocaust.

In March 2021, we were able to deliver our first pilot Lessons from Auschwitz Online Project for 110 students from 34 schools from across England. This ground-breaking new educational programme allows students to learn about Auschwitz-Birkenau and the Holocaust through a virtual site visit, survivor testimony, artefacts, music and photographs, wherever and however they are learning, without having to travel. This platform has been designed to complement a future return to in-person delivery of the programme.

Early feedback has been overwhelmingly positive with over 100% of respondents saying they now have a better understanding of the Holocaust and would recommend the LFA Online Project to friends and other students at their school or college.

The Lessons from Auschwitz Online Project will continue to be delivered throughout 2021.

I took part in Lessons from Auschwitz Online as I wanted to become more knowledgeable about the events of the Holocaust and better develop my understanding of how prejudice can permeate society. It is so important to hear the testimony of survivors, by educating ourselves and others, we can help to preserve the memories of the people who witnessed the Holocaust and we can continue to share their stories, even when they are no longer with us.

Ambassador Programme

Last year the Trust ran our Belsen 75 project, a unique commemorative initiative in 2020 to mark the 75[th] anniversary of the liberation. Once students complete our Lessons from Auschwitz and Belsen 75 Projects they become our Ambassadors, vested with a powerful responsibility to share what they have learnt and to help to ensure the legacy of the Holocaust for future generations. Since March 2020 all of our engagement with these committed young Ambassadors has taken place remotely.

In summer 2020 over 300 young people from right across the UK joined us for our annual Ambassador Conference, held online for the first time. Young people had a chance to learn about the Holocaust through lectures, workshops and survivor coffee mornings spread out over five weeks.

Every year we invite those young Ambassadors who have shown outstanding commitment to apply to join our three-year Regional Ambassador Programme. This year we launched our Leadership Challenge, enabling Regional Ambassadors to bring to a close their Regional Ambassador Journey by exploring one of three contemporary challenges to Holocaust education: Misconceptions of the Holocaust, Contemporary antisemitism and Holocaust distortion.

Our brand-new course, ‘Understanding Antisemitism in the UK’, gave 70 Ambassadors an opportunity to learn from leaders in the field about the history of antisemitism, and equipped them with the skills to know how to respond to antisemitism wherever they see it today.

Insight from Alice Bebber, Ambassador

Becoming an Ambassador for The Holocaust Educational Trust has allowed me to enter a community in which my questions, thoughts and values are respected and shared. Recently, I was lucky enough to take part in the ‘Understanding Antisemitism in the UK’ course. A diverse range of speakers left no stone unturned and as ambassadors we were left with a well-rounded and in depth understanding of the different aspects of Antisemitism in the UK. In addition, this course allowed us to discuss ideas with other Ambassadors and we were able to learn from one another resulting in the community of Ambassadors becoming a deeply supportive network.

IMPORTANT ANNIVERSARIES

Holocaust Memorial Day 2021

Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) is the UK’s National Day of Remembrance for the victims of the Holocaust and Nazi persecution, and subsequent genocides. HMD is marked each year on 27 January – the anniversary of the liberation of the former Nazi concentration and death camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Having played a crucial role in the establishment and development of Holocaust Memorial Day in the UK, we continue to play a key supporting role. On and around Holocaust Memorial Day, the Trust’s Ambassadors were involved in planning and speaking at a range of online events, including the Welsh National Holocaust Memorial Day event and the Scottish Parliament’s ‘Time for Reflection’ session.

In total, over 225 Ambassadors and Regional Ambassadors marked Holocaust Memorial Day right across the UK. All of the Trust’s events to mark the day in 2021 were delivered remotely.

Over 700 people tuned in to our Holocaust Memorial Day event, with keynote speaker, CEO of International Rescue Committee and former Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, Rt Hon David Miliband, facilitated by BBC Political Editor Laura Kuenssberg.

Annual survivor webcast

Over 20,000 people tuned in to our annual survivor Holocaust Memorial Day webcast, which saw Holocaust survivor Eve Kugler BEM sharing her testimony in conversation with Natasha Kaplinsky OBE, and included a special message from the Chief Rabbi. We created a toolkit for teachers, including the modelling of an educational workshop, to help to ensure that all students were prepared for hearing from a survivor.

