Chair’s report

It’s difficult to know where to start with this year’s report. For a relatively small charity we have certainly raised our profile in the community! With the recruitment of volunteers and potential trustees, support from local businesses, individuals and organisations, and new initiatives and fundraising, we have been extremely busy.

Kerrin’s advice, outreach and volunteering report describes this in more detail. I am so proud of the teamwork we have in place as it provides the framework for our future development.

The community pantry has been a big success as has the Winter warmers initiative, all down to our amazing volunteers.

I am immensely grateful to all of you for the support you have given me this year during my health issues which have meant I have not been as active as I would have liked. You have all been wonderful.

Ellie

Advice, Outreach and Volunteering

Demand for our services has increased every year. Over the past 12 months, possibly as a response to the current financial climate.

Volunteers

Increased demand for our services has contributed to us increasing our volunteer intake. We now have an extra volunteer to assist the advice team (Jules) and a volunteer in charge of the pantry (Sarah), along with the volunteers providing our usual services.

Outreach

Our two Outreach volunteers (Jaki and Bryan) are making far more runs to collect donations from various locations.

We have also increased our Outreach services to include classes from Inspire learning and a community allotment (many thanks to Andrew L for this)

Once a week, on Wednesdays, we have free hot food for any member of the community in need (thanks again to Andrew).

Advice

We now have a three person advice team to deal with the increased demand: Kerrin (team leader): forms, debts, letters, benefit and grant claims Dylan (advice worker): online claims, accessing online forms, debt Jules (volunteer): accessing online information and claims.

Financial Report

As you can see, we have managed to remain solvent again this year! The attached income and expenditure statement is what is required for the Charity Commission and does not tell you the whole story.

We are currently searching for grants so we can develop our work in line with current demand. The community has been consulted and lots of ideas have been put forward but new funding is essential.

However, thanks to Kerrin, we have been able to successfully apply for appropriate sources of grant aid etc so that we can now expand our services. For example we are able to pay for sessional workers for the advice team and purchase equipment through £8820 Lottery Community Fund.

Some of the grants were obtained were actually for Durban House Volunteers hub. We acted as an umbrella organisation while they were awaiting Charity status and could open their own bank account - we plan to be involved when it opens so will still benefit. These have now been transferred eg NCC Social Recovery Fund £5755 for projects such as Men in Sheds.

We continue to be supported financially by Broxtowe Borough Council (£2,500 for rent and insurance), local businesses and people.

A big thank you to Georgina and Harvey at Pells Accountants who have prepared the statement free of charge and who will help us with some training in the future. Thanks also to Dylan who was indispensable during the preparation of the books.
