DRAFT - Chair, Secretary and Treasurer’s Annual Report 2022

In line with Charity Commission requirements, our Trustees have ensured that our activities have the widest possible public benefit, whether in Christian or Youth Work operations. Assets and resources have been used to further the Objects of the Constitution and specified Mission Statements adopted by Trustees in past years. Funds are ethically sourced, and control of finances maintained. Open access for all our events and activities is applied in line with our Equal Opportunities policy and underlying Christian principles. Legal rules have been observed and relevant policies adopted or updated, each specifically approved by Trustees.

Linda Cunningham continued as Chair to late spring of 2022. Our new Chair, Councillor Darren Byford, ex co-opted member, became an elected Trustee. Lesley Harrison was appointed Trustee & Treasurer on 23 November 2022 at the Trustee Meeting. Reverend John Geary retired, and Reverend Hannah Hobday was elected a Trustee. Thanks go to Linda, and our longer serving Officers, Keith Taylor, part year Treasurer, Heather Turner, secretary and Safeguarding Trustee, John Gallagher, a key Fundraising Trustee and, of course, our Trustees and Youth Trustee Advisors. Thanks too to our co-opted Trustee Advisor Joanne Davis, an experienced Youth Work Practitioner.

The 2022 United Service was supported by all our churches. The 2021 United Service took place at St Marys by Envoy Les Clarke in January. A very different but inclusive service welcomed by the small congregation.

We also ran a Zoom Quiz led by Mark Hunter which reached and linked over 60 people in our area. The March 2022 Forum, held at Horbury Methodist Church, had over 80 attendees. Thanks to guest speaker, Pastor Graham Brownlee, an experienced minister talking about “Community, Message and Engagement”.

On Good Friday, 15[th] April, we attended a thought provoking “Tenebrae” service at St Andrews Church, led by Christine Hewitt. We distributed Easter eggs and HCT Leaflets in the Co-op on Easter Saturday to reach out to our community. We strongly believe being involved with our community is part of our work.

Christian Aid Week went very well raising £2084, up over £500 on 2021. Thanks to all the Churches for contributing and particularly to Carole Shaw, our Christian Aid Group Chair for all her hard work organising and supporting our Churches with various Christian Aid activities.

In May our free Whit Community Party, at Horbury Academy, for at families unable to afford commercially run summer events, attracted over 500 people, up at least 200 people on any previous year. The atmosphere was very much of community, and on a surprisingly kind and warm day, the bumper event included a Whit Cake, Bar B Q, refreshments, Bouncy Castles, Archery, Field Games, Kite Making and Flying, Hook-aDuck, Crafts, Music and 3 Face Painters! It needed a big effort from a large number of volunteers, our 8 churches and our sponsors, but the joy on adult and children's faces all afternoon made it very worthwhile. Autumn Harvest singing took place in September at the Co-op, well received by shoppers and customers. In September, we held our annual and popular community Quiz Night at St Johns Church, led by our quizmaster, Andrew Shaw. The evening brings people together in a fun and challenging way.

Christmas carol singing took place in the Co-op, where we reach out to the community and hand out service times and chocolates for the children. This is always a joyous occasion at the end of our calendar of events

Our grateful thanks go to Heather Turner for compiling and editing the monthly newsletter. We have continued our widened leaflet distribution so as to engage those in residential homes and community groups. These are well received often by the very lonely in our community, pleased not to have been forgotten. We continued our poster communications directly and via local retailers notice boards, aimed at everyone, but particularly those without access to the internet.

2022 has been a good year for turning a corner at Horbury breakthrough Youth Project This was evident in seeing significant grant applications being successful. As well as staff changes - it is always sad to say goodbye to youth workers who we have seen develop over recent years. But we now have a new batch of staff bursting with potential who can aid us in taking the project forward. We have been slowly building up numbers of young people attending the weekly sessions, many of whom come via the best kind of endorsers - the young people themselves. We have some way to go, but we have been exploring with the young people

quality impactful activities that are more important than the quantity of sessions. That said, we were delivering seventeen weekly sessions and an additional seven weekly one-to-one mentoring sessions. In the 2021/22 Academic year, which we use for statistical recording, we worked with 377 young people (228 boys, 135 girls and 14 non-binary) of whom 60% were disadvantaged

There were several project highlights in 2022, first was the trip to Harry Potter Studio Tour in April with our Book Club. Secondly, a great night of Ceilidh music, dancing and food, organised by our very own Legacy group, in aid of Motor Neuron Disease. Thirdly, the Happy Healthy Holidays programme we ran over the summer for young people on free school meals, giving them the opportunity to access meals and a range of activities that they might otherwise not have been able to afford to do. It was the project’s busiest summer ever with daily drop-ins, trips to various activities such as go-karting, air-soft, and an outdoor activity residential, to name a few. But the highlight was the privilege to be able to take two coach loads of families to Bridlington and Chester Zoo, the weather was perfect, everyone had a great time and no one got lost! The Youth Awards Lunch was so well attended in 2022, with a fantastic atmosphere and blend of project supporters Horbury Churches Together, parents and young people there to receive their awards.

Income fluctuated through 2022 but, despite that, reserves increased by £6492 to £54,870 on 31[st] December 2022 (2021: £48,378). Total Receipts were £124,708 (2021: £93,381) and included National Lottery Community Fund (NLCF) grant income of £40,500 (2021: £47,354), 32% of total receipts. Other Donations and Grants were £60,612 (2021: £26,778), 49% of total receipts and included Aire Calder Methodist Circuit £4,000, Family and Social Welfare Fund £5,000, Horbury Common Lands Trust £4,500, Garfield Weston £15,000, Foyle Foundation £5,000, Cooperative Local Charity Scheme £4831, WMDC £21,702 (including major Government funded schemes Happy Healthy Holidays and UKCRF) and other payments £579. This report was prepared by Lesley Harrison.

Special thanks to John Gallagher, John Walter and Gary Bentley for preparing and submitting the various grant application forms, and to all external organisations supporting us in 2022. Regular Donations from loyal individuals and our Churches generated £8,848 (2021: £7,144), 7% of total receipts. A huge thank you to the individuals and our local Churches, who have continued to support ‘Horbury Churches Together’ throughout 2022.

Numerous Fund-raising activities and Events, including the Great North Run, Family Fun Day and Store collections, generated £5,730 (2021: £7,173), 5% of total receipts. Activity contributions by young people including our Holiday Activities and Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme generated £3,630 (2021: 2,997), 3% of total receipts. Gift Aid and Other Income generated £5,387 (2021: £1,935), 4% of total receipts. Total Payments £118,216 (2021: £102,699) consisted of Salaries, Pensions & NI of £82,041 (2021: £70,096) 69% of the total, Youth Activity costs of £22,316 (2021: £17,110), 19% of the total, Rent, Utilities & Office costs £11,985 (2021: £12,601), 10% of payments, other costs of £1,874 (2021: £2,891) 2% of payments.

Horbury Churches Together and The Horbury Breakthrough Youth Project benefit from Trustees and individuals giving time freely and our own 8 Churches who provide free or reduced rent for meetings and youth activities at Church premises. Great thanks also to Trustees, Ministers, Officers, Business Committee members, Gary Bentley and his Project Youth Work Staff, Volunteers, Parents and, very importantly, Church members supporting all we do.