HRH The Duchess of Cambridge meeting with Holocaust survivors

The Duchess of Cambridge was virtually reunited with Holocaust survivors Zigi Shipper BEM and Manfred Goldberg BEM who she met whilst visiting Stutthof concentration camp in 2017, along with HET Ambassadors Maxwell Horner and Farah Ali. Following the meeting, Kensington Palace released a short film which has been viewed over 2.5million times.

Prime Minister Rt Hon Boris Johnson MP meeting with Holocaust survivor

Holocaust survivor Renee Salt BEM was reunited for the first time with one of her British liberators Ian Forsyth, as part of an emotional and powerful Zoom call facilitated by the Prime Minister Boris Johnson. A film of their meeting, released by Downing Street, has been viewed over 850,000 times.

Whitehall

Over 2,500 civil servants had the chance to hear the first-hand testimony of Holocaust survivor Steven Frank BEM, while Prime Minister Boris Johnson; the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Michael Gove; Cabinet Secretary, Simon Case. Holocaust Educational Trust Ambassadors also attended and shared their reflections on having participated in the Lessons from Auschwitz Project.

We were proud to also deliver smaller events for the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government and the Department for Health and Social Care, both of which heard from a Holocaust survivor and Government Ministers, Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, Rt Hon Robert Jenrick MP, and Department for Health and Social Care, Minister for Covid-19 Vaccine Deployment Rt Hon Nadhim Zahawi MP.

Parliament

76 MPs from across the political spectrum took part in the annual Holocaust Memorial Day debate.

City Hall

We worked alongside City Hall to ensure that the Mayor or London, Sadiq Khan, marked Holocaust Memorial Day. A Virtual ceremony was held on the 25th of January which had over 5,000 views. The event included addresses from the Mayor, the Chair of the Assembly, Holocaust Survivor Renee Salt and Rabbi Marcus MBE and can be viewed here.

Educational Resources

To mark Holocaust Memorial Day we produced a set of resources focusing on the theme of HMD – Be the Light in the Darkness - including resources created for tutor time exploring Mendel Grossman, who secretly photographed life in the Lodz ghetto and the Albanian Muslims who sheltered Jewish refugees.

Social Media: TikTok partnership

Together with the Antisemitism Policy Trust and the Community Security Trust, HET partnered with TikTok to create a campaign on the platform raising awareness of antisemitism and the Holocaust, using Holocaust Memorial Day as a route into engaging a new audience. TikTok is a fast-growing video based social media platform with 3.7 active million users in the UK alone. We produced eight unique videos on pre-war Jewish life and the Holocaust including short excerpts of survivor testimony as well as supporting TikTok to create a video seen by all users on the day of HMD; these videos were viewed millions of times

75[th] Anniversary of the Liberation of Bergen-Belsen

On 15 April we marked the 75[th] anniversary of the liberation of Bergen-Belsen concentration camp by British troops.

On the day of the anniversary, we invited the public to share memories from family members who have a connection to Belsen, receiving an array of incredible stories and memories. Hundreds of our Ambassadors took to social media to share why they remember the Holocaust. Despite this anniversary coming soon after the national Covid-19 lockdown, we were pleased to see it being covered across broadcast and press, including in a short film released on the anniversary by 10 Downing Street, highlighting this important moment in our national consciousness. We also reunited Holocaust survivor Mala Tribich MBE with one of her liberators, Lord Saye & Sele, which was covered by BBC Breakfast and the Telegraph.

Yom HaShoah commemorations

To coincide with Yom HaShoah, the day in the Jewish calendar dedicated to Holocaust remembrance, we were proud to work in partnership with the late Rabbi Lord Sacks z”l to launch a series of videos offering Rabbi Lord Sacks’ unique perspective on some of the biggest questions posed by the Holocaust.

On Yom HaShoah Karen Pollock CBE, Chief Executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust facilitated a conversation with Rabbi Lord Sacks as part of an online programme of educational events run by Yom HaShoah UK. We ran two further sessions, an online conversation with Holocaust survivor Tomi Komoly BEM, and a session with two of our Ambassadors.

This year we expanded our reach on social media, with our posts being seen by millions of people and our accounts gaining thousands of new followers.

With people spending an increased amount of time online last year, we made sure to make the most of social media. We held Q&A sessions with Holocaust survivors and ran a campaign with our Ambassadors to commemorate the 75[th] anniversary of the liberation of Bergen-Belsen on Twitter, held our new Film Club on Facebook live, gave quick history lessons and shared survivor testimony on TikTok, and showed off Ambassador Projects on Instagram.

