Activities, Achievements and Performance

In planning our giving and activities for the year we kept in mind the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit at our trustee meetings and believe this is followed.

King George VIth Centre (KGVI) in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, continued to be the specified beneficiary of donations received during the year, so these are held in the Charity’s restricted funds. Total income amounted to £ 53,908 (2022 - £ 63,156), coming from a variety of sources; individuals, church groups and grant-making trusts for special projects. Most came from generous individuals who support King George Vith Centre through the Charity. Some of these are small monthly sums indicating a continuing desire to support the children who are the ultimate beneficiaries. We are very grateful for the generosity of these individuals and all gifts, large and small, are appreciated and necessary to help KGVI’s work continue. Further detail of major donations is given in Note 1 to the accounts on page 6.

Payments to or on behalf of KGVI exceeded income by £ 28,428 in the year due to the drawn’ down of reserves held at the end on 2022, specifically grants received in December 2022. Funds are held by the charity until requested by KGVI as there is greater security in Britain than in Zimbabwe.

Grants to KGVI in response to requests for funds amounted to £ 81,777 (2022 £ 39,236), and reserves held at the year-end amounted to £ 31,020 (2022 £ 59,448), to be carried forward for use in future years. The normal operations of the Centre have resumed fully post the Covid-19 pandemic but there have been challenges during the year because of hyper-inflation in Zimbabwe leading to greatly increased costs and more parents lacking resources to pay the full fees.

The trustees appreciate the interest of all those who continue to support the charity, including those sponsors who give regularly through the year, and wish once again to record their gratitude and thanks to all supporters. The work done by KGVI continues to be of great importance to the children who benefit from it and could not continue without support from outside Zimbabwe. The impact of each economic crisis in Zimbabwe is felt disproportionately by those who attend schools like KGVI, and local funding becomes harder to arrange. Staff at KGVI continue to work immensely hard to keep providing for the pupils and are being innovative in working towards | growing locally generated income by sponsored events and selling produce from the centre gardens. However, they continue to rely on donations from Amandla Trust and many other supporters internationally to allow the centre to continue to function. Amandla Trust could not provide this support without the generous donations it receives.

The trustees and other supporters give their time voluntarily, so all funds raised are used for the benefit of the children at KGVI.

Reserves Policy

The trustees do not consider that it is necessary to hold reserves at a specific level as the charity has no employees, property or commitments other than to provide support as funds allow. Resources are disbursed only after they have been received in cleared funds and are not committed before receipt. Reserves at 31°' December 2023 amounted to £ 31,020 (2022 £ 59,448).

Risk Assessment

'

As part of their risk assessment process the trustees have obtained a copy of the King George Vith Centre’s Child Protection Policy, which is very similar to that which would be required of such an organisation in England, and have received confirmation from the Administrator that the policy is adhered to. There have been visits by trustees (at their own expense) to the centre in recent years and these, together with personal knowledge of the senior management and access to KGVI’s audited accounts each year, give confidence that donated funds are being used for the purposes for which they are intended. The Chairman, Dr Mike Rodd, remains a trustee of King George Vith Centre thereby strengthening the Charity’s links with KGVI.

The risk of the Charity having insufficient resources to meet its commitments is managed by ensuring that no funds are committed until donations have been received.