We even made sure to celebrate survivor birthdays online, encouraging our followers to #SendSomeLove to them – especially needed when they weren’t able to have visitors.

In 2021-22, in a challenging and rapidly changing context, we will continue to develop the means to achieve the Trust’s mission – to educate every person from every background in the UK about the Holocaust and its contemporary relevance – long into the future. We will work to fulfil our mission and charitable objectives in a fast-changing context, to protect the Trust’s financial security so that we can continue to deliver on our mission long into the future and provide leadership in the Holocaust education and remembrance sector.

In a changed operating environment, digital programmes will be central to all our work and their development will serve to cement the Holocaust Educational Trust’s position as the UK’s leading Holocaust education organisation.

Our focus on this activity reflects not just our immediate goals to keep delivering high-quality Holocaust education in the short term but also the need to develop Holocaust education practice so that it can be sustained for generations to come, even when our beloved

survivors are no longer able to share their testimony. Using the latest in breakthrough digital experiences, we will enhance our educational offering to schools - bringing interactive eye-witness testimony of Holocaust survivors, and the opportunity to explore sites of the Holocaust, to more young people than ever before.

We will continue to roll out our Lessons from Auschwitz Online Programme to young people from across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, ensuring that students from across the UK continue to learn about the Holocaust and visit such sites, whether in-person or virtually.
We will work to combat prejudice on campus and promote community cohesion through our Lessons from Auschwitz for Universities Project, the programme will bring together University student leaders through education on the Holocaust, antiracism work, British values and faith values.
We will redouble our efforts to ensure that our young Ambassador community are equipped with the tools to share their knowledge of the Holocaust within their communities and tackle antisemitism online and in society, we will transition to increased online engagement.
We will continue to deliver innovative training programmes, ensuring that teachers are equipped with the knowledge and skills they need to confidently teach the Holocaust.
We will strive to continue to reach new audiences through high-profile, innovative projects that bring wider awareness and understanding to people across the UK.
Wherever the Holocaust is denied, denigrated, or called into question, we will work to equip people with the skills and knowledge to defend the truth. When antisemitism rears its head, we will be at the forefront, standing up and speaking out against hatred. We will continue to champion the contemporary relevance of the Holocaust in today’s world.

IN MEMORIAM

Over the last year, the Trust has been saddened by the loss of a number of our incredible Holocaust survivors, our friends, and some of our staunchest supporters, including:

Rabbi Lord Sacks 08.03.1948 – 07.11.20

Rabbi Lord Sacks a titan of the Jewish community and an ambassador for this country and beyond. He was a firm friend and passionate supporter of Holocaust education and remembrance and often shared his time and wisdom with us at the Trust, including last year at Yom HaShoah when he shared his thoughts on G-d, faith and humanity during the Holocaust.

He was a leader of world Jewry, his supreme intellect, endless books and writings reaching far beyond our shores and his vision, leadership and wisdom changed our world for the better. He was a constant source of advice and encouragement to all of us at the Holocaust Educational Trust and will be remembered as the greatest religious thinker of our time.

Henry Wermuth 04.04.1923 – 18.05.2020

Henry Wermuth grew up in Frankfurt, Germany and survived multiple concentration and death camps during the Holocaust. His family was sent to the Bochnia Ghetto before Henry was deported to Krakow-Plaszow concentration camp. After this, Henry survived slave labour at Auschwitz-Monowitz before he was sent on a Death March. In May 1945 Henry was liberated at Mauthausen in Austria. In 1995, he was awarded the Johanna Kirchner Medal by the City of Frankfurt for his attempt to assassinate Hitler when he tried to derail a train near Klaj, Poland. After his experiences, Henry became a successful businessman, married, and had two children and three grandchildren. He spoke about his experiences throughout his life and his testimony was recorded in his book Breathe Deeply My Son.

Hedi Frankl 08.05.1921 – 16.10.2020

Hedi Frankl was born in a small town in Hungary in 1921. After the Nazi invasion in 1944, her mother procured false papers for Hedi, enabling her to live with a Christian family under a false identity. However, she was found a few weeks later and sent to work as a slave labourer in Vienna, Austria. Hedi later found out that the majority of her family had been murdered during the Holocaust. She was reunited with her only surviving relatives, her brother and uncle. After coming to the UK, Hedi worked as a social worker before becoming quite a famous matchmaker.

Ingrid Wuga BEM 24.06.1924 – 17.10.2020

At 15 years old Ingrid escaped occupied Germany on the Kindertransport a few weeks before the start of the Second World War. Her parents were able to join her shortly afterwards as their visas were granted by the British government and together they moved to Scotland. Later, she met fellow Kindertransport refugee Henry Wuga. They married and ran a catering business together for 30 years. They had two daughters and four grandsons together. Over the years Ingrid and her husband Henry developed strong relationships with many of our Scottish ambassadors, and were huge supporters of our work in Scotland, never missing an event. The couple dedicated a lot of their time to charitable causes including sharing their life story. Ingrid was awarded a BEM in 2019 for her services to Holocaust Education.

Lilian Black OBE February 1951 – 29.10.2020

Lilian Black OBE was a stalwart in the field of Holocaust education and remembrance. Chair of the Holocaust Survivors Friendship Association (HSFA) in Leeds and founder of the new Holocaust Exhibition and Learning centre in Huddersfield, Lilian was determined to honour the legacy of her father, Holocaust survivor Eugene Black. Through the HSFA Lilian enabled many Holocaust survivors in the north of England to share their stories and to find a family amongst one another. The new learning centre in Huddersfield opened in 2018 and Lilian hoped it would help the realisation of the declaration ‘never again.’ In 2020, a few weeks before her death, Lilian was awarded an OBE for services to Holocaust education.

Marc Schatzberger BEM 23.07.1926 – 24.01.2021

Marc was born in Vienna, Austria in 1926. The night of Kristallnacht in November 1938 was a turning point for Marc’s family and they decided it was too dangerous for Marc (then 12 ½ years old) to stay with his parents and they sent him to Britain on the Kindertransport. He grew up in a Jewish children’s hostel until his uncle and aunt arrived in the UK and were able to look after him. He later received news that his parents had been murdered at Auschwitz-Birkenau. In 1947 he gained an Honours Degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) and had a very successful career. He spoke about his experiences as a Jewish child refugee via the Trust’s Outreach Programme for many years.

Walter Kammerling BEM 27.10.1923 – 31.01.2021

Walter arrived in Britain on the Kindertransport at the age of 15 after witnessing the events of Kristallnacht in Vienna. One sister was able to join Walter in Britain as a domestic servant, however the rest of his family including his parents and other sister were murdered in Auschwitz-Birkenau. Walter first went to a children’s home in Dovercourt Essex before he was sent to Millisle in Northern Ireland, where he worked on a farm. He served in the British Army towards the end of the Second World War and whilst on leave he married Herta, a fellow Kindertransport refugee. Walter dedicated his later years to travelling the length and breadth of the UK, including in Northern Ireland, sharing his testimony with thousands of students and teachers through the Trust’s Outreach Program.

Herbert Haberberg 27.10.1924 – 06.03.2021

Herbert and his younger brother fled Germany on the Kindertransport in 1939. In 1944, determined to fight the Nazis, Herbert volunteered for the British Army and was stationed first in Italy and then Brussels. Two years later, he was stationed near Bergen-Belsen (which in 1946 was a Displaced Persons camp). He volunteered his free time as a Yiddish interpreter and worked with the thousands of survivors who were attempting to rebuild their lives.

Fundraising

We are a paid member of the Fundraising Regulator and work in compliance with their fundraising standards.

Fundraising is undertaken by a small in-house team. We do not outsource this function, and staff are fully trained and have regular updates regarding data security and GDPR legislation. We occasionally use the wider staff team to assist with fundraising during busy periods, for whom we provide support, training and guidance.

We have a Fundraising Committee, led by our Chair and consisting of senior volunteers who are also major donors to the charity.

We have a gift acceptance policy for all donations over £50,000 which requires that we research and perform due diligence in terms of compliance and the impact on our strategy, operations, and mission.

We contact our existing donors by email, telephone, and letter, in accordance with their stated preferences.

We recruit new donors through personal referral, and we did a social media led crowdfunding campaign for the first time this year.

We value our relationship with donors and take care to ensure that communication is maintained at a low volume, and all records are held securely.

Our database is GDPR compliant; during the year we transferred our Fundraising Database to Blackbaud’s Raiser’s Edge. We have received no complaints in relation to our fundraising activities in the current year (2019-20 Nil)

Sadly we were not able to host our Annual Fundraising Dinner in 2020, however our supporters responded positively to the appeal that we ran in its place, donating in excess of £700k.

We extend our thanks to all of our donors and supporters throughout the year.

Financial Review

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the accounting policies set out in note 1 to the financial statements and comply with the Charity's Memorandum and Articles of Association, the Companies Act 2006, the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005, the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended) and “Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their financial statements in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).

For the year 2020-21, our activity was considerably reduced; in part this was a result of the successful completion of the Belsen Project in 2020; no income or expenditure in 2020-21 (2019-20 income £1,643k, expenditure £1,650k). Aside from this, our activity on Lessons from Auschwitz was curtailed as a result of the pandemic; Income £1,463k, expenditure £1,614k (2019-20: Income £2,545k, Expenditure £2,579k). We took the opportunity of the break in visits to Auschwitz to create an exciting suite of on-line learning tools which we will be able to use in conjunction with visits when our full programme resumes.

At 31 March 2021, our total fund balance was £4,697k (2020: £4,464k). £1,545k (2020: £1,635k) of this total are restricted funds and not available for the general purposes. A further £650k (2020: £650k) is held as designated funds which have been set aside out of unrestricted funds by the Trustees for specific purposes, as set out on pages 37-38, leaving free reserves of £2,466k after adjusting for the net value of fixed assets and designated funds.

Going Concern

The Trustees have considered the effect of the Covid-19 outbreak. The Trustees consider that the outbreak continues to cause some disruption to the Charity’s operations. The Trust has adapted to this disruption and the Trustees do not believe that the pandemic will prevent the Trust from fulfilling its charitable objectives or raising the funds it needs to do so.

The Trustees have prepared forecasts which present a positive outlook for the Charity. Post year-end, the Charity has maintained a healthy cash balance and has successfully raised over £1 million through a crowdfunding campaign.

At the time of approving the financial statements, the Trustees have a reasonable expectation that the Charity has adequate resources to continue in operational existence for the foreseeable future. Thus the Trustees continue to adopt the going concern basis of accounting in preparing the financial statements.

Trustees are nominated and elected at meetings of the Trustees and Board of Management. We have instigated an open process for recruiting new members. Newly elected Trustees are given information on the background of the Trust along with a description of their responsibilities as a Trustee. Term limits of 3+3 years, renewable once (totaling 12 years), are in place. Trustees can serve for subsequent terms, but with a one-year gap after each 12. The term of the Chair of the Trust is 4 years, renewable for a maximum of 2 terms or 8 years (the term can be extended further by a 75% majority vote of Trustees). The Board regularly reviews its composition to ensure it has the skills, knowledge and experience it needs to govern, lead and deliver the Trust’s purposes effectively. Appointments are made, on merit, against objective criteria and consider the benefits of diversity on the board.

The Trustees and Board of Management meet every 10-12 weeks. They oversee the work of the Trust, consider future projects, and are involved in strategic decision-making for the organisation. Day-to-day decisions are taken by the Chief Executive. Any important or urgent matters are raised with the Chairman and President and/or the Operations and Governance subcommittee which is comprised of the Chairman, Treasurer, and senior Trustee Michael Karp.

The Council is made up of individuals who we can call upon if needed to consider matters and provide advice to the Trustees/Chief Executive. Council Members are appointed at the discretion of Trustees, they can attend meetings and request information but do not have a vote.

In addition to a staff team of approximately 35, the Trust also makes use of the services of around 100 freelance educators. The remuneration for key management personnel remuneration is set by the Chairman of the Trust, in consultation with the Treasurer following the annual performance management procedures.

Pay and remuneration of the Senior Management Team is decided using the industry norm as a guide.

Reserves Policy

In line with the recommendations of the Charity Commission, the Trustees have a regularly reviewed Reserves policy. This recognises that the income of the Trust varies year on year and so to enable the Trust to plan its activities, it is prudent to hold reserves. The policy also recognises that the reserves that represent the fixed assets and the restricted funds of the Trust are not freely available and thus are to be distinguished from free reserves. In the annual review of the Reserves Policy the Board decided that in this economic climate it would be prudent to ensure that we have 12 months of expenditure in our reserves. These reserves are held to ensure that the Trust can continue to engage in its charitable work even if adverse economic conditions restrict fundraising activities.

Based on year-to-date information as at 31 September 2021 and projections made in September 2021, it would be expected that during the twelve months to the end of September 2022, expenses would amount to approximately £2,638k.

The free reserves, less those amounts relating to fixed assets, amount to £3,116k (2020: £2,786k), of which £650k (2020: £650k) is designated. This is slightly below the Charity’s policy requirements, but within an acceptable margin.

The principal risks identified by Trustees include:

Capacity

The Trust is mindful of the potential risk of reduced capacity to deliver and develop its programmes while operating in a way which is supportive to staff who may be facing challenging circumstances due to the pandemic. As staff try to pivot all programmes in response to coronavirus, workload has increased. Board and Members of SMT are aware of staff workload. Members of staff are required to give sufficient notice before leaving the organisation allowing time for the recruitment of new members of staff. New investment in staffing is underway, particularly in digital development, finance, and administration. Support packages including health insurance, employee assistance scheme, income protection, sick pay are in place for staff.

Decline in accessibility to first hand survivor testimony

As the Holocaust moves from living memory, survivor testimony and insight into educational programmes is lost. The Team is working closely with survivors, educationalists and partners to ensure that survivors' stories are told well into the future. We are exploring the use of technology to record testimonies, as well as working with survivors' families. Funding for this work has been secured and Trustees have approved plans for next steps. Testimony is being collected during coronavirus lockdown.

Voluntary Income reduces as a result of coronavirus

We have reduced our spend as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Our 2021 Appeal Dinner did not go ahead. We have implemented a new fundraising strategy that includes wealth screening, a new database, relationship development/'friendraising' and crowdfunding.

The Government ceases funding of the Lessons from Auschwitz Project

A potential result from spending cuts following the pandemic. DfE are supportive of new LFA online platform but the grant agreement still needs to be finalised. More work on monitoring and evaluation of the LFA project is to take place in the 21-22 financial year.

The Trust has control procedures set in place for the current round of funding which runs until March 2022. We have a detailed Exit Plan for the Lessons from Auschwitz Project were funding to cease mid cycle which would enable us to deliver courses which had been promoted and which participants had signed up for. The Trust is also developing plans to ensure the sustainability of Lessons from Auschwitz by creating a new, digital, interactive platform for the Project.

Covid-19 outbreak in the office/fear of Covid-19 amongst staff

As we consider returning to the office, the possibility that we could have an outbreak of Covid-19 in the office cannot be discounted. We are working through government guidance on making the office Covid-secure, including changing high touch points such as our door entry system and placing hand washing facilities around the office. Nevertheless, concern about staff catching Covid-19 either in the office or on the commute cannot be fully mitigated until London/the UK is declared Covid-free and we will have to work hard to make the office as safe as possible and to protect vulnerable staff and maximise their flexibility.

We have commenced a capital works programme to improve layout and ventilation in the office.

Safety and wellbeing of participants, staff, volunteers or survivors is put at risk

This could be either in in person programmes or online; We have clear and robust safeguarding policies in place, and all staff are DBS checked and trained appropriately in accordance with best practice. There is a designated safeguarding lead within the staff and trustees. Safer recruitment guidelines are being considered. A code of behaviour exists for all staff and trustees. All staff are trained, with an external agency engaged to advise the safeguarding lead and deputy, and lead Trustee for safeguarding.

Guidelines on online safeguarding is circulated to staff. Work is currently being undertaken to update social media policy in relation to staff engagement with beneficiaries on social media. Safeguarding guidance has been updated and shared with staff and volunteers. New risk assessments were undertaken for the online outreach programme in January 2021 and digital safeguarding guidance launched at the same time.

IT and physical security

Data security is a concern for all organisations and given the nature of our work physical security cannot be discounted as a risk. Steps have been taken to ensure internal and external data systems are regularly backed up, that data on internal systems is secured and email systems are protected. An external data protection agency has been engaged. The Trust takes regular advice from the Community Security Trust on security matters.

The major risks to which the Trust is exposed are regularly reviewed and systems established to mitigate against those risks (where appropriate, professional advisors have been appointed to mitigate those risks).

Statement of disclosure to auditor

Each of the trustees has confirmed that there is no information of which they are aware which is relevant to the audit, but of which the auditor is unaware. They have further confirmed that they have taken appropriate steps to identify such relevant information and to establish that the auditors are aware of such information.
